Comprising of Stalky and Co. as well as Debits and Credits the works here show the breadth of Kipling's abilities with the former book a novel and the latter a collection of short stories poems and scenes for a play. Both volumes are decorated with Kipling's signature elephant to the boards a nod to his time in and love for India something also related to in the Hindu symbols found to the endpages. Stalky and Co. features the bookplate of one G. W. Bell. Condition: In decorative cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally quite smart there is some wear to the boards extremities and joints as well as some sunning to spines. The hinge of Stalky and Co. is tender. Internally the pages are generally firmly bound although there is some light strain in places and are bright and clean throughout aside from the odd instance of spotting throughout. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 30 December 1865 18 January 1936 was an English short-story writer poet and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay in the Bombay Presidency of British India and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Condition: In a red cloth binding with gilt title detailing to the spine. Externally generally smart but lightly rubbed in places with fading to the spine a little bumping to the extremities and a few handling marks. The hinges are slightly strained. Internally the binding is tender in places; the pages are bright with scattered spotting and light foxing to the endpapers. There is an ink stamp of S. Y. Illustrated with 15 full-page colour plates by F. H. Townsend. An excellent very good or better copy the cloth very lightly spotted the contents without inscriptions or stamps but with foxing to the margins. Complete with the original rubbed nicked and darkened dustwrapper. Although unstated as such this is the second separate edition. Printed on wove paper it bulks much thicker than the first printing and has the corrected "Bemrose and Sons Ltd" imprint to page 80. The dustwrapper design also differs to that of the first printing. Kipling undertook the history of the regiment in WWI following the death in action of his son John at the Battle of Loos whilst serving with the Second Battalion; a personal tragedy from which the author never fully recovered. After five and a half years of research 'done with agony and bloody sweat' the work was immediately recognised as both a military and a literary masterpiece. This much needed re-issue of the original edition of 1923 is augmented with a considerable number of previously unpublished photographs of places and events together with a thoughtful foreword by the editor of the 'Kipling Journal'.
