Puck of Pook's Hill is a historical fantasy book by Rudyard Kipling published in 1906 containing a series of short stories set in different periods of English history. The stories are all narrated to two children living near Burwash in the area of Kipling's own house Bateman's by people magically plucked out of history by the elf Puck or told by Puck himself. Puck who refers to himself as the oldest Old Thing in England is better known as a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream. The genres of particular stories range from authentic historical novella A Centurion of the Thirtieth On the Great Wall to children's fantasy Dymchurch Flit. Each story is bracketed by a poem which relates in some manner to the theme or subject of the story. Condition: In a half-calf binding. Externally smart though with some sunning to the spine and some light rubbing. Internallyfirmly bound. Ink signature to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are mainly bright and clean. Departmental Ditties comprises verses about official life in India reprinted from the CMG. This which Kipling always regarded as his first book had a great success among the community it satirised - ODNB. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is only very mild wear to the extremities with just very mild bumping and rubbing and some slight discolouration and marks to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean with very occasional scattered spots and very mild browning to the page edges. With light scattered spots and slight offsetting to the endpapers. It is by far the darkest of all Kipling's collections. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is very slight wear to the extremities including very slight bumping and fading to the top of the spine. The dust wrapper hasaseveral small closed tears with a chip which leads into a closed tear measuring approx 35mm. There is some sunning to the spine.
