London: Leonard Smithers and Co. 1899. I really think it reads the best of my plays First edition trade issue one of 1000 copies. Wilde's political comedy premiered at the Haymarket on 3 January 1895 and ran until 6 April. His arrest the day before the production closed precipitated his "utter social destruction" ODNB and the play was not published in book form until two years after his release from prison. The edition also included 100 signed copies on large paper and 12 on Japanese vellum reserved for presentation. Quarto. Original pink cloth spine lettered in gilt stylized leaf motifs by Charles Shannon in gilt to spine and covers edges untrimmed. Bookplate of one W. A. S. Ray. Spine sunned and a little soiled closed tears to upper margins of half-title and title page neatly repaired. A very good copy. Mason 385. James G. An excellent wide-margined example in a stylish contemporary binding. <br /> <br /> A story of blackmail corruption public honor and private pride An Ideal Husband debuted on the stage in January of 1895. Though not as well-received critically as Wilde's first two "drawing-room plays" Lady Windermere's Fan 1892 and A Woman of No Importance 1893 An Ideal Husband was popular with audiences during its original run at the Haymarket theater. Its initial success was only surpassed by The Importance of Being Earnest which debuted to great popularity and critical acclaim in February. The productions of both plays were cut short however when Wilde was arrested in April and imprisoned in May. The publication of An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest was delayed four years; the books were finally published in 1899 just a year before Wilde's death. Despite the turmoil of its initial production An Ideal Husband saw several revivals throughout the twentieth century and was adapted for the screen in 1999. Near Fine. Leonard Smithers & Co unknown
