WILDE, Oscar.
The Ballad of Reading Gaol. By C.3.3.
London: Leonard Smithers 1898. It was worth while sending Mr. Oscar Wilde to gaol. First edition one of 800 unnumbered copies printed on handmade paper; a further 30 copies on japon were published simultaneously. This copy contains contemporary newspaper reviews and obituary notices for Wilde tipped to the outer leaves. The clippings showcase some public support for the embattled Wilde with The Daily Chronicle heralding the poet as "not difficult to detect though the poet's style is simpler more straightforward and in this case more grim than it used to be" and Review of Reviews stating "it was worth while sending Mr. Oscar Wilde to gaol if only in order that the world might be enriched by this marvellously powerful and pathetic" poem. Octavo. Original white quarter cloth spine lettered in gilt light brown cloth sides edges untrimmed. Housed in a custom yellow cloth chemise and quarter calf with yellow cloth slipcase. Early ownership inscription on half-title sometime washed. Spine browned cloth cockled and a little soiled ends and corners bumped partial splits to inner hinges a little light foxing. A good copy.
