The inky black cloth binding has astriking blind impressed design by the artist. A lovely set of drawings all the more remarkable for being completed by hand with touches of gold and then burnished. The whole is contained within a glossy slipcase and this one is still sturdy if a tiny bit scuffed. The copy of Heritage Press's 'Sandglass' explains fully how this superior production was made and it is included inside the slipcase. Softcover issued without DJ in presentation box. Blue card presentation box with illustrated title label in very good condition with some rubbing to edges and fading to paper title label. The book itself still wrapped in original tissue paper and bound in soft illustrated card covers in good condition with some chipping to spine and edges. Inside all pages and plates in very good clean condition with the very odd fingermark. This is a beautiful if inexpensively produced pirate copy of the first English edition of Oscar Wilde's short tragic play Salome. The play was originally published in French in 1893 and released in English translation a year later in hardback accompanied by a selection of illustrations by the enormously influential Art Nouveau artist and illustrator Aubrey Beardsley and published by Elkin Mathews & John Lane. Marbled endpapers. original covers and spine retained and bound in. 19.5 x14cm vi 89pp. French text. Illustrated with 9 fine colour illustrations by Alastair this is an attractive copy of Oscare Wilde's Salome his play about the attempted seduction of Jokanaan John the Baptist by Salome step-daughter of Herod Antipas; her dance of the seven veils; the execution of Jokanaan at Salome's instigation; and her death on Herod's orders. This copy includes a bibliography of the play. The play was first published in 1891 but due to it showing Biblical characters it was banned from the British stage until 1931. However it remained hugely popular on the continent. Condition: Good plus condition. The front joint is starting to show a little wear but is still firmly attached and with light rubbing to the edges. The contents are in strong readable condition and all plates are present but there is a small stain to the bottom of the pages not affecting text or images.
