Disbound light wear and several short closed tears at outer margins Very Good. <br /> <br /> A Civil War illustration of wishful thinking: "Your correspondent has this moment - half-past five o'clock P.M. - received a special despatch from a reliable source dated Louisville Kentucky Sept. 5 couched in the following language which confirms the announcement of the death of Jeff. Davis first made in this correspondence on Tuesday last:- 'Positive advices received here this morning on Davis' death.' A special messenger from Fortress Monroe who arrived here to-day announces that flags have been flying at half-mast along the rebel lines for several days and information was received at the fortress that it was in consequence of the death of Jeff Davis."<br /> A source from Richmond stated that Davis had a serious illness and "little hope was entertained of his recovery." This is then followed by a biographical sketch of the provisional Vice President Alexander H. Stephens under the heading "THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY." mostly on board the barque Sarah of London 1831. Contemporary sheepskin parchment sewn on 2 tapes. 4to 19.5 x 16.5 cm. The journal with an engraved view as frontispiece "Island of Saint Helena" engraved by Everingham in London 15 full-page 1 nearly full-page and 1 smaller manuscript maps and coastal profiles plus a small engraved view "Tomb of Napoleon" mounted on 1 page. The lecture notes with a matching pair of engravings of a scull one signed "A. East del" on and facing the title-page and 27 pencil and/or ink anatomical drawings including 2 full-page some also with red. Most are drawn on the album leaves a few on separate slips mounted on the leaves. Both the lecture notes and the journal are written in brown ink with occasional additions in pencil. Including: MANUSCRIPT - ANATOMICAL. MORSE Edward George.Lecture Book notes on anatomical lectures by Joseph Constantine Carpue.London November-December 1828. A manuscript ship's journal kept by Edward George Morse Bromyard 1805-Deal post 1850 who no doubt served among other functions as the ship's surgeon. Morse made his earliest dated entries in April 1831 at the island Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and others at Madagascar and its surrounding islands from May to August 1831. Morse provides extensive notes on the natural history topography and people of the Seychelles Madagascar and the neighbouring islands and provides detailed maps of many of the islands and coastal areas along with a few coastal profiles. The two manuscripts are written in a single album of laid paper. Morse used it 1828 to take notes when he attended the London lectures on anatomy and blood circulation by the innovative surgeon Joseph Constantine Carpue who had pioneered facial reconstructive surgery by introducing ancient Indian techniques. He was famous for illustrating his lectures with chalk drawings which no doubt served as the models for the anatomical illustrations in Morse's notes. A few clippings and hand-written notes have been inserted. unknown

A very good copy with some cosmetic wear. <br /> <br /> A fiercely anti-union piece collected from various contemporary WSJ articles but without actually admitting to a publisher deploring Union activities wholesale and attempting to equate labor organization with terrorism. There are frequent references to "dynamiting" denunciation of Gompers Mooney Michael Boyle and a number of other prominent labor activists of the time and the general suggestion that if everyone would just settle down and get used to being paid in peanuts for hazardous work so that those who subscribed to the WSJ could simply exploit people as much as they wanted.then everything would be greatly improved. 1913. Ireland: June 16-18 1913. <br /> <br /> Small lined notebook 11x17.5 cm 56 pp. orange card covers titled by hand spine reinforced with tape. Approx. 28 pages filled with neat ink manuscript entries illustrated with four small original sepia photos and a hand-drawn folded map tipped to inside of front cover. Covers a little worn contents age-toned but entirely legible.<br /> <br /> § A delightfully detailed record of an amusingly rushed school trip to Ireland made by an English schoolboy in 1913. The boys and several masters departed from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire it seems likely they attended Wycliffe College prep school and travelled by train to Fishguard in Wales and from there by boat to Rosslare Harbour in Country Wexford Ireland. Then by train char-a-banc a governess cart ponies and finally boats they tore across the south of Ireland to Killarney and back in a single day. The dutiful author of the journal prepares for the trip with several lists: "General time-table" "List of required articles" including "change of socks.cup soup-plate. rug if room" "Things to be noticed" Waterford Harbour Mountains Lakes Cattle Grazing. and a very thorough plan for "Meals" cornflakes chocolate bananas squashed fly biscuits. The journal itself is neatly written and full of detail particularly of the various vehicles Irish trains get a thorough review and his glimpses of "real Ireland". Four small mounted photos show a bridge in Kerry viewed from a boat Ross Castle "A Jaunting Bar" a kind of horse-drawn carriage and happily "the Author" who appears to be in his early teens. The star of the journal is a large folding map of the trip carefully hand-drawn and keyed and mounted inside the front cover. unknown

Roger Cardinal was one of Britains most distinguished art historians best known for defining what is generally known as Outsider Art - that is art by people with no formal training. He began his career as a lecturer at the French department of the University of Manitoba Canada subsequently moving to Warwick University and finally to the University of Kent at Canterbury where he taught for fifty years and held a professorship. Roger Cardinal was not only a leading authority on Outsider Art but also on Surrealism. He was a prolific writer and a master of literary style. His eloquent percipient writings include several books on a wide range of subjects such as Outsider Art 1972 German Romantics in Context 1975 Figures of Reality 1981 Expressionism 1984 The Landscape Vision of Paul Nash 1989 The Cultures of Collecting 1994 and Kurt Schwitters 2011. He also acted as a curator and was a regular contributor to art-historical publications. CardinalÕs interest in art lay in its margins - the neurodiverse psychotic uneducated autistic self-taught and ÔotherÕ. His fascination with artists such as the violently psychotic Adolf Wlfli lay in their creativity rather than in the sensationalism of their lives. Certainly it did not lie in the resale value of their work. That outsider art should have its own multimillion-dollar annual fair in New York and specialist departments at ChristieÕs auctioneers ran quite contrary to CardinalÕs thinking. Ligeia 2004 unknown
