WHITE William Allen 1868 1944; American newspaper editor and politician
Thanking a friend for kind words following the accidental death of his daughter Mary enclosing a copy of his “famous eulogy†Wikipedia “Mary White†published in his Kansas newspaper Emporia Gazette in an eloquent typed letter on Gazette letterhead signed by White June 10 1921 to Barbara Jarrell in New York
12mo. 4-pages approximately 325 words in part: “My article on Mary has been more widely copied than any other article that ever appeared in the Gazette … I have had literally hundreds of letters from men and women who have been touched by it. Surely it has brought her life into the lives of others and I hope for good … an influence to soften their lives and to inspire them with some impulse which will work out for the common good for some little addition through each heart to our larger social inheritance.†The letter and clipping are accompanied by five other letters or notes to Jarrell of her brother Frank all signed by White and a full-length photograph of him inscribed “For Barbara Jarrell / from her friend / W. A. White / Emporia / Feb. 24 1926.†White owner and editor of The Emporia Gazette 1895-1944 supported progressive causes and harshly criticized the rise of the Klan during the 1920s but supported Republican candidates for President in the 1930s becoming “spokesman for middle America†Wikipedia.
