Fog's Journal News Sheet
REMARKS ON FOG'S JOURNAL, OF FEBRUARY 10. 1732/3 [I.E. 1733]. Exciting the People to Assassination.
11 leaves (of 12? - No half title, if one was ever present). 21 cm. Modestly soiled. Leather backed cloth boards. Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature: No. 7170. In Fog's Journal, an early news sheet, there was a call (by way of historical allegory) for the assassination of Robert Walpole and others. Walpole, the Earl of Oxford (1676-1745), was really Britain's first Prime Minister. He governed through a time of relative peace and prosperity, but not without controversies. In 1733 Walpole's influence received a profound blow. Serious frauds relating to excise duties were uncovered. He proposed to check smuggling and avoid fraud by levying the full tax on wine and tobacco, not at their point of sale, but upon their first removal from the various warehouses. "His opponents fastened on these proposals with irresistible force, and so serious an agitation stirred the country that the ministerial measure was dropped amid general rejoicing. Several of his most active antagonists were dismissed from office or deprived of their regiments, but their spirits remained unquenched." - William Prideaux Courtney in the 11th Ed. EB. Though intended as a defense of Walpole, this pamphlet does not say that Fog's Weekly Journal was wrong to attack him - only that they overstepped their bounds by calling for his assassination. Juggling the power of political protest in the public press with freedom of speech was always a tricky affair. Responding in 1734 to the concerns of Queen Caroline over these, and other controversies Walpole said not to worry too much about it: "Madame, there are 50,000 men slain in Europe, and not one Englishman." VERY RARE. W140.

Russell, William Howard (1820-1907).
MY DIARY. North and South.
pp. xxii, 602. Penciled ownership of Richard Lee (?). Large 12mo. Early quarter leather over marbled boards binding. Spine and extremities very worn with loss. Hardbound. The author was acting as war correspondent for the London Times. Ref: Howes 540; Sabin 74402. We do wonder who this early owner was - Richard Lee! "When the early secessionist threats were made by American southerners, William Howard Russell, a British journalist of international repute, was sent to the United States as a correspondent for the London Times. Besides dispatching letters to the Times, he kept a detailed personal diary in which he described the people he encountered, the social and cultural milieu, and the political confrontations. This new edition of Russells journal consists of selections from the complete Diary, which was originally published in 1863. Arriving in New York in March 1861, Russell traveled extensively through North and South, visiting both rural and urban areas, talking with both blacks and whites. Since Russells reports were known to sway public opinion, Union and Confederate officials, including Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, were anxious to cooperate with him. Pleading immunity, Russell refused openly to favor either side, but did feel free to issue highly critical evaluations of people, events, and customs. The American public became increasingly wary of his reportage as nationalistic feeling deepened on both sides. After he published several unpopular commentaries, the American press generally lambasted Russell for snobbery and for enjoying undeserved privilege. By 1862, he was denied access to essential news sources at the front which thus concluded his mission as a war correspondent. Few people traveled as widely throughout the United States in 1861 as did Russell and no other journalist interviewed as many Union and Confederate leaders in so short a time. His balanced appraisal of social and political life at the advent of the Civil War provides a fascinating description of Americans as no American could have seen them. " - From a blurb about a 1987 edition of the Diary. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SHELF W29
