Among the officers "Capt. Ronald Reagan" is listed as "Honorary Pres." he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 though not overseas Arlene S. Polito as "Active Pres." Helen L. Staber as Vice President and Ruth Reiter as Secretary. Typical fanzine fare: A new letter to members "From Our Star" plenty of chitchat about his comings and goings and those of his co-stars new honorary members letters from actors Jinx Falkenburg and Jim Brown to Ruth Reiter a "Reagan Club Album" in which three postage stamp size glossy photographs have been affixed recent fan magazine appearances a long patriotic poem etc. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope postage and cancellation corner removed alas showing this copy actually belonged to the club's secretary Ruth Reiter. Washington DC: J. & G.S. Gideon n.y. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 8pp. Very good. Lightly age toned; binding traces at margin; contemporary "39" in brown ink at upper right corner of first page. An attractive and clean-edged first edition of this attack on the Democratic eighth U.S. president undated but certainly published in 1848. After losing his bid for reelection to Whig candidate William Henry Harrison in 1840 Van Buren's opposition to Texas annexation in 1844 lost him the vote of pro-slavery Democrats and he failed to get the nomination and in 1848 the Free Soil Party gave him the nomination. Though his views had become more anti-slavery over the years this no-holds-barred criticism calls him "the great nucleus of the South and the greatest enemy of the free institutions of the North" -- among many less tactful labels. Quite a few of his letters are excerpted to show his support of slavery. This pro-Whig piece then warns supporters against being tempted to support Van Buren and stresses the advantages of Zachary Taylor "the honest man the true patriot the frank intelligent humane soldier and the man of the People" over Democratic candidate Lewis Cass "aggressive wars the resistance of the popular will the constant exercise of the veto the one man power the extension of slavery". Too secondary to warrant inclusion in Wise and Cronin. Not in Sabin. J. & G.S. Gideon paperback

Dougal from a Daguerreotype by Whipple." Interesting nonauthorial gift inscription on front flyleaf: "Presented to E.G. Ryan Esqr / for his little son / by Jas. L. Woodside / Washington May 1854." Edward George Ryan 1810-80 was a well-known lawyer judge and politician of Madison Wisconsin while Woodside was an obscure government official who served as clerk of the House Committee of Claims. First edition of this collection of memorial tributes to Webster from his colleagues in the Congress of the United States. Webster (1782-1852) was a lawyer, famous for the power of his oratory. He served in the House of Representatives from 1812, and then in the Senate from 1827 until his death. Josiah White (1781-1850) was an early pioneer in the advancement of antracite coal for heating and manufacturing. Along with this he also helped establish a better transportation industry for transport of this coal and other material in the Delaware Valley and the Lehigh Valley regions.
