Si conobbero a Parigi nel 1909, in un caffè dove si incontravano i rivoluzionari russi in esilio: il loro legame si nutriva dell'ardore politico, dell'ebbrezza di ideare e partecipare a un cambiamento storico epocale, ma anche di fascinazione, attrazione e tenerezza. Inessa è sepolta per volere di Lenin davanti alle mura del Cremlino vicino a John Reed, ma è stata cancellata dai libri di Storia. Il capo della Rivoluzione non poteva essere macchiato dalla meschinità di un adulterio borghese. Ritanna Armeni, che ha seguito le sue tracce nelle poche testimonianze e biografie esistenti e ha ripercorso i suoi passi in Europa, ci restituisce il ritratto fremente, dolce e indomabile di una donna che più che al passato sembra appartenere al nostro futuro: inquieta e non catalogabile, piena di contraddizioni eppure integra nelle sue passioni, capace di amare perché libera, rivoluzionaria nel privato e nel politico.
