ill., br. Emerge da queste pagine la ricca personalità della Contessa di Castiglione, delineata attraverso la ricostruzione dell'ambiente familiare e delle principali vicende della sua vita. Un'esistenza che fu molto legata alla Spezia ed al suo golfo, di cui in diversi scritti esalta il paesaggio incantevole, la felice posizione geografica, la bontà dei frutti del territorio e le specialità gastronomiche come la mesciüa, «la mistura di grano tanto ricercata» che voleva far conoscere agli amici francesi. Dell'amore per quella città, oggi scomparsa, la Rapallina ci lascia ampia testimonianza, attraverso le numerose lettere inedite, indirizzate all'«integro suo fattore», il pittore Agostino Fossati, che l'autrice pubblica e trascrive integralmente per la prima volta in questo libro. Lettere in cui tra l'altro, dopo il definitivo distacco dalla sua «ingrata, ingiusta, amata città», chiede a Fossati di dipingere per lei Spezia «come era prima», per portare a Parigi l'immagine del suo joli golfe in «due o quattro quadri grandi ben fatti e dettagliati dove si veda tutta la Spezia e il golfo che tutti qui mi domandano vedere».
