According to Whitman bibliographer Joel Myerson: "Whitman helped to write and to edit this book." In BAL vol. 9 Michael Winship says Whitman contributed the account of his birthplace antecedents on the first 24 pages and revised the text of pages 154-236. BAL printing 2 without mention of G. P.
