‎CHICAGO ILLINOIS IL ESTES PARK DENVER COLORADO. Good. 1939. The diaries continue through his years in college and the NROTC during World War II and the years following the war. His family was evidently well - off as he wrote of receiving a gift from the maid on his birthday. Mr. Schobinger had a real love of the outdoors scouting and sports as a teen and continued these activities as he grew older in spite of a very active business and social life. He wrote of climbing skiing and hiking and took many slides of the park. Some of the entries in the author's earlier diaries are brief consisting of a line or two. As he grew older the entries became longer and more detailed. He had beautiful neat handwriting and the diaries are very legible written in ink and easily read. Also included with this diary lot are three blank diaries one from 1948 and two from 1957 which were used for his collection of leaves from various species of plants. Included as well are some odds and ends of ephemera he saved in the diaries - lists and scores of games a TWA brochure a report card a rather raunchy letter from someone named Chuck and a few other odd pieces. ‎CHARLES W JEWELL‎

‎1878 and 1884 ORIGINAL GROUP OF TWO 2 DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG VERMONT MAN TRYING HIS HAND AT MINING AND HOPING TO NOT END UP AMBUSHED BY INDIANS LIKE HIS FATHER‎

‎TOWLE CALIFORNIA. Good. 1878. On offer are two 2 original manuscript diaries handwritten by Charles W. Jewell b.1861 of Orange County Vermont. Dated 1878 Charles would be 17 years old and 1884 when Charles was twenty-three. The first book details his life at home in Vermont; the second diary finds Charles in Towle California working and mining until November 5th when by stage train and steamship he returns to Vermont. What is particularly fascinating about Charles' experience out west is firstly that the town of Towle located 2 miles east of Dutch Flat in Placer County California has a remarkable history: the town's founders the Towle family were also originally from Orange County Vermont. A huge coincidence or was Charles purposely reacquainting with folks from his home The second diary has an even more remarkable connection between Charles and the West which may very well be his own father who research suggests also Charles Jewell who lived in Umatilla County around Pendleton and whose death was infamously recorded: One online source provides: "1878….Umatilla County Oregon Mr. Charles Jewell hearing of the Indian outbreak secured an equipment of guns and carried them to his herders who were tending his sheep about thirty-five miles from Pendleton. He stopped at a rancher's door for a friendly chat and had barely alighted from his horse when a volley of shots from some ambushed Indians laid him on the ground. The other man was killed and Mr. Jewell was left for dead. When the Indians had gone he crawled into the house and secured a pair of blankets and a shingle. On the shingle he wrote: "Charles Jewell shot by Indians is in the brush near by call me if you see this." The wounded man then dragged himself to the road posted his sign here and crawled into the brush where he wrapped himself in the blankets. For three days and nights he lay without food or water and when finally some passing men found his sign and were led to him by his feeble answer to their call it was too late. He died a few days afterward in Pendleton." He also writes of a short trip to Lake Tahoe and Truckhee. On his way home by steamship down the Columbia River they stop in Pendleton and he writes about stopping at his "father's grave." Here are some snippets: 1878 "I wish you all a happy new year. Pleasant. I was up to Evins. Katie was up thare. I went down to W. River to school in a wagon. Katie was down thare and all the rest…….I went down to W. ‎CHARLES WELLINGTON FURLONG‎

‎1915 ORIGINAL EXPEDITION JOURNAL AND TRAVEL SCRAPBOOK TO WEST AFRICA AND THE ISLANDS OFF THE WEST COAST FOR HIS DAUGHTER RUTHIE HANDWRITTEN AND COMPILED BY A TRUE RENAISSANCE MAN WITH THE BACKDROP OF WWI LOOMING‎

‎Good. 1915. On offer is a remarkable original 1915 illustrated manuscript travel journal/scrapbook by the renowned Renaissance man Charles Wellington Furlong of Massachusetts lovingly created deliciously detailed for his daughter Ruthie. The noted trip to Madeira and the Canary Islands 'Morocco Etc. A Story' was sponsored by Harvard from which a number of academic writings from this voyage were written including the Harvard Alumni magazine publishing an article on the expedition written by Henry Amory citing C.W. Furlong as a representative of Harper's and Dr. Erving as the ship's doctor. Researchers and historians will no doubt understand the precariousness of the expedition given World War I served as a backdrop and ocean travel was risky even for Americans not in the War. Both Amory and Dr. Erving are mentioned. This expedition became the basis for an article in the March 1919 issue of Harper's called "Hunting with the Lords of the Dezertas" this charming book is fanciful; includes illustrations that include Furlong's own rather cartoon-like watercolor sketches photographs postcards ephemeral pieces cut from magazines clever puzzles and even a real now dried flying fish. Furlong was a fascinating individual whose life credits include: an officer of the Massachusetts Naval Brigade partook in scientific expeditions for the US that also provided military and political intelligence appointed to the War College during 1923-1924 created the Geographic Military Intelligence Division produced a series of tactical field handbooks for officers on Mexico Siberia and Russia about the oil production facilities named a member of the American delegation to the Paris Peace Conference served as a military aide to President Wilson Rome as a military attaché providing intelligence about the Middle East and the Balkans emissary to the Sheik of Senoussi King Faisal Major General Sir Harry Watson General Sir Archibald Wavell and Field Marshall Allenby establish a voting system in Tacona Africa from designing ballots and setting up polling places in remote areas and much much more.
