JOSEPH HOLMES
1850 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A WELL-TO-DO YOUNG MAN WHO EXPERIENCES HOMESICKNESS AND DEPRESSION AS HES SENT OFF TO CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS TO STUDY FOR HIS HARVARD ENTRANCE EXAM
KINGSTON CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS MA HARVARD. Good. 1850. On offer is the diary of Joseph Holmes an 18 year old boy who leaves his home in Kingston Massachusetts in 1850 to be tutored for the college examination in Cambridge Mass. presumably for entrance into Harvard University. On the first page Holmes writes: The Intention of this Journal is as well and faithfully as I am able to carry out my purpose to contain a description of all my actions of my advancement in study of my pastimes of my expenditures and all such other matters as may be interesting for myself parents and other friends to whom it shall always be open in after time to review neatly written down each day at an appointed period set especially apart for the purpose. He begins his journal as follows: "This morning for the first time I left the place of my Nativity the Home of Eighteen years the Friends of my infancy and Youth the Companions of a happy Boyhood the scenes of a brief but gladsome experience and more than all the immediate presence and supervision of my Parents for a long absence but I trust not separation. He writes of his farewells to his family and takes the train to school with his father: "Having seated myself in the cars I was soon beyond Kingston and summoning all my courage I tried to appear cheerful. The Hon Daniel Webster occupied a seat directly in front of me. Upon leaving the cars I perceived Capt A Baker. After our arrival we proceeded directly to the Fitchburg Station and took the Harvard Branch for Cambridge about to be my dwelling place. Holmes finds a boarding house to live in Cambridge. He becomes homesick very soon and to add to his misery the weather is very poor with constant rain. He writes: "My room is dark disagreeable and cold. I am obliged to wrap a coverlet about me to keep comfortable. I never before have seen so dusty and muddy a place as this is it is difficult to decide which is the worst - one day you are covered with dust the next splattered with mud which resembles ashes and water." However he does take to his studies with his tutor very well: I went to my Tutor an hour earlier instead of my appointed one for other days. My lesson being well acquired and ____ I happily began to prepare myself for my first walk into Boston and later I spent most of the morning in study preparing my lesson. Mr. Lowe seems to be very well satisfied with my advancement - I told him this morning he must scold if I was not smart enough. In spite of the poor weather Holmes does walk quite often to Boston and around the area. He visits Mount Auburn and writes of the beautiful monuments and the simple beauty of the chapel. He also visits Harvard Hall: "we went over to Harvard Hall and viewed all the paintings and portraits. Some of them are splendid pictures. The principal room is the place where the students practice forensics. Shall I ever tremble on that stage myself thought I as I saw it and after that came this encouragement.Shall I ever make those before me in this Hall to tremble." Holmes is an excellent and mellifluous writer: Here we have another dull rainy homesick day. The clouds seemed to be overloaded with water and are pouring forth their liquid contents plentifully and continually. Holmess father must have done business in Boston as Holmes meets him quite often at the depot. His father keeps his son updated on the news from home as well as with letters and the diary contains mentions of deaths marriages and family news. There are no entries from May 27 until Oct 20 the last entry in the journal. In this last entry he summarizes what he had done since May. Most importantly to him he passed the "dreaded college examination". He writes I studied very steadily during the month of June and a fortnight of July preparing.July myself the pleasure of a few visits home. He also wrote of the Fourth of July Celebration in Boston and the great Quarter Celebration of the June 17th: "I spent the day with Mrs. Barker having just returned from Kingston. Mr. Everett delivered the Oration in one of the Ship Houses of the Navy Yard which was beautifully decorated and arranged for the occasion." Edward Everett was a US Representative a US Senator Governor of Massachusetts and Secretary of State. He was also President of Harvard from 1846 to 1849. In this same long entry the Holmes mentions another historical event that occurred in July 1850: "On the 10th of July I went home with my tutor Mr. Lowe to spend a day with Father and Mother before the examination. We carried with us the sad news of the death of President Z Taylor. He finishes the entry by stating: I returned to Cambridge and entered upon my Collegiate Course when I should have also returned to any Journal but for various reasons I have delayed this long. At the very end of the book There are two pages of the Account of Joseph A. Holmes in which Holmes writes down his various expenses for the month of May such as Carriage to convey Trunk - $.25 1/2 Lb. Confectionary - $.10 1 pr. Congress Gaiters - $3.00 1 Pr. Pants - $5.00 and a number of others. The final page of the book is titled Memoranda of Correspondence of J. A. H. and contains a column of Correspondents alongside columns of Letters written and Letters recd with the amount written next to each name. The diaries duration is from May 7-26 and an entry on October 20 1850. There are 28 handwritten pages in total in the book which is roughly 70 pages in length. It is bound in brown marbled paper with a piece of black cloth on the spine; Both covers are detached from the text block. JOSEPH L OCTAVE LEBRUN
1888 ORIGINAL FRENCH LANGUAGE MANUSCRIPT BOOK OF POETRY ESSAYS AND OPINION BY A LATE 19th CENTURY MONTREAL MAN
MONTREAL QUEBEC CANADA. Good. 1888. On offer is a fascinating collection of prose and poetry written in the late 19th century by a French Canadian writer from Montreal. Measuring 5 inches by 3.25 inches this flip-style note book contains 88 pages and is approximately 60% complete. The cover and pages and in good condition. The binding has loosened and several pages are loose but all are accounted for. The handwriting is neat and legible. It is written in French. The author is Joseph L. Octave LeBrun. The collection was written in 1888. He notes in the journal that he lives in Longue Pointe Montreal. Casual research has not found additional biographical information on LeBrun. However it is clear from his writing that he is a well-educated man. The collection consists of essays on various topics poems and some personal writings. Much of it is in the romantic style popular in late 19th century literature. He begins with the following essay on the advantages of Marriage - Avantages du Marriage: "L'homme trouve dans la femme une douce compagne une sincere ami qui lui offre tout ce que la nature a des plus seduisant de plus precieux qui lui procure la satisfaction des desires les plus tendres lui fournit la societe la plus agreable; qui lui prodigue tous les soins dont il peut avoir besoin ." - "The man finds in the woman a sweet companion a sincere friend who offers him all that nature has most seducing the most precious which gives him the satisfaction of the most tender desires furnishes him with the most agreeable society; who gives him all the care he may need". His poetry begins: "Pour toi seul oh crois moi Je garde un mot supreme Ce doux mot c'est je t'aime Et je ne le dis qua toi" - "For you alone oh believe me I keep a word supreme this sweet word it's I love you And I only say it to you". Another piece is entitled simply Lettre Letter: "La premiere fois que mes regards si fixerent sur vous je senti un fremissement delicieux qui me revela les sorts de mes sentiments ." - "The first time my eyes were so fixed on you I felt a delightful stirring that revealed to me the spells of my feelings ." He signs the letter to the unidentified object of his feelings: "Votre Adorateur" - "Your worshipper". This is a delightful collection of writings from a well-educated and romantic person. It is an excellent example of the type of romantic literature written at that time. It would be of obvious interest to someone studying or researching such literature from that period.; French Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 19TH CENTURY; 1880s; CANADA; QUEBEC; MONTREAL; POEMS; FRENCH POEMS; JOSEPH L OCTAVE LEBRUN; 19TH CENTURY POETS IN MONTREAL; 19TH CENTURY ROMANTIC LITERATURE; FRENCH CANADIANS; LONGUE POINTE MONTREAL; FRENCH LANGUAGE CANADIAN POETRY; CANADIANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

JOSEPH STARR HAINES
1874 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A WELL EDUCATED WELL ACQUAINTED NEW HAMPSHIRE MAN WHO GRADUATED DARTMOUTH WITH DISTINCTION
New Hampshire. Good. 1874. On offer are two unique little pocket diaries from the mid-19th century. They both are slim hardcover diaries measuring 6.5 inches by 3 inches. They both have 52 pages arranged in a week-on-two-pages layout. The first is about 10% complete and the second is about 20% complete. Both also have a number of memoranda and cash account pages with many entries. They are both in good condition. These diaries were the property of Joseph Starr Haines. Haines was born in Sacramento CA in 1852. He began his career as a teacher but later became a lawyer. After practicing law for several years he moved to Iowa where he raised cattle. He never married. Haines passed away in 1936. Casual research has not turned up any additional biographical information. Both diaries have only a few entries. The value however lies in the references to other people that he makes in his entries especially the pages of entries in the Memoranda sections. These are particularly interesting as Haines was only in his early twenties when he kept these. For example: "Went to the Boston theatre to see Davy Crockett" Jan 23 1874. This would have been the popular touring play of its time by Frank Murdoch. "Cane for Senator Patterson - 50 cents" April 17 1874. James Patterson was a powerful American politician who served in the United States Congress and the Senate representing New Hampshire. He is best known for his role in the Crédit Mobilier Scandal of 1873. He was found guilty of perjury and efforts were underway to expel him when his term expired. Haines obviously knew him well-enough to purchase a gift for him. "Spoke the Valedictory at the Commencement of Dartmouth College for 1874." June 25 1874. This is the reference that confirms the ownership of the diaries. Haines graduated from Dartmouth in 1874 and initially taught Latin and Greek in a Manchester NH high school before joining a law firm. Haines led the life of a well-educated young gentleman. He was well-acquainted with politicians and businessmen and enjoyed some of the finer aspects of life taking in theatre concerts opera and dinners. The second diary 1877 contains a number of references to stage and theatre personages: Charles Fechter Mar 12 1877 - French actor famous in Paris and London; Clara Louise Kellogg Mar 16 1877 - American-born singer; Francesca Janauschek Apr 13 1877 - Czech-born stage actress; Edwin Booth May 1 1877 - famous American stage actor. Saw the President of the United States today his cabinet and the military force of the State of Massachusetts - It was a fine spectacle. Not much enthusiasm but an immense concourse of people. June 26 1877. Much can be inferred from his memoranda entries and his cash accounts. In March 1877 alone he went out to dinners 13 times and attended 4 theatre or opera productions. This is an excellent study of the life and lifestyle of a gentleman in urban New England in the 2nd half of the 19th century. A historian or researcher would find them full of the small details that taken together paint a picture of a successful and educated man who has time to enjoy some of the cultural amenities developing in the United States. A researcher delving into the cultural life of America at that time could find a number of valuable cross-reference points in the entries. Edwin Booth was the brother of John Wilkes Booth the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. In one of those ironic moments in history Edwin Booth had saved the life of Lincoln's son Robert only months before the assassination. Republican Rutherford B Hayes was elected president in 1876 in bitterly contested election. Some southern democrats threatened to march on Washington raising the spectre of armed conflict again. Hayes and his supporter reportedly agreed to the Compromise of 1877 wherein he was allowed to assume the presidency in return for withdrawing all remaining federal troops from the former Confederate states.; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1870s GILDED AGE UNITED STATES NEW ENGLAND NEW HAMPSHIRE CULTURAL LIFE MASSACHUSETTS THEATER LIFE IN 1870S AMERICA URBAN LIFE IN 1870S LAWYERS CATTLE BREEDERS JOSEPH STARR HAINES; DARTMOUTH COLLEGE; RUTHERFORD B HAYES COMPROMISE OF 1877; EDWIN BOOTH; CHARLES FECHTER; CLARA LOUISE KELLOG; FRANCESCA JANAUSCHEK IOWA SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

JOSEPHINE AND SHIRLEY CORNELL
1897 - 1898 & 1899 ORIGINAL TRIO 3 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES HANDWRITTEN OF TWO 2 MASSACHUSETTS SISTERS FILLED WITH COMINGS GOINGS AND DOINGS OF A POPULAR PAIR OF YOUNG LADIES
BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS WILMINGTON. Good. 1897. On offer are a rare collection of three family diaries dating from the late 19th century. Belonging to two sisters the diaries offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of 2 middle-class young women at the turn of the century in Boston MA. The group of the two diaries 1897 & 1898 measures 5 inches by 3 inches. The first contains 181 pages and the second 365 pages each plus memoranda and are approximately 95% and 75% complete respectively. The third diary 1899 measures 3.25 inches by 2.25 inches and contains 365 pages. It is approximately 85% complete. The 1897 diary shows wear on the cover but it is intact as are all pages within. The other two diaries are in good condition as well. Also included is an envelope containing ephemera dating back to 1859. Many of these small items provide a wealth of information. These diaries belong to Josephine and Shirley Cornell. They lived in Wilmington north of Boston MA. Two of them belonged to 18 year old Josephine Cornell. Josephine's diaries cover the years 1897 and 1898. The third diary from 1899 is written by Josephine's sister Shirley M. Cornell. Their father is Henry Lyman Cornell a music teacher and their mother was Harriet S. W. Cornell. They had an older brother Worthington Cornell and three younger siblings - France Henry Jr. and Katherine. Josephine eventually married to Joseph Robert Hodgson on October 31st. 1905. The family also lived in Malden and Medford Massachusetts. She passed away 1960. The diaries are replete with the happenings that fill a young woman's life. There are references to family incidents such as their father breaking his leg after being thrown out of a buggy dancing school many trips to Boston balls buggy rides vacations music lessons at the conservatory and much much more. The diaries open with this: "Last night I went to a New Year's party and didn't get home till 12:15 at which time I was 18 years old. Today papa and mama gave me a ring with a lovely garnet in it and ma gave me a fine big bible and this diary. G. Peck sent me a fancy calendar in the mail and F. Roberts a 1 lb box of Hugler's." Jan1 1897 "They had the sleigh party tonight. Abner took Shirley. They had six horses. There were only 23 went and they had to pay 55 cents a piece. They went to Watertown where they got out and had hot chocolate and got home about 11. I didn't go. Feb 5 1897. She notes William McKinley's inauguration which was the first inauguration ever to be filmed: "McKinley's inauguration day. Fair. I went over to L. this morning and again this afternoon. George is home today sick. There was a big explosion in the subway of Tremont of Boston. 10 killed 50 injured. Mrs. Root was in a store opposite. All the windows along the street smashed." Mar 6 1897. She notes her sister Lill's birthday May 5th a summer boat trip July 21st and her sister Shirley visiting the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor. Sept 25 The autumn is taken up with many social events. 1898 continues with her social swirl: "Ma has been making over an Indian Muslin that Rose H. gave me. It is awful pretty. All embroidered. I wore it tonight to the "Officers Party" with Harvey. I danced every dance but last and had a lovely time. We came down in a hack at 6 o'clock. This year Jack H. was Major. He was influenced to take Ruth the daughter. My cousin Harris was an Ex Major yes!" Feb 18 1898. In April the reader is introduced to someone who will come to play a large role in her life. Her friend Lill had brought a friend of hers over to visit a few times - Jack Hodgson. On April 19th he is accompanied by his brother Joseph. Josephine and Joe will marry eight years later. "Most all the cyclists have gone to Concord. I went to ride all around Malden. Lill for Fred and S. went to Lill's and played cards. Rained all afternoon. Joe and Jack Hodgson and Lill came over in evening. G. Peck asked me to go to ride Saturday." Apr. 19 1898. She was not unaware of larger events going on: "Hurried up to Park St. from which at 7 this morning to see the Lawrence Light Guards depart for Gloucester. Big crowd. N. H. L. Cadets escorted them to the station. . May 24 1898. The Lawrence Light Guard was a militia unit from the immediate area that was leaving to fight in the Spanish American War that had broken out in April of that year. She notes the fall of Santiago de Cuba to American troops miss-identifying it as Saratoga: ". Saratoga fallen. Capture of Spanish fleet. War seems going on all this time and I've written nothing about it. Oh my." July 12 1898. The third diary belongs to her sister Shirley. It covers the year 1899. Again it takes the form of a chatty recollection of comings and goings with friends and social events. "President McKinley is making a visit to Boston and France and I went in town to see him on his arrival. We also saw plainly Delong Alger Gov. Wolcott Maj. Quincy Sec. Gage etc. Went to a whist party over to the Misses Robinson's" Feb 16 1899. Tonight came of the final ball which should have closed the dancing school but five more lessons are to be given. Harry came out with W. to go and stay over night. Mattie Tarbell and Mr. Wright also passed the night. I went to bed 1:50. Danced every one but one. Mar 10 1999 Her entries stopped in September. Accompanying the diaries is a small envelope containing about 2 dozen assorted newspaper clippings announcements calling cards and photographs. These however date much earlier - generally late 1850's to early 1860's. There is no explanation as to why they were part of the diaries and there does not seem to be an obvious family connection to the Cornells. A small placard announces Wood's Minstrels playing at the Athenaeum in South Boston on Thursday September 8 1859. Among its featured presentations are The Patriotic Darkey and Darkies on the Levee. There is a captioned undated photograph of Libby Prison. Libby Prison was an infamous Confederate prison at Richmond Virginia during the American Civil War. It gained a notorious reputation for the overcrowded and harsh conditions under which officer prisoners from the Union Army were kept. A newspaper clipping lists ships that have arrived in Boston harbor from all over the world. Included in the listing is the ship's name her owners and from where she was sailing. A historian would find this a rich collection of information. There is a great deal of small detail as well as a wider perspective of life at the end of the 19th century. The sisters reference many people by their full names which makes this an excellent genealogical reference tool. An urban historian or geographer focused on the City of Boston would find a wealth of information in these as well as being an excellent cross-reference tool.It is a superb look at life at the close of the 19th century through the eyes of 2 young women who enjoy a comfortable stable life in the Boston area.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 19TH CENTURY 1890S CORNELL SISTERS; JOSEPHINE CORNELL; SHIRLEY CORNELL; JOSEPHINE HODGSON LAWRENCE LIGHT GUARD; USS CONSTITUTION; OLD IRONSIDEDS; PRESIDENT WILLIAM MCKINLEY; BOSTON BOSTON HARBOR WILMINGTON MASSACHUSETTS MIDDLESEX COUNTY MEDFORD YOUNG WOMEN IN 1890S AMERICA YOUTH LIFESTYLE AT THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY TREMONT STREET SUBWAY EXPLOSION PARTIES IN 1890S SOCIAL LIFE IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY BOSTON ENTERTAINMENT IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY WOOD'S MINSTRELS AMERICAN MINSTRELS SHOW LIBBY PRISON PHOTO MIDDLESEX COUNTY GENEALOGY RECREATION ACTIVITIES IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

In fall she's screening onions then back to work at Seville. Of particular interest to local historians and collectors are her entries that start on Sept. 18 and continues until Sept. 21 when the disastrous "Long Island Express" Hurricane of 1938 blows through. On Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. the dike holding back the Connecticut River breaks. Flooding everywhere crops washed out barns blown down no phone or lights. Ten people slept at home. According to records the 3000 people of Hadley were evacuated to Amherst as result of flooding. Standard small diary with color maps calendar. Josephson, Emanuel M
The Truth About Rockefeller "Public Enemy No. 1" - Studies in Criminal Psychopathy
New York City: Chedney Press. Good. 1964. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. "The subject of Rockefeller gangsterism and brigandage alone is far too vast for a volume of this limited scope that is intended to supplement the author's earlier work Rockefeller "Internationalist" The Man Who Misrules The World. The reader is referred to it and to the many volumes listed in the bibliography of this volume for further but still very incomplete records of the Dynasty's rascality and criminality." - Preface. vi 277 p. Clean tight and unmarked with moderate wear. A quality example of this outspoken critique of the man who would go on to become Vice-President to Gerald Ford. ; 12mo . Chedney Press paperback

JOSÉ A. GARCÍA CONEJO JAVIER GONZÁLEZ MARTÍN
