This copy has Todd / Bowden's title leaf variant 2 i.e. Leipzig / Bernhard Tauchnitz / date; and their copyright variant C3: i. e: "Printing Office of the Publisher." This copy has the "Erlowest Lake George" bookplate of Edward M. Shepard. According to the DAB Edward Morse Shepard 1850-1911 was born in New York. Raised in Brooklyn he spent his summers at Lake George. Shepard was a highly skilled lawyer and an active reformer against the corruption of Tammany Hall. He accepted the nomination for mayor of New York in 1901. It was Shepard along with Everett Wheeler who drew up the bill that applied the principles of civil service to New York. Shepard wrote often on the law for periodicals but his only book was MARTIN VAN BUREN 1888 generally considered a minor classic of political biography. brossura Salvatore Morelli, importantissima anche se non sufficientemente conosciuta figura dell'area riformista italiana, opera e scrive nella seconda metà dell'ottocento. Le sue poderose riflessioni si concentrano sulle disuguaglianze sociali, storico-culturali, che penalizzano e sviliscono la figura femminile. Nelle pagine dei suoi scritti, più volte lo studioso e politico pugliese di Carovigno fa osservare come sia del tutto ingiustificato, disutile e antieconomico il processo discriminatorio nei confronti della donna. Ha una visione economica, sociale e umana oltremodo moderna. Focalizzare l'attenzione sui diritti umani e dar voce alle donne e ai più deboli della società per lui è una priorità sociale oltreché un dovere morale. È stato tra i più moderni e cosmopoliti degli italiani; è stato un pioniere con le sue concezioni addirittura avveniristiche - alcuni parlavano di utopia - per quel che riguardava il concetto della donna e del suo importante ruolo nella società; aveva uno sguardo che andava oltre l'orizzonte del tempo. Le proposte di Morelli, come si vedrà, erano in anticipo di circa cento anni, infatti per vederle realizzate bisognerà aspettare il nuovo diritto di famiglia del 1975: è stato un profeta inascoltato. Le donne, cui vuol dare i diritti che spettano loro, sono le donne invece cancellate dal Codice unitario. Morelli si fa portavoce delle rivendicazioni delle femministe italiane che non possono parlare in aula. Alcuni suoi spunti sulla condizione femminile e il sistema giuridico normativo che lo suggella paiono a un lettore frettoloso utopistici e irrealizzabili, ma se si guarda con più attenzione si scopre che il deputato italiano recupera con le sue proposte pensieri antichi e blasonati che si snodano fra "La Repubblica" di Platone, l'"Utopia" di More e "La Città del Sole" di Campanella. Riletta oggi, la posizione di Morelli è più facilmente condivisibile ma negli anni in cui veniva espressa rappresentava una profonda rivoluzione copernicana dei sistemi sociali. Emerge, nell'intellettuale pugliese, la centralità della riflessione come autostrada introspettiva che obbliga a fare i conti con se stessi e con le nostre conoscenze. Riscoprire oggi la figura di Salvatore Morelli significa anche ricordare un'Italia piena di contraddizioni che cercava di riunire sotto uno stesso tetto tante piccole Italie, una diversa dall'altra per tradizioni, idiomi, economia e politica.
