‎Dora J Bradbury Pinkham‎

‎1910-1914 Diary of a Remarkable Mount Holyoke and Columbia Graduate Who Would Make History As Maine’s First Female State Legislator and Senator‎

‎Maine Usa. Fair with no dust jacket. 1910-1914. Hardcover. On offer is the five-year diary of Dora J. Bradbury Pinkham 1891-1941 of Fort Kent Maine. Dora kept this diary while completing her undergraduate degree at Mount Holyoke College graduated 1913 and her Master’s degree at Columbia University graduated 1914. Less than a decade after graduation she made political history and became a pioneer for women in politics in the state of Maine see BIO NOTES following the diary description. Dora’s entries throughout her post-secondary education show her to be devoted to Christ her music sport and expanding her mind. She attends lectures outside of school hours on a range of topics studies incessantly is an available friend and daughter and makes space for her passions for music and sport when possible. She seizes opportunities such as joining the college debate team. It is no wonder she made a political splash a few years later and changed the landscape of Main politics for generations of women to come. Everything Dora writes in her college years offers a window into the woman the Sun Journal would describe in 1923 when she entered the Maine legislature the following way: “She has a cheery smile a laughing kind of voice can see a joke and is decidedly human in every way”. At the tender age of 18 Dora was already keeping an eye on politics: “A Democratic landslide. First Dem. Governor elected in 30 yrs when this Plaisted’s father was governor…” Sept 13 1910 Dora is referring to the election of Governor Frederick William Plaisted whose father had been governor from 1881-1883. “Election day - College vote. Wilson 43 Roosevelt 180 Taft 160…the results of the real election. Wilson’s landslide! Took Jennie Lewis to the Senior-Freshman reception. Good time” Nov 5 1912. She does a nice job describing student life at Mount Holyoke College. Her time there was focused on academics music rehearsals she played the banjo of all things and was in glee club and performances hockey and Christianity: “Rev E. Paddock spoke in chapel on “as your day is so shall your strength be”. Hate to think I won't see him again for a year or maybe more. English Exam in A. M. .Not so bad. Studied Math in P. M. In little room D. H. Botany in eve. Postcard from Sadie” Jan 31 1910. “Mountain Day…Miss Bridges invited all her advisees to breakfast…the Holyoke ranges 23 peaks miles Took us over 3…Home at 4: 30…” Oct 12 1910. “Structure paper back. Favorable criticism for which I was wisely prepared by Miss Lester. “Good understanding . Discrimination and rigor of thought “. Mission committee meeting at nine. Was able to play hockey today” Oct 13 1911. Dora completed her Master’s of Arts at Columbia in only one year and she seems to be too busy to keep a diary for much of it. As her career at Columbia ends and her professional life begins she is sure to record it: “Went to work! Everybody very nice to me. Lots of nice oldish men there wildly interesting young woman next to me Miss Miladolfsky. Went to work on lowly wages…got so I could turn the crank quite some. Requires too much thought! ” May 11 1914. “Studied an hour and a half and did exam…all over now! Doing proof-reading in the office - very tiring” May 21 1914 This diary is a gem. Through it we learn the roots of a brave bold and unique woman who chose to enter politics as a Republican in the early 20th century. Learning about the ambitious hardworking engaged young woman Dora was allows us a window into who she became. This diary is also a precious piece of history for those interested in the earlier days of Mount Holyoke College and Columbia University. DORA JULIA BRADBURY PINKHAM BIO NOTES: Dora J. Bradbury Pinkham was born in New Limerick Maine and raised in Fort Kent. She married Niles Pinkham a lumber industry executive in 1917. Following graduation she briefly taught at Madawaska Training School. A long-time member of the Republican State Committee she ran for state legislature and in 1922 she defeated two-term Democrat William J. Audiber. Pinkham was the first woman to win election to the Maine’s legislature. Remarkably Pinkham was not only a Republican but also a “Yankee Protestant” while her district was known to be “overwhelmingly Democratic Franco American and Catholic” Potholm 2011 p. 115. While she was a one-term member of the legislature she made an impact passing five of six bills she sponsored in the Maine House of Representatives. In 1926 her political star rose higher when she became one of the first two women ever elected to the Maine senate. Following her two terms in the Senate Pinkham served as special secretary to Maine Governor William Tudor Gardiner. She was very active in her community and the state serving as the local Chairman for the Red Cross. There is much information available on Dora Pinkham but this article from the Sun Journal helps the reader to know who Dora was as a person as well as a politician: https: //www.sunjournal.com/2023/01/22/when-dora-pinkham-took-office-as-maines-fir st-woman-lawmaker-a-century-ago-the-journal-predicted-a-lot-more-by-2023/ The diary measures 7.75 inches by 5.0 inches and contains 365 pages. The covers have separated from the spine. The pages are in good condition. Dora writes regularly in 1910 through 1912 her entries becoming more scarce in 1913 and she only writes in May of 2014. The diary is about 65% complete. The handwriting is legible. Overall Fair. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎DORAZIO Piero - PAPENBERG-WEBER Annette‎

‎Piero Dorazio. Die künstlerische Formierung bis 1959. Von Annette Papernberg-Weber und Piero Dorazio handschrifltich signiert auf dem Vortitelblatt: "Annette Papenberg-Weber 17. 03. 2002" und "Piero Dorazio Stuttgart".‎

‎Basel Schwabe & Co AG Verlag 2002. 204 Seiten. Mit zahlreichen teils farbigen Abbildungen. Farbig illustrierter OKart.-Einband. 30x23 cm‎

‎* Piero Dorazio (* 29. Juni 1927 in Rom; ? 17. (Quelle Wikipedia)‎

‎1936 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF BRITISH MANDATED PALESTINE BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN BY A 16-17 YR. OLD BRITISH GIRL - HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT WITNESS TO THE FIRST ARAB INTIFADA - PALESTINIAN UPRISING TERRORISM AND STRIKE‎

‎Jerusalem British Mandated Palestine. Good. 1936. Original Cloth. Evidential to the roots of Middle Eastern terror this is the extraordinary handwritten diary of Miss Doreen M. C. daughter of General and Mrs. J. C. sister of Cynthia. This British family witnesses the very beginnings of the modern era of Middle East tensions and terrorism having been residents of Jerusalem from January 1st to mid-June of 1936. Doreen writes a significant extraordinary insightful and well written diary. A young girl of 16 or 17 we estimate too young for boys - she detests them - and too old for the usual games that girls play paraphrase she writes of her time spent traveling throughout British mandated Palestine recording daily her comings and goings and all that goes on around her. She also does a great job drawing maps and other illustrations. Doreen sums it up in her own hand: in a handwritten copy of a 1963 letter to the famed Leonard Mosley of the Sunday Times found in the book Doreen admits to having in 1936 "a passion for keeping a large diary; I wrote down incidents of the strike riots and daily murders and ambushes like a recording angel!" She is modest. 1936 was a very intense very interesting and very disturbing year - Mussolini advancing against the Abyssinians in Africa Hitler on the rise in Europe Franco tearing apart Spain the King of England dies Edward VIII rises and starts to fall and Palestine is in foment as the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem has made a heinous pact with Hitler and called on the arab populous to strike - politically and through armed conflict murdering British soldiers and Jewish civilians and many many of their own people. Doreen is a "recording angel" to all this and more. From January 1st until mid-June she is for the most part based in Jerusalem living first at the King David Hotel before moving to Talbiyeh Colony in Jerusalem. There are very few idle days; many day trips visits shopping and when they move residence on 'Murhurrem' Jerusalem's famed moving days which date changes yearly and her description of the movers and hubbub are a delightful counterpoint to the atrocities she documents. Everyday she fully details her travels around the country and the news/politics of the day - even a trip to the dentist is fraught with danger given the times. Her father was highly placed at Air Headquarters research has found he ends his service a General and OBE recipient with the British Air Department. He meets frequently with generals and 'big bugs' as she calls them. She even admits that he is doing the "hush-hush work". Doreen names many of the British Colony and quite frequently makes comments - Mr. Such and Mr. Other 'complete scoundrels'. Doreen is an information and current events savant. She reads the papers listens to the radio and pumps the transient English men and women who travel throughout the Middle East and North Africa in service of Britain for the inside info and stories. A short wave ham radio operator Doreen diligently records calls and conversations as she reaches out for more news. She can quote to the day a year before when 'Mussy' promised not to go to war. Abyssinia is very important to her. The Italians the Germans and the plight of the Jews under Hitler disturbs her to no end. Many times in her writings she makes mention for example; PC 459 police constable said such and such giving her info which she then reports: "contrary to the newspaper reports" this is what really happened. She coalesced all the info and records the real story as she sees it. Here are just a very few snippets: "Mussolini is the greatest liar on earth. Hitler is number 2. Hitler is "bats" or something for he is daring to order every German Jew youth back to Germany those who have been turned out included for conscription." "I was told a few tales of storm troops that dared not to be published. They may sound a little far fetched but I do believe them as true. Poland is treating the Jews disgustingly." "I don't know what the Arabs have to grumble about.they were only too glad to sell their land to the Jews because they thought them useless and unpaying and were glad.then they saw the Jews making them pay they get wild and demand them back. More Bombs thrown." "Arab watchmen bumped off by the strikers for not stopping work." "When I look at the finely built young Jewish blokes I cannot help wondering what holds them back they could make mince meat out the Arabs. I cannot make sense of the Jews won't retaliate." "Every one of us knew there would be trouble in Acre. Two days ago the Grand Mufti was there he addressed a large crowd and said 'The Jews are doing their best to get us out of Palestine they are killing our brother Arabs and burning our homes' up to date not a single case has occurred of an Arab home being burned but tons of Jews are homeless through arson and looting. He must be stopped." "An Arab tried to blow up a bridge today up near Nazareth and blew himself up by mistake.I expect PC 239 is chasing round finding bits of ears and toes." "Big show at Acre the Jew shot early this morning had been in the police station all night for breaking curfew and had just been released." She asks the page in front of her - how can a child in this world today care about getting married and having children when the world is so full of detestable tyrants seemingly bent on war and chaos So much is happening around her to report she has taped a number of pages of paper to the days that she has run out of space. Doreen pumps her dad for info all the time: he quite pointedly informs Doreen that he 'has specific proof the Italians are funding the Arab uprising.' She adores her father but she rightly disagrees with him at times: 'Father believes the Germans are not a worry. With the way they are spending money re-arming themselves they will be bankrupt in a year or two.' Maybe her father is trying to save her from worry but Doreen is near clairvoyant in comparison. Toward the end of June Doreen her mother and sister Cynthia are off to England and though life in London is different lacking the daily horrors of terror in Palestine Doreen continues detailing her daily life and report on the conflict. Sensational significant historical diary. The book is an indexed monthly journal that she faithfully records at the start of each month the books she has read the trips she has taken. Rarely will one find as diligent as thoughtful as opinionated and as colorful a diarist as this young lady. A number of pieces of ephemera are included with the book as Doreen inserted them - one piece is a copy of a letter she writes in 1965 from her home on the Isle of Wight. Save for a loose hinge and the crack that comes with it this book is in great shape.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY GREAT BRITAIN WORLD WAR I WW I WORLD WAR TWO II GERMANY ITALY JAPAN MIDDLE EAST T.E. ‎Doris Cuthbert Metzler‎

‎Original 1960s-1970s Collection of Diaries Handwritten by Doris Cuthbert Metzler of Michigan‎

‎Dearborn Michigan. Good with no dust jacket. 1960s-1970s. Hardcover. On offer are five diaries written by Doris Cuthbert Metzler of Michigan between 1968 and 1978. She was 57 years of age at the time the first of these diaries was writtenIn her diaries Metzler details her family’s daily life as well as specific medical issues that she and her husband Richard A. Metzler Dick as well as other family members faced over the years. The 1968 diary is replete with medical references especially regarding her mother Minnie age 82 at the time. They detail the type of care that was offered to this elderly woman who would in fact pass away the next year. “M. Went for walk and stumbled over rise in sidewalk by tree in front of our house. Fell flat skinning her knee and banging the side of her head on ground. Well padded. Getting lame in evening so took hot bath and to bed at 9: 45” December 23 1968. “V. Bad night. Lost about 4 hrs sleep hrd to get breath pain severe. Didn’t call me. Young Dick came in about 12: 30 and they talked so thought she was ok. Slept toward morning. V groggy today” June 18 1698. “DEA Sports night volleyball & swim. Organ lesson. CU meeting Dick boat meeting” October 15 1968. There is a six year gap between the 1968 diary and the next one written in 1974. In that time there has been a decline in Doris’s husband Dick’s health. She makes a number of references to Alpha Delta Kappa the education sorority she belongs to as well as the Credit Union on whose board she serves. “Wet. Did not bike to ch. Dick a little off color. No appetite. Some chest tightness. Dug up some plants” September 29 1974. “Money for ADK Init. On Nov 23. Must be to Vicki Ridge today 5: 50 ” October 24 1974. The three remaining diaries continue in the same vein: general observations about Doris’s life and work increasing details about her husband’s health and information about Doris’s community activities in the credit union and sorority. “Merve & Harriett dinner here w/Gladys Ann Les & Val – had baked stuffed chinook and roast venison. V. G” November 9 1975. “Trainable Speech picnic w/ Maxine & her kids” May 1 1976. “Dick still not feeling too well. Heart irreg. No appetite. Gets very tired with little exertion” December 11 1978. Metzler taught Speech and Language Pathology in the Dearborn Public School system for thirty four years. Her obituary notes that parents of her students referred to her as "the teacher with the wonderful smile." She was an early member of an honorary sorority of teachers called Alpha Delta Kappa. Each diary measures 5 inches by 3 inches contains 183 pages with cover binding and pages all in good condition. The 1968 diary is 90 percent complete the 1974 diary is 85 percent complete the 1976 and 1976 diaries are 70 percent complete and the 1976 diary is 75 percent complete. Metzler’s diaries offer an excellent look into the world of middle-class America at a time of tremendous growth in the United States and provide a very clear picture of how the role of women in American society had evolved. The diaries also hint at various approaches and treatments to medical ailments of the time. ; 5" x 3"; 183 pages . hardcover‎

‎DORIS L BERGLUND‎

‎1938 ORIGINAL ENIGMATIC TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A STRONG WILLED WOMAN WHO SUDDENLY CHANGES FROM ENGLISH TO SHORTHAND‎

‎WAUKEGAN ILLINOIS IL. Good. 1938. On offer is and interesting and intriguing 1938 travel diary handwritten by Doris L. Berglund of Waukegan Illinois who left from Union Station likely in Chicago to New York by train and then to Holland via steamship. While the book is about 20 pages one cannot help but be intrigued: Doris is very headstrong taking charge to change her dining arrangements when it suited her: she was to sit with a Mr. B and she changed them to sit at another table with Bill Wright of Denver Colorado headed to Paris to study - she notes that he "has girls on both sides of the ocean but doesn't seem to love any…" Most interesting given the pre war atmosphere is hen she notes a doctor "Herbert Deines" on board a "graduate of Heidelberg a Storm Troop leader army officer leader of Hitler Youth etc…" The last entry notes that the ship is headed south for the Azores. At this point Doris switches to shorthand making for a very enigmatic situation and a desire to translate the notes which we leave to the future owners. At the back of diary are detailed names and addresses of people. The 6½" x 4" book is overall G.; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF DORIS L. ‎DORIS TIBBELS‎

‎1944 - 1946 ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF 150 MANUSCRIPT LETTERS HANDWRITTEN BY AN ADORING BALTIMORE HOMEMAKER WORSHIPING HER HUSBAND FROM AFAR KEEPING UP HEARTH HOME AND THEIR HAPPY BABY UNTIL HE RETURNS‎

‎BALTIMORE MARYLAND TO NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA. Good. 1944. On offer is a large archive of 150 original 1944 - 1946 manuscript letters handwritten by adoring wife and new mother Doris Tibbels of Baltimore Maryland whose homey loving letters make for an intimate look into the home front life of this charmingly head over heels in love with her adored 26 year old serviceman husband. Even when he is in Maryland at the Edgewood Arsenal and coming home many times she is still somewhat desperate in her detachment. Later while she writes of family and friends and her doings in Baltimore as the War winds down her husband is still active in New Orleans at the Special Chemical Detachment readers will feel her longing in a palpable way as if each letter is an attempt to draw him to her. She continually tells him she needs him to function in what some men might feel is a cloying manner. That said it is remarkable that she maintains the level of adoration over the years correspondence. Nearly every letter starts with whether it is a happy day or a sad day for receipt of his letters. We learn from the addresses that Charles is a T/5 or Technician Fifth Grade. Included ephemera includes clippings holiday and birthday cards military passes laundry receipts some small photographs adding further breadth to the group. ‎DOROTHEA H ENSOR‎

‎1933 - 1961 ORIGINAL GROUP OF FOUR 4 ORIGINAL 5-YR DIARIES HANDWRITTEN BY A TEENAGE TO MIDDLE AGE MARYLAND WOMAN‎

‎BALTIMORE MARYLAND. Good. 1933. On offer is a super collection of original manuscript diaries spanning 35 years handwritten by a Baltimore Maryland woman who over four 4 five-year diaries provides a fascinating well detailed description of this all-American girl's evolution from teenager and student to young married woman and new mother through to middle aged matron. The diaries belong to Dorothea H. Ensor. She was born in 1915 and passed away in 2004. The diaries begin when Ensor is 16 years old. This first volume covers the balance of her teenage years up until she was 21. The entries are fill of the events and coming and goings of a typical teenager:. I am scared. Feb 11 1932 Dr. Robertson of Goucher talked at assembly. We had a terrible Math test. I went to writers Club Miss Harrison has it now. She's so much better than Miss Ditty . Mar 1 1933 From context it appears that after high school graduation she attended Groucher College. Groucher College today is a well-recognized post-secondary institution included on the list of U.S. colleges and universities that produced the most 2017-2018 Fulbright U.S. Students. Played basketball with Lawrence in the garage. I haven't done any lessons yet. I'll have to get busy. I washed my hair today. I'm still very injured about that history paper Apr 8 1933 She notes the 1933 major earthquake that struck Log Branch CA killing over 100 people: There was a big earthquake in Los Angeles. Frank sent us a telegram that they are all right . Mar 12 1932 Her entries in the following years at Groucher College contain comments about classes and activities I worked on one drawing all morning. Its terrible. Martha says she is going to ask lots of questions when I give my report. She makes me mad. I brought all my papers home. Apr 29 1936 The second diary takes her through the war years of WWII. In the intervening 5 years she has gotten married. Repeated references to the war show up: Air planes raided Japan yesterday . Apr 119 1942 A reference to the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo I went to get my sugar ration books. Only took 15 minutes. They took out only one stamp. In 1st aid class we had transportation of victims and more artificial respiration . May 6 1942 Today is D-Day! The Allies invaded Normandy in France. They are advancing according to plans. I worked at hospital on 3S. Exciting radio all evening. The President prayed. June 6 1944 Truman announced at 7:00 P.M. that Japan had surrendered unconditionally . Aug 14 1945 Entries show her working keeping her home and maintaining a life during the war. Her husband was never enrolled apparently in the armed forces working instead in civilian production. The third diary covers the years 1952 through 1956 when she is age 36-41. It is very much concerned with domestic matters and her social life: Went to the 20th Reunion Lunch of Western - 1933 at park Plaza and helped collect money. 180 came. Fun. Ris and I went to tea dance at Mt. Wash. Club and then to a tripoli party at the Andersons.Mrs. Cole sent the Civic League money. May 24 1953 Worked around house preparing for dinner and went out to store a little while. Had Goldman's to dinner - roast beef cantaloupe & ice cream. Played records. The fourth diary covers the time period of 1962 until 1966when she is 46 to 51 years old. It concerns again mostly domestic and social activities. In the intervening 5 years it appears that she has had a daughter Ruth. I got a permanent while Ris stayed with Ruth. Ris and I went to the Baltimore Symphony Pops concert. And to Yorkshire to dinner. Mrs. Moore stayed with Ruth. Mar 10 1962 I washed clothes and worked here. Ruth went to orthodontist and came home with Ris. I went to College Club for a Citizens Grp and introduced Hugh Monaghan who spoke on Wills & Estates Nov 2 1965 This is an outstanding group of diaries. It offers an unparalleled longitudinal study of the role of women in mid-century America. Over a 35 year period it chronicles the life and times of an American woman as she grows up goes to college gets married and raises her family in mid-20th century America. For a researcher into women's studies it is a goldmine of information. A social historian will see the changing of American life directly through this woman's eyes as the years slide by.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF DOROTHEA H. ‎1887 - 1913 ARCHIVE OF FIVE 5 FAMILY DIARIES - HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT ENTRIES THROUGHOUT BY COUSINS - A TREASURE TROVE OF NE OHIO GENEALOGY AND HISTORY‎

‎Uniontown / Greentown Ohio OH. Very Good. 1887. Leather. On offer is a family archive of five 5 early Ohio diaries. Research suggests that the authors are cousins. Dorothy Hartong of Greentown Ohio writes the earliest diaries of 1887 and 1890. The other three 3 are handwritten by Carrie Raber of Uniontown Ohio. We believe Carrie who is often mentioned in the early diaries is the younger cousin who eventually returns to Uniontown Ohio. She makes mention of travels from Uniontown to Congress Lake etc. What is very unique to this archive is the contrast in personalities. Dorothy is a pious and devout Church going girl who writes of her chores and duties to both the home and Jesus. This is a fascinating look at the devotion of a young girl. Interspersed is a wealth of historical details of the area and genealogy of north-east Ohio. Carrie on the other hand is much the same in her devotion to house and home and though she mentions Sunday School the odd time mostly she mentions missing it for the least of reasons. The dates of Carrie's diaries are 1892 1907 and 1913. This is a huge family and between the two girls many many dozens if not hundreds of names of visitors attendees at events deaths funerals etc. would keep a researcher busy for a goodly long time. Three books are leather the others are cloth or paper.
