‎MARGARET C HULSEY‎

‎1857 PAIR 2 OF ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY AND MEMORY BOOKS RECOUNTING THE DEATHS AND LIVES OF MANY BELOVED FAMILY MEMBERS ALONG WITH DOZENS OF QUAKER HYMNS POEMS AND REMINISCENCES.‎

‎BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD. Good. 1857. On offer are two books from a Baltimore family in the mid 1800s professing a life of faith and determination in the wake of tragedy and loss. The two books are written by one Margaret Hulsey of Baltimore Maryland a seemingly deeply religious Quaker woman. The first book is very unique collection of hymns letters diary entries and first-hand accounts dealing with the deaths Ms. Hulsey’s family friends and loved ones. The book begins with a short passage that lays out what much of the book with deal with: death. “The first link in the family circle was broken many years ago in the removal of a beloved child at the early age of two years. But as this occurred long before the recovery of the younger children they of course have no recollection of the bereavement - To the ____ parents there was much of consolation in the reflection that their little one was ‘taken from the evil to come’ before sin had sullied the innocence of childhood. Died Nov. 30th. 1826. John Clapp - Jr. aged 1 year. 11 months. And 4 days.” Following this are pages and pages of Christian hymns poems and descriptions of grief and bereavement in the face of death both of the young child mentioned and also of someone who was presumably Ms. Hulsey’s brother. This is an interesting and unique book as much of the diary entries are written in the 3rd-person as if the author is collecting these stories of grief as a family history “An unspeakably heavier bereavement was in store for them in the death of their eldest son at the age of 32 years. Gentle and affectionate in childhood he had endeared himself to the family circle in no common manner and as he grew up to man’s estate his strongly masked character cultivated mind and clear judgement gave promise of a bright career of usefulness. During the last few years of his life particularly the all pervading influence of Christian principle was most strikingly displayed. When his bright prospect in life were clouded he weakly bowed to the dispensation and received it as a token of his Heavenly Father’s love.Died in New York on the morning of the 11th of 12th month 1848. Family H. Clapp aged 32 years. 1 month and 3 days.” The book is filled with long descriptions of family members friends and loved ones who met their deaths too early. “About six months after our dear brother’s death my warmest sympathies were weakened by the decline and removal of a beloved young friend and connection in Philadelphia - We had spent several weeks together the preceding summer in a little town.and I had learned to love and advise her gentle Christian character - The following letter speaking of her illness was from the pen of a sister.” Many of the entries in the book are like this one letters collected by Ms. Hulsey and then faithfully copied down in this book as a remembrance of someone loved who has passed. Alongside the letter are hymns and poems of a Christian nature and quotations and aphorisms taken from “The Friend’s Review” that speak to the nature of death and the overcoming of grief through Christian love. The same format is used for the deaths of Margaret Hulsey’s brother friends and longest of all her mother. Near the end of the book there are also letters that had been sent specifically to Ms. Hulsey that are copied down well-wishes and condolences from friends on the event of her mother’s death. This book has roughly 200 pages of which almost everyone has writing. Margaret Hulsey’s handwriting is neat and very legible and no smudging is evident. The first few gatherings of the book are detached from the spine but the whole thing is sewn together so the pages are not loose. Quarter leather spine with a marbled cover page. The second book is “Some extracts from the letters and diary of our beloved mother” and is also written in the hand of Margaret Hulsey. Beginning in September 1848 and continuing until her death in 1857 the book contains copies of letters sent from to family members especially Margaret as well as entries from her personal diary some short and others extending many pages. The thread throughout the diary entries is the love of Jesus and her worship of him through the Quaker church. “Baltimore - 3rd mo. - First day - ‘attended mtg. After sitting a short time in silence. L. M. Hoag appeared in present supplication - He soon of towards ___ with the words. “Ye are lively stones built up a spiritual house” carrying out the figure by applying it to stones in the quarry which must first be taken out then hammered and brought into the proper shape afterwards smoothed and polished - He was continuing the application when the mtg. Was disturbed by the sudden indisposition of H. Baldesion. In about ten minutes he resumed his discourse without any apparent confusion and embarrassment and preached an excellent sermon.” About a quarter of the book are entries from 1848-1850 and then the rest of the book is from March 1857 the beginning of the decline and death of Margaret’s mother. The first entry in 1857 concerns Margaret’s mother and father’s decision to leave America for England. Their trip to England is interesting with Margaret’s mother ruminating on her life on the sea the friends she has left behind and the future ahead for her. “Rested very well - It seems as if the motion of the boat reduces drowsiness at least this has been the effect on me - We spend much time on deck wishing to cherish all the advantages possible from the sea air. And we go up on the principle of eating at every meal even if we feel but little appetite. We passed a steamer last night supposed to be the Arctic. It gives a social gladsome feeling to pass a ship at sea. We have already seen two sails but they were distant we were unable to learn where they were from or whither bound.” When they arrive in London there are many passages of their new life there attending new Quaker Friend’s Meetings and making new friendships as well as trips to other cities to spread the word of Jesus. After 3 months they return “Just 3 months since we left the shores of America - It seems a brief space now that it is past - Soon went on deck - all things were put in ample order - the floor was scrubbed the brasser cleaned the sun was shining brightly - the broad experience of ocean before us with scarcely a ripple on the surface while our noble ship was ploughing through the waters with majestic steadiness.” Soon the diary entries end and Hulsey’s point of view takes over again: “Our dear Mother felt the heat of the water excruciatingly.soon after she accompanied Father to Phila. And Baltimore to visit their children - It was unspeakable pleasure to her to meet them again. She accordingly accompanied the family to Cape May.At the end of ten days she had a strange and alarming attack of dysentery. It yielded to medicine however but a relapse a week later placed her in a very critical situation. On First day Dr. Chesterman was called - he fully agreed with Dr. Rabson and discovered a new feature in the disease which had now assumed the character of bilious diarrhea”. The mother continues to be sick and weakens to a terrible extent. Margaret Hulsey’s description of her mother is heartbreaking and she goes into long details of the last night of her mother’s death and her eventual passing away: “The breath grew shorter and shorter and the quietly passed away without a struggle - at the same hour of the day as that beloved son who had only preceded her by about three years.” The last few pages of the book are transcripts and copies of remarks made at her mother’s funeral and an obituary of her mother in the “Friend’s Review”. The book is roughly 170 pages in length of which 150 or so have writing. It looks almost identical to the first book both of them having a small sticker on the front inside cover that reads “Sold at Raynor’s Bookstore 76 Bowery NY.” No pages have detached from the spine. Both books are in very good condition.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MARGARET C. ‎MARGARET C WEBSTER‎

‎1876 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN JOURNAL AND NOTEBOOK OF A BRIGHT YOUNG WOMAN BEING EDUCATED AT THE ABBOT ACADEMY ONE OF THE VERY FIRST SECONDARY SCHOOLS FOR WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES‎

‎ABBOT ACADEMY ANDOVER MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1876. On offer is the 1876 original handwritten journal and notebook of Margaret C. Webster a student at the Abbot Academy notable as one of the first secondary schools for educating young women in New England. This is an exceptional document of early women’s education in America. It details the things women were learning how they learned them and a bit into the personal life of one of the few women being educated in the country. The book seems to have served two purposes for Ms. Webster. First the majority of the book is a school composition/notebook. Secondly at the end of the book there is a diary for writing down personal experiences. Margaret seems to have been born in 1858 making her around 18 at the time of this journal. The majority of the Margaret C. Webster book is devoted to school related work 65 pages. This includes: Poetry – Margaret has written in her journal poems by Thackeray Proctor Homer and some quotations by Tennyson. There is also the poem “Annie and Willies Prayer” by Sophia Snow which is a Christmas poem similar to the “The Night Before Christmas.; Original essays – There is an essay by Margaret titled “World Without Imagination.”; Botany notes which include a list of 100 plants and flowers with their common name as well as their genus and specie; Notes/Discussions/Compositions on Famous Personages and Subjects – These include Tennyson Wordsworth Aristotle Byron Pope Chaucer and more; A Student Study Schedule– This contains Margaret’s schedule of morning study work for 1876 and 1877. There are a number of schedules written down here for nine different days in three different terms Fall Winter and Spring. Example: “Jan. 13 1877. From 8:30 - 9:30am: Went to prayer meeting at Chapel. 9:30 - 10:30: Studied Shakespeare. 10:30 - 11:15: Studied Botany. 11:30 - 12:00pm: Studied and did various things. From 5:15 - 6pm: Studied Shakespeare. 7:30 - 8: Studied Shakespeare. 8:30 - 9: Gymnastics. Finally there is also a 10-page section within the notebook which is not related to school but is a more personal diary. It contains two separate entries. And it is somewhat of an anomaly. It appears that the first entry of 6 pages is done by a person other than Margaret - perhaps a relative. The woman writing this section states that she is around forty years old and reports that she has just found her old diary in the attic. She proceeds to write in this journal some of the more important entries from her original diary. Thus she is copying them into this Margaret’s notebook – probably around the same time frame that Margaret used it 1870-1880. Sample entries: "Journal you this day May 1 1850 my 16th birthday have been presented to me by my father as a present. If you prove a pleasure and comfort as he says you will I will patronize your pages now unsullied. But if you prove a bother as I think you will you will at quick notice be dispatched to Hades.”; “Aug 28 1850 Journal in spite of my resolution I believe I am going to like you. Something tells me that if all other friends desert me you will be true to the last……I am to enter upon a very important period of my life. I am going away to school to Abbot Academy. I want to go because I am sick of staying at home. I am curious to see the girls there. I have about made up my mind not to like them.” The remaining entries reveal that the young girl attends the academy and greatly enjoys the experience making many new friends. In her last entry dated July 28 1854 she reports that she is graduating that day and is excited about her achievement - but sad that she is leaving friends. It is possible that this section was provided by a relative who may have also attended Abbot Academy. And perhaps the relative wanted to show Margaret that the school would be a pleasant and worthwhile experience. The author of the last four pages of this section is most probably Margaret considering the similar handwriting. The entry is titled “My Walk” and describes a walk she took into Andover Massachusetts where she lives. During her walk she strolls by a Captain Perry’s house and past the Old South Church. She also comes across Parson Watkins who is on horseback and after a greeting she returns home. As she nears her house a driverless carriage races by with the two lady occupants so absorbed in conversation that they fail to take notice of the danger they are in. Running behind them is the driver who eventually gets the carriage back under control. The notebook is 7” by 8” in size. It has worn green boards with a floral design and a bit of discoloration at points. It has a red leather spine with wear at head and foot. Pages are lightly toned but clean and the writing is neat and easily legible. The binding is tight and the ink is slightly faded but very readable. The book has approximately 75 handwritten pages of which all but a few have writing in them. Background: Abbot Academy also known as Abbot Female Seminary and AA was an independent boarding preparatory school for women boarding and day students in grades 9–12 from 1828 to 1973. Located in Andover Massachusetts Abbot Academy was notable as one of the first incorporated secondary schools for educating young women in New England. It merged with Phillips Academy in 1973 and campus buildings along School Street continue to be used for the combined school. In 1859 the "strong-willed" but "ideologically moderate" McKeen sisters — headmistress Philena and Phebe—exerted strong leadership by adopting a "school-home" approach. The years were marked by substantial expansion of buildings. The McKeens fostered the study of French and German and introduced a "systematic oral language program" on a par with that of Harvard University.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MARGARET C. ‎MARGARET ELLIOTT‎

‎1925 UNIQUE DEEPLY PERSONAL ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN DIARY OF A YOUNG LIBERATED WOMAN IN UNIVERSITY LIVING AN EXCITING SOCIAL LIFE DATING SEVERAL MEN AND EMBODYING THE QUINTESSENTIAL ‘FLAPPER’ IDEAL‎

‎PURDUE UNIVERSITY LAFAYETTE INDIANA IN. Good. 1925. On offer is an exceptional diary of the personal life of a young woman in the mid 1920s who perfectly embodies the Aesthetic and ideas of the “Flapper”. The diary is extremely personal in nature and showcases an amazing view into the life of a woman on the vanguard of a new generation of women. The diary provides fascinating insight into the mind of a young women during the 1920’s “Gilded Age”. As can be seen throughout the diary she definitely embodies the ‘liberated’ woman ideal of the time: attending University dating several men at a time hinting at casual sexual encounters and maintaining a strong individualistic streak throughout. The diary is packed with details about her ever changing and active love life. The diary belonged to Margaret Elliott a sophomore at Purdue University circa 1925. There are many entries dealing with Sorority life as she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega and briefer entries about her studies. Nevertheless the majority of the diary concerns her relationships with men and almost every page has some discussion of her thoughts about dating the personalities of boyfriends how she met them what shows they have attendedand in cases hint at sexual encounters There are also very personal entries dealing with periods of depression and times where she questions her own inability to be with just one partner and her constantly changing state of mind when it comes to her many suitors. Elliott is in so many relationships throughout the diary that it can be hard to keep track of all the names. This is an intensely personal diary of a very active young woman who represents a very new and exciting period in American history as well as women’s history in general. The diary is a fascinating read. In all it contains 368 handwritten pages. Her handwriting is very easy to read usually done in either blue ink and occasionally pencil and can be quite dense as she often takes up the entire page with her thoughts and observations. Most entries also have a small quote at the top of the page. These quotes also show an important part of Elliott’s intellectual life as many of them are from prominent feminist writers and thinkers of the time such as Sarah Grand and Margaret Widdemer as well as poets such as Tennyson Kipling and others. The last three pages also contain a number of quotes and passages and poems mostly dealing with love and womanhood. Some of the quotes also show distinct feminist thought such as: “Man may redeem the past but woman never can” “Does a woman ever marry the man who is kindest to her It is unrecorded if this has ever happened” and “There is no such thing as justice in the world!” This is one of the most personal diaries listed here. It’s definitely the type of diary that encourages the reader to turn the page and read on. The book is in good shape. The front cover and portions of the spine show a good bit of wear and tear from use and age. There are also two bits of tape on the diary that Elliott used to close off the diary from other people. It is evident Elliott thought this diary to be absolutely personal. The front cover reads “Personal. Hands off! Eyes off!” Samples of Entries: “Jan 181925. Slept until 12 o'clock Dreamed I was at home. Got up and ate dinner. Dot called up. She is a good old scout. Pinkie was not at the dance last nite but sang a serenade outside while Tex was here Oh My ! I suppose he was drunk! Rode right across the aisle in the St so confront him yesterday he couldn’t look anywhere but the window. If he wanted to come back I wonder what I’d do Tex! called me about his “ Pain “ and his episode “ last night. Here to be another horrible morning I fear.”; “Jan 311925. Had a somewhat serious conversation with Chris and he thinks “ I care an awful lot for someone else” I told him i didn't and I don’t think I do. Anyhow I could live without them all. He was not expecting me to go back Sunday P.M. and I did feel momentarily sorry for him. The show was “What Man Desires” and had for it’s “theme” Girls strive to be what the man they love ; thinks and wants them to be” it is very true I guess. I wonder wonder and wonder!”; “Jan 28 1925. Got home last night about 6:30 car broke and we had to transfer making 45 mins late. Read last night and heard all the news. Got up late this morn have a date tonight with Feister and am not at all crazy about seeing him bet I hate him before evening is done. Went to see Conrad Nagel and Lou Cody in “So this is Marriage.“ Bible picture was pretty but story and theme was bunk. Saw no one I knew.”; “Jan 29 1925. Got up and wrote a letter to Tex! Hope he appreciates it but he won’t. Received no letters from La Fayette yet so guess he is still ok. Harvey Kendall is going to write me if he takes sick so is Claude. Had a miserable evening last night. I’m growing to hate Feister as I hate them all around here. He can’t help it or know it I think . I wouldn't let him near me. He makes me shriek Ugh! If he knew!”; “Feb5 1925. Tex gets out of Quarantine Oh ! Tex got out Wed am at 10’o clock. He did call me and came over just as I hoped. We danced awhile and acted crazy then shut the door and talked. He said people didn't fall in love by seeing so much of each other but by being separated awhile. He said he realized he loved me when i was gone Skeetz was here with Lou and he hardly knew what to make of us I'll bet Tex was so mean and teased me all evening. We had a peach of a time. I asked him to out.”; “June 71925. “Nat” didn't leave till 3 am it was just light as day. He doesn't trust or love me now. But maybe he will get over it. It made me feel badly but I am not worrying it was wrong but - We went to the mixer for a little while Sat night it was an Alumni mixer big crowd but didn't know many people. Nat came over and took me to the Fauter- for dinner all showed up in full style and it sure was good. Came home and tried to make up with him but he wouldn't get over it till I got mad!”; “July 131925. Blue Monday ! I feel depressed lost as if I had forgotten something I can’t figure out the cause. Nat is better but is still on crutches till Wed or Thursday He is going to make me write him an invitation before he will come to see me ! Sensitive nature again ! I like him for it I mailed him a letter today and am going to write tonight again One day! M came and told me lots of News!!!”; “Aug 261925. There is something wrong with me this week I feel entirely different towards Nat. His letters don’t even interest me Oh diary am I wicked or so terribly different from other girls in that I can’t like one man alone It seems there must be two before I’m happy. When I get a letter from Nat I am looking for one from Tex. I almost get mad at Nat. I have been writing him short letters because I can’t think of a thing to say.” Historical Notes: This was the age of the “Flapper”. Flappers were a generation of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts bobbed their hair listened to jazz and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup drinking treating sex in a casual manner smoking driving automobiles and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms. Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the Roaring Twenties the social political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe. The flapper stands as one of the most enduring images of youth and new women in the twentieth century and is viewed by Americans as something of a cultural heroine nowadays. However back in the 1920s many Americans regarded flappers as threatening to conventional society representing a new moral order. Although most of them were the daughters of the middle class they flouted middle-class values. They shrugged off their chaperones danced suggestively and openly flirted with boys.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MARGARET ELLIOTT PURDUE UNIVERSITY INDIANA FLAPPER NEW WOMAN FEMINISM 1920s WOMANHOOD FLOUTING SOCIAL NORMS ROARING TWENTIES GILDED AGE NEW ROLE OF WOMEN NEW BEHAVIOR FEMININE MYSTIQUE FEMININE SEXUALITY SORORITY LIFE ALPHA CHI OMEGA WOMEN’S STUDIES CASUAL SEX AMERICA IN THE 1920s POST WORLD WAR 1 ERA INTERWAR PERIOD IMAGES OF YOUTH WOMEN DATING FREELy LIBERATED WOMAN AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D’ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown‎

On offer is a pair of diaries kept by the granddaughter of two Knox County Ohio pioneers who lived her entire life in Jackson Township. The author is Margaret Melick Hall 1839-1911. She was born to parents William Melick 1806-1878 and Sarah Beatty 1808-1888. Margaret’s grandparents were David Melick 1784-1867 and Hannah Hankins 1789-1853 who were the “second settlers” in Jackson Township Knox County Ohio arriving there in 1810. Margaret married Allison G. Hall 1835-1912 a farmer on March 9 1865. Margaret married Allison after the death of his first wife Harriet 1842-1861 who was Margaret’s younger sister. Together Margaret and Allison had five children: Eldora Ella 1868–1956 Major Grant 1873–1943 Addie 1878–1963 Eliza 1880–1966 and Earl 1884–1887. Margaret keeps her first diary at age 58 writing daily and filling the book from cover to cover from Jan 1-Sept 15 1897. She begins her second diary at age 71. It covers May 21 1910-April 14 1911. Margaret keeps the diary herself until March 24 1911. She died on March 25 at 4: 00 am and her diary was immediately continued by one of her daughters with the first entry by her daughter written the very night of her death. Margaret's writing focuses on the daily happenings in Jackson mostly as they relate to her husband and children. She touches on her own work as a farm wife her church and social commitments local gossip and news she seems to record the deaths of everyone in town! and her husband’s farming. As a member of the Melick family Margaret has close ties to Jackson’s early history and she frequently discusses her interactions with other Melicks. Some excerpts give a sense of her writing: “This is another cold day…we washed. Ally and Bill husk corn in the barn. Bill went to town and got coal oil. Charley Darings had a baby berried sic” Jan 27 1897. “.Mages was here Eva was making her black dress. Warden come over him and Mage put a new floor over the well and fixed the pump. Rol Hall was here to get money to hire Sims to preach next year. Mavis was here to rent corn ground. I churned. Lide got dinner” Jan 9 1911. “This was a nice day it was cold 8 above zero. Addie come up home this morning went back. Lids…painted some here to day written by Margaret on March 24 1911 the entry is then continued by one of her daughters after her death at 4am on March 25th.Dear Ma died to-night I don’t see how we can…went down to to Mavis the doctor come…Dale…and Mavises come”. The remainder of the pages are filled by Margaret’s daughter. Here is her entry from just after Margaret died: “.Rick Allen Jose Blue Leander M Mrs. Byne Wardies and Toms Rubes Mack Addy and Frank was here in the PM. Dave Blystone Sarah and Baeck Sally and Grace Elsie Allen went to Utica after Ell and Mages. At midnight Jim Melicks Leases Glenn Blues Elie Allen was here” March 25 1911. The diaries are both softcover composition books. They measure approx 8x7 inches and 8x10 inches respectively. The 1897 diary is in good condition save for expected age toning bends and minor tears. It contains 74 pages and is 100% complete. The 1910-11 diary is in fair condition with some small rips to the cover and some tiny loss to the edges of about half of the book approx 1mm loss which does not impact readability. Unfortunately it appears an insect has gotten to some of the pages. The insect damage impacts entries from Jan 20 1911 until the end of the diary. Varying small holesinterfere with some minimal content from Jan 31 1911 through the end of the diary. Pages 61-69 are impacted most with approximately 6 words on each page being unreadable. Context is not impacted. Please request photos from seller if this is of concern. The diary contains 72 pages and is 100% complete. Side note: on one page in the 1910 diary it seems a previous owner of the diary was using it for genealogy research as they have underlined some names in blue pen and noted some dates in blue pen above Margaret’s writing. This does not interfere with content. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author . paperback‎

‎MARGARET MATILDA HARDIE, [MRS ROBERT ALEXANDER HARDIE]‎

‎1925 ORIGINAL UNCOMMON EAST TO WEST MANUSCRIPT TRAVEL DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A NOTED METHODIST MISSIONARY'S WIFE ON A TRIP BACK HOME TO AMERICA WHERE THE WORK OF CHRISTIAN OUTREACH CONTINUES‎

‎SEOUL KOREA TO NEW YORK CITY. Very Good. 1925. On offer is a fascinating original 1925 - 1926 manuscript travel diary handwritten by Ontario Canada born Margaret Matilda Hardie nee Kelley 1863 - 1946 wife of Robert Alexander Hardie also born in Ontario 1865 - 1946 a renowned Southern Methodist medical missionary to Seoul Korea in the early 20th Century. The Hardie's contribution to Korea was noted in the book 'The Role of Robert Alexander Hardie in the Korean Great Revival and the Subsequent Development of Korean Protestant Christianity' by Chil-Sung Kim. Uniquely this travel diary dated December 23 1925 to June 11 1926 concerns the Hardie's 4 month furlough trip back to the USA from Korea via the western route through the Middle East and Europe and then some time in the USA. The wonderment of diaries written by the wives of important men is that the diary is in fact about Robert as much as Margaret. Historians and researchers of Christian outreach in Korea will find this book a dual treasure: an East to West travel diary and six weeks of the Hardie's work in the USA. In fact no sooner do they return than they meet at the Korea Club and after a brief rest Robert heads for Memphis on ministry work. The opening entry begins "We left Seoul on Dec. 23rd. A large crowd was at the station to see us off." The diary goes on to relate the Hardie's voyage to Hiroshima Japan and the train ride to Kobe where they board the SS Macedonia bound for Shanghai China. From there it's on to Singapore the Bay of Bengal Colombo in Ceylon Sri Lanka Aden the coast of Africa and the Red Sea the Suez Canal Port Said Egypt Jerusalem and Bethlehem in the Holy Land present-day Israel Athens Greece Naples Rome Pisa Florence Italy Paris France London England Edinburgh and Glasgow Scotland Belfast and Dublin Ireland and then back to London for the Atlantic Ocean crossing to New York where they arrive on April 28 1926 after a journey of just over four months. The remainder of the diary concerns the Hardies' travels and doings in the USA. The 6.25" x 4" diary book itself is of Japanese manufacture and comes in a slip sleeve. ‎MARGARET RUTH POMEROY HAMLIN‎

‎1903 - 1904 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT TWO-YEAR DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A NOTED SMITH COLLEGE GRADUATE AND UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS FACULTY MEMBER WHO WILL ONE DAY BE HONORED WITH A BUILDING BUILT IN HER NAME‎

‎NORTHAMPTON MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1903. On offer is an interesting original 1903 - 1904 manuscript diary handwritten by Margaret Ruth Pomeroy Hamlin a student at Smith College in Northampton MA and later an Agricultural Counsellor for Women in Stockbridge from 1918-1934 and the first Placement Officer for Women from 1934-1948. She was originally accepted to the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1914. Her success and renown are evident by the honor bestowed her having The Margaret Hamlin House also known as Hamlin Hall a dormitory in Amherst MA named for her. It is part of the Northeast Residential Area at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The building is designed in the Georgian architecture style and is covered with brick. One online source provides: "The new two-year course included six months of on-the-job field training. To supervise the work of the men and women engaged in this training two staff members were required. On January 1 19I8 Miss Margaret P. Hamlin a Smith College graduate who had in Amherst developed a hobby of farming was appointed as one of these members with the title of "agricultural counsellor for women." Miss Hamlin developed this position until it encompassed the full activities of a Women's Placement Office. For thirty years she performed her duties most successfully. She took a great many trips some under arduous conditions to locate and evaluate positions in which students might be placed. In an area extending from Germantown Pennsylvania to Northern New Hampshire and Maine she found jobs for women in greenhouses and flower shops vegetable gardens and dairy farms. One of the most interesting examples of this placement work involved a large dairy farm on an estate near New York City which was run by two women one a professor of geology at Columbia University Ida Helen Ogilvie; see: Bedford Camp the first Woman's Land Army unit in USA . On this farm Miss Hamlin placed a number of young women who had studied animal husbandry at M.A.C. Two of these students later became farm managers on the estate." The 5 x 7¾ inches book has about 180 pages of which about 133 have entries. The spine is somewhat worn rubbed creased. Hinges cracked. Internally very good/near fine; clean and tight. Paper is slightly age toned. There is a brief summary of before and after the raid including a prelude to the four week trip in Lowestoft from Cambridge to meet her family includes booking pier tickets in Lowestoft and a short piece about the British Naval occupation on the pier "looking through binoculars" and signalling with flags" etc. five pages. I said it must be a Zeppelin." "We saw great lights ascending and descending. I jumped out of bed." "Then came a crash - a teaming grinding thud - another another the last being the loudest followed by the sound of falling bricks and glass it sounded though it was only next door." "Then we heard the whirr of the engines - terribly loud indeed." "Took pier tickets. Pier given over to Navy - they occupied the whole pavilion - some sailors always on guard at entrance. Also up aloft looking out to sea with a telescope signalling with flags. Naval officers look much nicer than army officers". ‎Margaret Shepherd Hutton Kemp‎

‎1910-1924 Diaries of the Wife of a Lanman & Kemp Druggist Living an Upper Class Life in NYC As a Manhattan Kemp‎

‎Manhattan New York Nyc New York City Europe Abroad England Spain. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer are two diaries of a highly affluent American woman who was involved in the operations of Lanman & Kemp the high profile Manhattan drug company. The diaries were kept by Margaret Shepherd Hutton Kemp 1863-1944. Margaret married George William Kemp 1860-1912 in 1889. They had one daughter Margaret Peggy 1890-1940. The Kemps were Irish immigrants to New York and quickly became a highly affluent family. They were the Kemps of the Lanman & Kemp drug dynasty which is currently best known for selling “Florida Water”. CONTACT BUYER FOR FULL BIO NOTES ON THE KEMPS AND OUR DIARIST. WORD LIMITS ON THIS SITE. Importantly our diarist Margaret was involved in the family business running Lanman & Kemp as indicated by legal records in which she is a defendant on behalf of the company. The diaries themselves are both 5-year diaries that cover the years 1910-1914 and 1920-1924. The first was begun when Margaret was 47 years old. She writes almost every single day and her life is luxurious to say the least. For example In April of 1911 she writes daily of her extended trip to Europe visiting places in Spain such as Madrid and the Alhambra Palace France and England with her husband and daughter. She travels by ship to Europe again in the spring of 1913. The rest of the time the focus is on her daily life in NYC. While each entry is only a couple of lines she is very honest with her diary and one comes to know her. Some excerpts: “.In afternoon Peggy Bidy and I walked to Bloomingdales and back…I went to late concert” Apr 18 1910. "Wednesday Fine out for last time in little car. Went to Dr. Cragins. Peggy went to Biddy at Passaic" June 15 1910. “…Damp. Report that Titanic had sunk Monday at 2: 20 AM…” Apr 16 1912. “Friday. Fine. Cold. Went to Miss Richard’s Met KOR. Home with George all aft. He very weak. Dr. Thomas here. Peggy at Ritz dance” Dec 20 1912. “Heavy rain. Geo died at ten minutes of one. Saw lots of people” Dec 24 1912. “Monday. Heavy rain all day. Fixing George’s room. Depressed…” Dec 30 1912. “Friday. Fine cooler. Started for Trossachs at 9: 30 in carriage. Sailed down Loch Katrine and back. Had tea at Callandar. Motored to Bridge of Allan” July 4 1913. “Tuesday. Fine cold. Down shopping lunched with Jim and Peggy. Ed here in aft” Dec 22 1914. By the time Margaret begins her second diary in 1920 she is married to Edward Charles Mears Kemp. Peggy is still unmarried she marries later in 1928 at age 37. She references her affluent lifestyle including shopping at Harrods in London June 1 1921 ordering evening coat and day coat Aug 30 1921 and Tea at the Ritz Oct 16 1924 Excerpts from the second diary follow: “Fine. Warmer. Peggy and Ed playing golf. I walked out but missed them. Sey took me for a drive. Ed rode. Merrie’s at night” Oct 15 1921. “Monday. Rain. Ed went to meet Mrs. Ward. I down at League Lecture. Home in aft. Opera at night first night” Nov 14 1921. “Wednesday. Showers. Went to Harrods alone. Ed had church in room. Had fire. Peg out with Isabelle Baggallays at Eunice and Heath” Sept 19 1923. “Dine out with Peggy in morning. Home reading. Van Braam here at sea. Heard chimes. May fired” Dec 31 1924. This diary is a fantastic look inside a highly successful Manhattan family giving readers a sense of the lifestyle enjoyed by a Kemp wife in middle age and painting a stark contrast to the lifestyle of those of lesser means in New York at the time. Both diaries have substantial notes including names and addresses of those in Margaret’s life as well as financial documentation. The diaries both measure 5.75 x 4.5 inches. Both of their spines are coming loose but they are otherwise in good condition. Both are 90% complete. Overall Good. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author . hardcover‎

‎1928-1930 Diaries of the Dedicated Mother and Wife of a Shoe Trimmer Making the Most of Life in Pennsylvania During the Great Depression‎

‎Lititz Pennsylvania. Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer are three diaries following three consecutive years in the life of young Pennsylvania wife and mother Margie K. Nelson Keller 1896-1987. Born in Lancaster County Margie married William Grumbine Keller 1894-1962 in 1917. William worked in a shoe factory as a trimmer. Together they had two boys and a girl. Margie lovingly recorded all three of their full names and birthdates in the back of her 1929 diary. Keller spent her entire life in Lancaster county living mostly in Lititz. Keller’s diaries paint a very clear picture of domestic life at that time. Written while she was in her 30s her life is consumed with looking after her husband Bill and her young children. When she begins her diaries her boys Alfred and Arthur are approximately nine and seven when she begins her diaries. In 1929 she gives birth to her daughter Annette. The following excerpts will give a flavour of these lovely diaries: “I started to wash this morning then my wash machine broke. I did not finish til in the afternoon. It was nice so it dried better than I expected. Bill came home early he had something in his eye that hurt too bad” Mar 19 1928. “I worked all morning. The boys did not go along with Bill today they go to bible school every day. It is just in the morning from 8 to 11 o’clock. Mother gave us a chicken yesterday so this evening we killed it. Am having chicken corn pie tomorrow” June 15 1928. “Think of it a baby girl came to our place. Our baby was born about two o’clock Monday morning” Apr 22 1929. “I was busy all day cleaning and baked this morning. I don’t know what I would do without Arthur to help me” July 12 1929. “I did my week’s cleaning upstairs. In the afternoon I mended and made apple jelly. Its very cold a sudden change that’s why we mind it so” Sept 19 1929. “I made my pineapple jam this morning and done some mending and made 2 baby dresses over for the baby. We called on Grampa Keller and at Fredericks this evening” June 11 1930. “They had Rally Day at Sun School this after. We all went I could not stay in the whole time on account of Annette. The church was crowded. They had a special choir. We were home the rest of the day” Oct 19 1930. “I ironed til dinnertime. It rained a little today. I mended this afternoon. This evening I went to the hotel and voted the strait Republican ticket” Nov 4 1930. “Thanksgiving Day. Grandpa Kellers and Grandpa Nelson’s were here for dinner. We had two roasted ducks filling potatoes after vegetables cranberry sauce 2 kinds of pie 2 kinds cake and ice cream” Nov 27 1930. These simple diaries paint a fine picture of the day-to-day life life of a young working class mother in small town Pennsylvania. If times are hard she really doesn’t mention it. Instead what the reader sees is the slow rhythm of life as she looks after her family. She keeps a detailed record of daily and weekly expenses which give a picture of costs to support her family which only offers more insight into how a working-class family in the 20s made a go of it. From the dust jacket: "Known for her outstanding performances on the groundbreaking television series THE GOOD WIFE and ER Julianna Margulies deftly chronicles her life and her work in this deeply powerful memoir. As an apple-cheeked bubbly child Julianna was bestowed with the family nickname 'Sunshine Girl.' Shuttled back and forth between her divorced parents often on different continents she quickly learned how to be of value to her eccentric mother and her absent father. Raised in fairly unconventional ways in various homes in Paris England New York and New Hampshire Julianna found that her role among the surrounding turmoil and uncertainty was to comfort those around her seeking organization among the disorder making her way in the world as a young adult and eventually an award-winning actress. Throughout there were complicated relationships difficult choices and overwhelming rejections. But there were also the moments where fate faith and talent aligned leading to the unforgettable roles of a lifetime both professionally and personally -- moments when chaos had finally turned to calm. Filled with intimate stories and revelatory moments Sunshine Girl is at once unflinchingly honest and perceptive. It is a riveting self-portrait of a woman whose resilience in the face of turmoil will leave readers intrigued and inspired." ‎MARIA A TUTTLE‎

‎1856 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG WOMAN MATURING GROWING AND FACING THE ALL-TOO-COMMON DIFFICULTIES OF YOUTH: MEAN BOYS HURTFUL GOSSIP AND DIFFICULT FAMILY‎

‎LAKE CAZENOVIA CAZENOVIA NEW YORK NY. Good. 1856. On offer is an 1856 handwritten diary originally belonging to an 18 year old girl Maria A. Tuttle of Cazenovia near Syracuse New York The diary is a fascinating look into the life of a young girl as she matures and grows into herself and as she endures the kind of bullying and difficulties faced by so many young people still. Young Maria is plagued by boys calling her ugly and she mentions it many times throughout the diary. Other than that Maria attends church faithfully goes dancing with friends receives the occasional gentleman caller sews and darns clothing and spends much time around the Lake where she and her family live most probably Cazenovia Lake. There is a full handwritten entry for 280 out of the 365 days in 1856. At the time of the diary Maria is 18 years old. She would die only 8 years later at the young age of 26 and only two years into her marriage to a man named Edward Lowrie. After the daily entries end there is very interesting letter written. The background for the letter is unknown and it is addressed to a “Brother and Sister Blackman” who are only discussed briefly in the diary. On May 1st a day before the letter was written Maria writes that she “gave them a piece of my mind.” The diary does not say what offense the Blackman’s gave the Tuttles but in the letter it appears they attempted to slander the Tuttles and “censuring us beyond all reason.” The letter is copied at the bottom of this listing. Many many names are mentioned of the folks in the area some of which are: Maria Lefft Will Colwell Elder Howlett Edwin Hewes Nell Raleigh Mate Hunt Elder Tukes Henry Stannard Willis Mitchell Martha Morse Phillips Charlie Jackson Elinore Matie Cook McConnell Brown Reynolds Levi Tillosten Lovejoy Britton Whiting Truax Dr. Mitchell James Beckwith Jane White and more. The front cover and part of the spine has a notable spot on it from water damage and this stain carries on through the pages until about the end of April but it does not affect any of the writing. The binding is still in good condition. The pages within show little signs of wear or discoloration. Maria wrote the diary in a combination of black pen and pencil. Both have faded at parts but the writing is legible and readable throughout. The diary measures about 3” x 5”. Text: “January 1st 1856. In the forenoon I assisted in arranging the store for the festival. I went to store about two o’clock afternoon. Maria Lefft and myself attended to the grab bag. Had lots of fun. Coz Henry went to the Hall with me staid till 12. I saw Will Colwell had a long chat. Father mother and Carrie came to meeting in the evening.”; “January 18th Prof. Hyde lectured at the free church. Adda and myself attended. Coz. Henry came home with us. We walked up Lincklaen Street and back. Henry came in and we had a real time reading scrapbook.”; “February 22nd & 24th Mr. McConnell and Adda and Mr. Brown and myself went to Wheeler Tilloston in the evening to see Eliza. She was not there she was in Pitson. We went to the flats stopped to Weaver’s to dance had a very good time….I went to meeting to Universalist in the evening. McConnell came home with me. Adda had come from home in a few minutes H. D. Brown came and apologized for going home with Hellen Gilson. We all went serenading then the boys staid all the evening.”; “Friday March 7th I met Mr. Howry D. Brown at the Cazenovia House at 7 o’clock in the evening. He had been in Mr. Bannistor’s office and had a talk with him in relation to our going to Nelson Flats. We had a long talk about it. We bid farewell no more to meet on this earth.”; “April 27th Father mother Philemon and Hannah went to Caz. to meeting. I was so sick while they were gone I sent for Mrs. Colwell. She came up and give me some spearmint tea then I felt better. Louisa Colwell came to sea ma a little while towards night.”; “May 16th Father and Philemon went to Caz. Mother and myself went to Mrs. Buttons to quilting Lucinda Mrs. Whiting and Hannah Bacens were there. Martha Norse came after Hellen. Hannah B. and I rode to our house with them. They took tea then we rowed across the lake. Alfred rowed for us. I staid to Levi’s all night with H. Levi went fishing with Jerry Mentee.”; “June 22nd I staid at home all day with Hannah and Eddie and Charlie. Mother Phil Cassins went to Caz. to meeting. Will Colwell came about five o’clock and staid till after eleven. He said I was ugly. I got kinda mad at him and I guess he went home a little miffed but do not know for certain.”; “August 10th Went to Caz. to meeting. Father and mother staid to five o’clock meeting. Cassins went after them. Will came here about five. We went to the lake and sit under the elm tree. Had a good time. Will said I was ugly.”; “October 16th I finished Lucinda’s dress today. William Colwell here in the evening. Played checkers. Had a glorious time. I thinkin he said I was hateful. He said I was afraid he would tell the reason why I would not tell him something.”; “May 2nd 1856. To Brother and Sister Blackman. After long meditation and much consideration I can no longer do injustice to my own inclinations and such ingratitude to the high station you possess in the nation to extend my extreme thanks to you for your pains in reporting us. I do sincerely hope that you enjoy the happiness of a clear conscience. I will venture to say you will be richly rewarded for your trouble in going to different persons with skins of slander that never were twisted. Besides censuring us beyond all reason doubtless you are aware what persons I refer to. I dare say if we were Methodists then we should be considered perfect then of course it would be right but as we are not we do not prefer to be perfect. I thank fortune that I do not belong to the number however I do not consider your tongue any slander whatever you have my best wishes for your future welfare. May you prove an honor in whatever society you move and in whatever situation you are placed. May you go on faithful always doing your duty and continually live so that your daily walks will show that you possess what you profess. I suppose Mrs. P. feels as much relieved of her anxieties after having her patience but to such an extent and her house so disgraced as she terms it. I should think it would make her sick poor woman. I am afraid she will not survive. I fear her situation is very alarming however she has my most tender sympathy. I close hoping you will al prosper and much happiness will be your lot. And when time with you shall be no more may you tread the heavenly shore and reign in constant bliss. Maria A. Tuttle.” OVERALL: G; Manuscript; 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MARIA A.
