FRANK ?
1893 - 1920s FASCINATING ORIGINAL PAIR 2 OF MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING A SOMERVILLE MASSACHUSETTS MAN'S LIFE OVER A 43 YEAR SPAN
SOMERVILLE MASSACHUSETTS. Fair. 1893. On offer is a most unusual and interesting pair of journals. They date from 1893 and 1896 respectively. They measure 8 inches by 4 1/4 inches and contain 184 pages. The binding of one journal is quite worn and the 2nd is almost detached. Many of the pages in the first journal are loose but all are accounted for. The writing is quite legible. The author's name is Frank. From context we know that he was born in 1873. He lives in Somerville MA. The journals are interesting as they are essentially snap shots of his life taken at different times between 1893 and 1926. The first covers that entire period. The 2nd volume has several entries dated Dec 27 and 31 1899 and Jan 1st 1900 and Mar 14th 1900. The first volume is the most detailed. It begins with him taking a train trip west to visit the Chicago World Fair. He describes his journey west in some cases with simple pencil sketches accompanying his notes. "Grazing country hop growing flock of sheep looking for their lake . Lake Ontario 10:20 Chicago World Fair. After a fine night sleep I am about to go to breakfast will communicate further during the day being the first real day at the Fair" June 6 1893. "Figures in Chocolate solid weight of Venus de Milo" 14:50 Sousa Band electrical illumination Torches on Building" He states on June 7th that he is finished with the Fair. But subsequent entries showed that he stayed a few extra days. He notes the places that he stops on his return trip as well such as Hamilton ON and Buffalo NY He doesn't actually state when he arrives home - the entries simply cease. The next entries are in 1896: "After three years it is very interesting to look over the foregoing . my notes strike me as childish and not noteworthy" Dec 10 1896. During this section of his journal he bemoans his being unemployed and describes his pain at the death of his father. It is a very difficult time for him personally and the reader can feel his sense of loss and depression. He reflects on the time passed: "We are on the eve of moving our household back to Somerville back to the homestead. Our funds have sunken low - some paintings are on the market and furniture has been sold and I - the only son and who should be the mainstay of the family - I am out of work!" The next entries skip ahead three years. "This now nearly three years since I have seen this book and many changes have taken place in that time. They are changes which have influenced my entire life and to judge from the present outlook the influence has been the reverse to what it should be Sept 30 1899. He does finally find work: "In six days I shall start for the West. I go for the Contractors Plant Co. And to sell the Portable Gravity Concrete Mixer." Dec 20 1899 He is optimistic although he does lament not having someone in his life to love. He makes no more entries for 5 years. "Not quite 5 years since I've wrote here. Great have been the changes! . I have a daughter now five weeks old and as happy a Godsend as one could wish! . All happy and contented. My affairs are in good shape and full of better promise." Aug 23 1904 He notes that he now owns his own home and his own belongings. He writes optimistically of the future. The next entry is 16 years later. He notes that he found the journal when he was unpacking boxes after a move. There has been illness and he has been in the hospital while his son was bed-ridden with a serious kidney ailment. ". We shall pull him through with God's help" Mar 30 1920. Six years later he comes back to the journal. He notes that his son recovered and is quite healthy. However his wife suffers from unexplained nerve pain. He talks about being fortunate: ". We are fortunate in the worlds goods because we have more than we need and some of the luxury is ours. We have a Cape Cod house which we all enjoy. ." May 31 1926. He takes real pleasure in his son and daughter and sees the future with optimism. His last entry is in October 1926. He expresses concern for their economic future: "A new note enters into our lives. The matter of business causes worry as it slips down and down . I should like ten years more of full earning power. ." Oct 15 1926. Three years later at age 56 he along with millions of Americans will be plunged into the depths of the Great Depression. For a historian taking a long view this is a fascinating look into the mind of a young man as he grows and grapples with the challenges of building a life for himself. He came of age during the Panic of 1896 when the economy crashed taking with it hundreds of banks and thousands of businesses. He struggles through this crisis and builds a successful life. One wonders how he fared in the later years of his life.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF UNITED STATES MASSACHUSETTS MIDDLESEX COUNTY 19TH CENTURY EARLY 20TH CENTURY 1890S 1900S 1920S ROARING TWENTIES CHICAGO PROGRESSIVE ERA THE PANIC OF 1893; CHICAGO WORLD FAIR; WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION TRAIN TRIPS IN 1890S SOMERVILLE MA; THE GREAT DEPRESSION AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

FRANK BEARD JR
1877 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A 14 YEAR OLD NEW YORK BOY AND DEDICATED ERUDITE AND ROMANTIC DIARIST
HALLS CORNERS NEW YORK NY. Good. 1877. On offer is a super look at the life and times of a teenage boy in 1877 Ontario County New York. This 6" x 3" diary for the year 1877 is written by Frank Beard Jr. of Halls Corners Ontario County New York. Frank turns 15 during the writing of the diary and lives with his mother father and younger brother Charlie on a farm. Uniquely for a boy Frank is a tireless erudite and somewhat romantic diarist and he faithfully has an entry for every day from Jan 1st when he bids "good bye to the Centennial Year until June 17th. Many of the remaining pages are filled with figures for purchases and work performed and lists of the names of "witnesses". Frank wrote of his daily activities work on the farm his school trips to the surrounding towns - Geneva Penn Yan Canandaigua - where he and his parents sell produce etc. He makes meticulous notes on what was paid for the produce and what he spent on clothing food etc on these trips. Both he and his brother perform chores 7 days a week as well as plowing seeding milking tapping trees and making syrup etc. He travels to Halls Corners to the Post Office for his copy of "The Youth's Companion" which he reads diligently. He also writes and very sadly sometimes of his neighbors and of the horrible toll of small pox taking their lives as well as of his own vaccination. He notes one family losing 6 members to smallpox. He mentions Hayes becoming President. Although his grammar is not the best he appears to have been an intelligent and hard-working young man. A few of his entries: Jan 1- "Good bye to the Centennial Year. The new year has come. The centennial year has gone and the new century begins. I feel a little better today. There has been 6 died with the small pox. Jan 3 - "I have had a very sore arm from vaccinating. It is getting better now. Staid home all day. I done the chores this morning. Pa and I drawed the buggy in the barn. There is another one of the B.girls died of the small pox. There is 5 in that family died". Mar 4 - " I staid at home most all day. We done the chores this morning. It froze up today. It is quite cold. This is the 4 of March the day they inaugurated the President - Grant is no longer President. George Rolf is very sick. Several names of neighbors and relatives are mentioned throughout. The leather cover of the diary is damaged but the inside pages are in good condition. It takes some getting used to Frank's poor hyphenating and some misspelled words but his writing is legible. This is a very interesting look at rural life in the 1800's. Overall Good.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA ARCHIVE NEW YORK DIARY DIARIES ECONOMICS NEW YORK POST CIVIL WAR ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT GENEALOGY SMALLPOX EPIDEMICS MEDICAL POX . hardcover

These diaries belonged to Frank S. Cummings who lived most of his life in California. Cummings was born July 24th 1894. The 1910 and 1911 diaries were written when he was in high school - ages 16 and 17. It is full of the day-to-day experiences of a high school-aged boy: "School again. Aud. Call in 5th period. Prof Galey talks to boys. But tickets at . Finish riding 300 miles on my bicycle" Apr 28 1910; "Lecture on Liquid Air in Aud. the 4th period. After lesson walk to and hunt for music book. Cannot find it. Finish studying early. June 13 1910; "Rain. Aud call 4th period. Man talks on Lincoln. Excused for rest of the day. . No lesson." Feb 13 1911; "Spring vacation this week. Work on wheel. Take bath. Leave 3:00 for Mrs. Bierlich's. Home early. Go to Ms. Aston's after supper. Home 10:35." Apr 10 1911. While there are references to his mother and aunts and uncles there is no reference to his father or to siblings. He graduates in 1912 and enrolls in the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken NJ. Stevens is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States and was the first college in America solely dedicated to mechanical engineering and the diary for 1916 covers some his experiences there as a student. "Computation exercise in Elect. Labs. Study some with Boards 4:15 home go to show "Mary Page" Apr 6 1916; "Commencement 10:30 Go over early. Assemble in "P Lab" . go up to Castle stay there all afternoon ." Jun 6 1916. For some entries context suggests that while in College he enrolled in the U.S. armed forces reserves specifically the U.S. Naval Reserve Force: "Lecture by General Wood on 'Preparedness' 12:00 - 1:00. 2:03 home. Go down town. Concert at Women's Club East Orange. Met . Home 12:00." Feb 16 1916; "Lecture by Capt. Steward 5th Infantry on Organization of the Army ." Feb 23 1916. In Sept 1916 he returned to Stevens to both study as well as to teach as an instructor in the Electrical Department. In 1918 it is clear that he has enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve Force and has been commissioned an Ensign. Entries on what are obviously pages from a military note book indicate that he was engaged in recruiting activities: "FROM: F.S.C. Ensign USNRF TO: Lieutenant Com. F.L. Pryor SUBJECT: Report 1. The enrollment in the naval sections of the S.A.T.C. at both the Univ of Calif and Stanford was less than that desired Instead of a unit of 500 at U of C there were only about 350 enrolled on Oct 4; of these only about 100 were engineers instead of 300. At Stanford out of a desired unit of 100 engineers there were enrolled about 85 of which about 50 were engineers. ." Oct 8 1918; "Got promotion to Lieutenant j.g. ." Jan. 16 1919. On Apr 19th 1919 he received orders to report to the USS DeKalb in Newport News. USS DeKalb was a converted German navy commerce raider that had been interned by US Customs for overstaying her time in a neutral port. When the United States entered the war she was seized and turned over to the US Navy. On Apr 28th he sailed with her to France where she picked up troops to return home from the war. They returned to the United States on May 23rd. He was released from active service May 26th 1919. He immediately returned to California and began to look for work. He was successful and began working July 9th at the rate of 40¢ / hour. His diaries for the following years detail his work at various firms in the electro-mechanical field. There are many references to social activities and people he shares time with. Most diaries contain extensive lists of expenses and in the war years additional notes of his recruiting efforts. Although there is no other biographical information on Cummings the diaries paint a very good picture of his life over this 19 year period. Indeed a social historian would see they could serve as a wider picture of daily life in these early years of the 20th century. An economic researcher or an economist would appreciate the wealth of detail in his extensive records of daily expenses on a wide range of items over this near-two decade period of time; Manuscript; 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; UNITED STATES; CALIFORNIA; FRANK S.
