Tight pristine first edition of this self-published study -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to the inside front wrapper is an Autograph Letter Signed from Truett 1p 5½" X 8½" Arlington VA 28 February 1967. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On his nifty imprinted letterhead Truett thanks Gates for some New York Civil War Round Table programs and for having him as a guest. "Your meeting was wonderful and you gave us such a nice reception. Also we did enjoy our visit to the Metropolitan Life. They just did everything possible to make our visit one that we will remember for a long time. I was in the Ford's Theatre yesterday and they are really making headway. It is certainly good to see the progress. It does look like they will have it complete one of these days." Attractively penned in blue ballpoint. Laid in is the small 4pp pristine program announcing Truett's appearance at the 156th meeting of this Round Table on 14 February 1967 and his lecture title "Tragedy at Ford's Theatre". Nice copy of the elaborate prospectus for Ida M. Tarbell's "The Life of Abraham Lincoln: Drawn from original sources and containing many Speeches Letters and Telegrams hitherto unpublished" first published in 1900 and reissued by Lincoln History Society in four volumes in1902. Definitely uncommon. Laid in is an 8" X 4" pale blue printed order form for this set $10 for "English Ribbed Cloth" $14 for "Three-Quarter Leather" and also a 4 3/4" X 7 3/4" Typed Letter Signed from this company's registrar W.R. Caldwell bearing his rubberstamped signature 1 April 1903. Addressed to E.P. Farr. Very good. Blue-ink mimeographed sales pitch letter for this set. Apparently this publisher reprinted this prospectus each time they reprinted this set others bear the date 1903 1907 1908 and 1909 on the facsimile of the Tarbell title page but this 1902 is the earliest and represents the year the LHS first published their edition. Edward George Ryan 1810-80 was a well-known lawyer judge and politician of Madison Wisconsin while Woodside was an obscure government official who served as clerk of the House Committee of Claims. Carl Tolpo 1901-76 was a noted sculptor and painter best remembered for his busts of Lincoln. This copy has been extra-illustrated: Often appearing in these pages are thanks to Paul J. Sedgwick chairman of the District of Columbia Civil War Centennial Commission and Paul H. Gantt president of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia and a letter from each has been tipped to the inner flyleaves. Wirth Director National Park Service" -- and tipped to facing page is a heavy stock 5" X 3" pre-printed "Civil War Round Table" reservation card which Wirth has signed large and bold in blue ballpoint adding he cannot attend the June 3 1967 meeting in question and adds "Greatly regret but will be unable to attend." Wirth 1899-1993 headed the National Park Service from 1951 to 1964 and was a noted conservationist and landscape architect. The title page also notes "And the Technical Supervision of Randle B. Truett Chief Historian National Capital Region" -- and tipped opposite the half-title page is an Autograph Letter Signed from Truett 1p 5½" X 8½" Arlington VA 1962 May 14. Salesman's subscription copy of this campaign biography with brief samples from quite a few chapters included. Front pastedown bears sample book spines showing the full calf and the moroccan bindings each pristine and well giltstamped. At the close are 16 pages vertically lined blank pages for purchasers to leave "Name" "Residence" and "Binding" -- one page is full with nine purchasers another shows four and a third shows three. Interestingly the frontispiece steel-engraved portrait depicts not Harrison or Morton but preacher Henry Ward Beecher with a statemment printed in red at top acknowledging this and noting that this is "being used simply as SAMPLE." A printed slip tipped in among the front flyleaves notes that "The first eighteen pages only of the Life of General Harrison contained in this Prospectus are from the pen of the author of 'Ben Hur.' The remainder have been prepared merely for the use of Agents in order to show the size of page style of type and general appearance of the forthcoming volume." Hanley 1865-1959 was an Illinois state legislator active in Democratic politics and chairman of the 1930 Democratic State Convention in 1930 and Stevenson 1900-65 was of course the Illinois governor who at this time was being spoken of as the next Democratic presidential candidate -- which happened the following year and again in 1956 though he lost both times to Dwight D. Eisenhower. An interesting association copy for Stevenson's grandfather Adlai E. An attractive and clean-edged first edition of this attack on the Democratic eighth U.S. president undated but certainly published in 1848. After losing his bid for reelection to Whig candidate William Henry Harrison in 1840 Van Buren's opposition to Texas annexation in 1844 lost him the vote of pro-slavery Democrats and he failed to get the nomination and in 1848 the Free Soil Party gave him the nomination. Though his views had become more anti-slavery over the years this no-holds-barred criticism calls him "the great nucleus of the South and the greatest enemy of the free institutions of the North" -- among many less tactful labels. Quite a few of his letters are excerpted to show his support of slavery. This pro-Whig piece then warns supporters against being tempted to support Van Buren and stresses the advantages of Zachary Taylor "the honest man the true patriot the frank intelligent humane soldier and the man of the People" over Democratic candidate Lewis Cass "aggressive wars the resistance of the popular will the constant exercise of the veto the one man power the extension of slavery". Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. Various paginations most issues ca. 25-42pp. Frontispieces excepting May 1953 issue occasional illustrations. Good plus to near fine. Most issues to very good to near fine with only the second issue good plus wrappers bit age toned and discolored with wrinkling throughout. Fine grouping of 12 issues accompanied by a printed letter from president Donald S. Carmichael that accompanies the first issue and introduces it and also a few subscription renewal notices. Seven issues are still in their original mailing envelopes. Also present are two Typed Notes Signed and four Autograph Notes Signed from Valentine each on buff heavy stock 5½" X 3½" penny postal cards the first two TNsS chronologically from Decatur IL and dated 26 June and 7 July 1947 the second two ANsS from Glendale CA and dated 26 June 1948 and 7 January 1949 the last two ANsS being picture postcards from New York NY and London England and dated 16 July 1949 and 7 June 1950. All addressed to Elmer R. Underwood. Very good. Friendly FDR chitchat about the Association membership "We have had 38 new members ! since The FDR Collector came out" new FDR books etc. The New York picture postcard features a portrait of FDR and the London picture postcard depicts the President Roosevelt Memorial in London's Grosvenor Square. Valentine was for a time Ralph G. Newman's business partner at the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop that Newman founded and later sold books and even published a Stephen Crane bibliography after relocating to Glendale California. Underwood 1896-1982 was a noted Chicago Civil War collector and one of the handful of devotees along with Abraham Lincoln Book Shop founder Ralph G. Newman who founded the Chicago Civil War Round Table in 1942 -- the first of what would eventually become hundreds of similar Civil War Round Tables around the country. How long this publication continued publishing is surprisingly unclear -- references may be found to the presence of 1955 issues in institutional collections but nothing later than that -- suggesting that the May 1955 issue here may well be the final issue. A fine and scarce grouping in any case with accompanying autograph material from its one and only editor. Issues of this journal are rather uncommon and lengths of any run are rarely seen. This fine gathering is also accompanied by seven issues of Valentine's FDR for sale lists numbers 3 through 9 each titled "Books Pamphlets Autographs and Allied Material Relating to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and His Times" each 4to and several pages in length generally very good. ALSO present are two identically-titled lists ! from Valentine's one-time business partner Ralph G. Newman of the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop probably preceding Valentine's lists. Below this prolific humorist and columnist Cobb 1876-1944 also signs and inscribes also in purple ink: "Dear Ray -- / I unqualifiedly endorse / Pages VIII to XI inclusive of / these contents. You accept / the rest on your own re- / sponsibility -- / Irvin S. Cobb." "Ray" was likely Ray D. Smith a noted Civil War scholar and collector from Illinois. Copies of "Over My Left Shoulder" signed by Davis aren't terribly uncommon but copies also signed by Cobb are rarely seen. A great pair of tongue-in-cheek signed inscriptions. D. I do not believe that you did send a copy of the Hancock Brady ad. We would like to have a copy of it." Signed simply "Harry" in blue ink.
