‎Boston New Bedford Roxbury MASS. Very Good. 1876. On offer is the 1876 handwritten manuscript diary of 'Jas William E Spooner' as evidenced by his writing on the front endpaper. This book will be of particular interest to historians of the Boston/New Bedford where Mr. Spooner resided and presidential history. The diary begins October 1876 through April 1879. While he does write of personal and business matters the political history in the book are from Mr. Spooner's many entries regarding the contested presidential election of 1876 between Samuel Tilden and Rutherford Hayes. Here are some brief highlights: October 24 entry describes the Grant torch light procession of the Republicans through Boston. October 27th entry describes the "Carpet baggers and the horribles which looked very comical.Flag Raising on Ruggles St Democrats" October 30th describes the Democratic torchlight Procession down through Faneuil Hall. November 3rd's lengthy entry describes the author's travels and the election results - "one night now after the political campaign is over it is hard to determine who shall be the President there being trouble is a few of the southern states fraud claimed by both the Republican and Decmorat Partys. Grant had sent troops south and men of both partys have gone down to have a fair count of the voted but not terms of settlement have been arrived at yet the men that are running for President are Samuel Tilden Governor of New York and Ruther B Hayes Governor and Ohio and Wheeler Vice President. Both Republicans Tilden and Hendrick are elected according as the vote stands separate from a few of the southern states whether war will terminate this election remains to be found and both partys claim the victory today" Dec 11 entry "The political question remains still unsettled both candidates are claimed to have been elected" Other entries include commentary on the weather travels throughout the Boston area and down to Fairhaven / New Bedford; some boats in the New Bedford area are mentioned as is the Howland name. Mr. Spooner also uses the book to copy a letter he has written to his friends. Cash and financial details are noted. 8vo. ‎1918 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN INJURED BRITISH OFFICER NOW IN COMMAND OF THE HOME SERVICE EMPLOYMENT CORPS‎

‎BETTISFIELD PARK CAMP SHROPSHIRE ENGLAND. Very Good. 1918. On offer is an excellent well filled original 1918 World War I manuscript diary handwritten by British Army Officer C.H. McCallum while not specified directly in the book other related items in the original archive clearly identify the author who we learn from his service record in the diary spent the whole of 1918 in Britain where he was in command of the 568th HSE Home Service Employment Company part of the Labour Corps at Bettisfield Park Camp in Flintshire although the diarist himself records Bettisfield as being in Shropshire. We also learn that he was on active service in France and Belgium during 1916 and 1917 including a period with the Border Regiment on the Somme. McCallum writes of having been invalided back from France and as was often the case with injured men he was seconded to the HSE as a result of injuries sustained while on active service. We note a particularly interesting historic anomaly being that a number of the entries in the diary refer to German prisoners of war on camp and the diary does sometimes read as though it was the diarist's responsibility to manage these men. Thusly we believe the HSE Company was used to provide guards at Bettisfield. This would be an interesting fact given most research sources describe Bettisfield Park as a base for the No 2 Reserve Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery. We cannot find any historical record of prisoners of war at Bettisfield. McCallum does a super job as a diarist writing an entry for every day of the year many quite detailed and lengthy detailing day-to-day life in the camp and there are plenty of insights into the life of a home-based officer including references to comings and goings among his fellow officers courts martial logistical matters and so on all well mixed with the minutiae of his private life: particularly his wife Nancy and a new baby who live at Byfield in Northamptonshire. He follows military events closely in the press and frequently makes observations about the progress of the war. Of course this being 1918 the diary does include Armistice Day which he marks with a low key entry one that was perhaps characteristic of serving soldiers. He is pleased the war is over but seems quite low key perhaps fatigued with the War: 'A Great Day. Mons occupied by the British at dawn. Armistice signed 5 a.m. Fighting ceased at 11 a.m. The bells rang in the evening and people put out flags. Went into WIH's and drank a bottle of beer!' Overall VG.We note that we also have McCallum's 1929 India Service diary which he wrote as he assumed command of the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry. ‎PHILADELPHIA PENNSYLVANIA PA. Very Good. 1932. On offer is an amazing archive of three 3 original manuscript diaries 1932 1934 and 1935 handwritten by Sidney Irving Brody future medical doctor Naval Captain flight surgeon and the first commanding officer at the Naval Hospital at Quonset Point. Sidney was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Extensive biographic notes follow the description. The first diary was written during his senior year at Northeast High School where he was an excellent student. The other two diaries were written while he was attending the University of Pennsylvania with the latter written during the author's senior year at U of P and he wrote of taking an aptitude test for a medical career and making application to medical school. He eventually graduated from the Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. This diary is a stand out for a number of reasons. On the one hand this is a truly unique study in the beginnings of a young man's adulthood with a considerable future ahead of him that will require him to perform great physical and emotional feats. The author reveals himself intimately expressing his feeling and even base desires. Researchers and historians of men's studies or gender studies of this era will be appreciative of the opportunity to see his psyche revealed even before he ever began his studies of medicine we do note however that Sidney studied anatomy and chemistry in relation to the opposite sex with gusto and successfully so it seems. It really is quite unique to read a young man so expressive in a diary. The 1932 book is quite full and there is an entry for every day. He wrote about his daily activities both school and social. He was an avid tennis player and included in this lot is a framed Tennis Team award. His father bought him a car in his senior year of high school and while attending college the author lived at home. In the summer he was a camp counselor and also traveled to NYC and Atlantic City where his family vacationed each year. Dr. Brody was very interested in all sports and wrote about meeting some baseball greats: April 13."Babe" Ruth and his wife came to school today. We gave him a cup April 19."Mickey" Cochrane came up to school today. Interviewed him. He gave a nice talk Jun 19.Got up early and went to school. The St Louis Cards were there. Met them." He had many girlfriends throughout these years and seemed to put them in two categories - those he took on formal dates and treated with the utmost respect and those that he either picked up in his car or those that would "neck": Jan 24 1932 Got up late and lounged around. Went down to the library about 4:00. After supper went over to Stan's. Took Rochelle to Beth Sholom dance. Was pretty nice. She seemed to take more interest in the other guys. I guess I'll take someone else out next time I go out. Feb 1 Arose late as usual - lounged around in the afternoon. Today was Rochelle's 17 th birthday and I had the extreme honor of taking her out. Bought her an expensive box of candy and we went out with Milt and Eleanor. Went to the State and the Golden Gate. Spent a lot of money tonight. Had a nice time. Sep 21 Drove Stan to the doctor. Then we went to Ethel Horvanti's where I saw Adelle. I then painted the fenders and lights on my car. At night I went over Cooper's where the gang was. Walked Rochelle home. Sat and talked to her. She said that she thought she was in love with me !!! Believe it or not !!!!! Dec 31 Went over to Rochelle's in the afternoon. Had it out with her. Then went to Ruth Koppenheim's. Wright took Rochelle to Harry Grossman's affair at the Ben Franklin. Kissed Rochelle for the first time in over a year. Got in at 9:30 Had a swell time. July 30 Got up at a reasonable hour. Then went to Dittenfast and played tennis with Mort. Had a nice match. After supper at Mort's we went around trying to pick up some broads. Cruised around the whole city including Woodside. Finally got two near home. Took them for a ride and got a good feel. Aug 5 Arose late and sent over to Rochelle's for about an hour with Lena. Left and drove her to get her bathing suit. After supper took family for a ride. Then got Mort and we took the Germantown girls for a ride. Got a good feel and was stopped for driving one handed. May get a summons." A couple of times the author described his sexual experience in clinical terms once adding he didn't have a very good time. He also wrote of problems with girls: "Aug 24 Up early. Was Bernice's birthday. Went over Ruth Koppenheims with Stan Rochelle and Audrey. Audrey fainted on account of Stan not loving her. At night called for Rochelle and Audrey at the Colby theater. Went up to Rochelle's apartment. Audrey tried to take iodine and commit suicide the dope because Stan didn't love her. He had to do some tall convincing to get her to believe him. Took them for a ride. Dec 25 Lounged around in the afternoon. Had the family and friends over for dinner. At night took Mimi to RI . Rochelle was was there and I had my hands full." Although the author wrote much about his experiences with girls social activities parties etc. he approached adulthood with a sense of purpose in both his education and his path towards becoming a doctor. He often wrote about someone named Martin in the diaries. Martin must have been a physician as the author occasionally wrote of going to Philadelphia General with Martin. He once observed an autopsy and wrote of assisting in a couple of very minor surgeries. Martin seemed to have an influence on the author's decision to become a doctor: "Apr 6 Nothing much doing in school. After school went with Harry Green to Convention Hall. Saw General Motors exhibit. Went in Phila General Hospital and saw Martin. Went all around Psychopathic department. Ate supper with him in the hospital. He then gave me material for talk. Came home and did lessons. Aug 11 Got up slightly late. Rochelle called up so I went over there. Stayed there all afternoon. At night got Mort and went over to Rochelle's. Went for a ride and stopped at Kemmer's. Came home and Uncle Steve and Martin and all the girls were here. Took them home. Martin showed me his place at the Hospital. It's swell. Mar 17 Arose pretty early and went to the Philadelphia General Hospital. Saw an autopsy. Apr 20 After school went over to Martin's. We then went to the Phila Gen Hospital and I made the rounds with him. Attended a conference led by Dr. Robinson." Sidney Irving Brody went on to graduate from the Hahnemann Medical College in 1941 He was affiliated with the Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia. The three diaries are all hardcover one is a Wanamaker the other two are slightly larger at 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and both cover are attached but have detached from the spine on the front hinge. All three diaries have an entry for everyday of the year. Overall VG. BIO NOTES: Obituary: Sidney Brody 1st commanding officer of Quonset Naval Hospital dies at 96. Capt. Sidney I. Brody the first commanding officer of the Naval Hospital at Quonset Point and the first physician to pilot a Navy jet and land on an aircraft carrier died Saturday at his home in Brookline Mass. at the age of 96. A native of Philadelphia and the husband of the former Muriel Myers to whom he was married 69 years Brody was a pioneer in the field of aerospace medicine. When the Navy developed its F-9 jet he was the first to take it to an altitude of 60000 feet. Commissioned a Navy lieutenant junior grade in the Navy Medical Corps in 1942 Brody worked as a Navy flight surgeon in several venues including China and the Philippines when he developed his interest in flying according to his wife. By 1947 he had undergone training as a naval aviator and became the medical officer for Carrier Air Group 4 serving aboard the aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt. After becoming a physician and test pilot he served as a liaison to the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and in the early 1950s was part of team that developed the first pressurized flight suit for pilots for high-altitude flights. Brody eventually became the first senior medical officer aboard the Saratoga. Then influenced by President John F. Kennedy's physician Janet Travell he developed innovative treatments for myofascial pain discovering that sore throat pain often originates in the neck muscles. In 1966 he became the first commanding officer at the Naval Hospital at Quonset Point continuing there until his retirement as a Navy captain in 1970. It was then that he moved to Cumberland where he continued to practice internal medicine for 28 years focusing on chronic pain and immune disorders. He also taught for a short time at Brown Medical School and made rounds at Rhode Island Hospital. ‎AUGUSTA MAINE NEW YORK CITY ME NY. Very Good. 1943. On offer is one of the finest World War II homefront diaries we have ever encountered. Mrs. Leon Williams of Augusta Maine and living at Concord Haven and the Augusta House using a largish thick 1945 journal style page a day diary writes retrospectively of 1943 and 1944 and then 1945. Whether she is copying from older books and transferring the entries or writing from memory is not known but her writings are very detailed and specific. It is also uncertain if she was born in America or England though we do believe she is British by birth what is known is that she is a staunch lover of both countries relishing in the determination of the British against Germany and America's own battle against the Nazis. She sews for British children knits socks for soldiers attends bond drives and quarrels with those that treat the war effort too lightly especially those who do not have their sons or daughters fighting the Germans as her own son Peter was doing. Widowed in the mid 1930s her husband was an important inventor and scientist in dental practice and the Williams family traced its roots back to Revolutionary times. See the biographical notes. Mrs. Williams has had a sensational life: In 1890 she took a trip to New Zealand. She has lived in Australia and adores the country. In 1910 she left New York for England. In 1943 she was living in New York and then to Maine. She has recurring bouts with Malaria - 'the old bug'. We figure she is in her sixties as she mentions being required to retire from business. This is a singularly unique and formidable woman in the mould of a Margaret Thatcher. She has a tremendous moral compass and does not hold punches: 'They do not speak my language in Augusta. They know so little beyond trivial affairs…yet they are big bugs in their tiny world.' She has a number of problems with some Maine residents given how insulated from the War Maine is and the attitudes of some rile her to no end. She is on top of all the world news and the burden of the world's woes weigh on her. She records the numbers of dead in London Blitz she records details on many areas of the war effort. She makes an oath that as long as the boys are in the trenches and waging war she will not sing or dance or attend parties. She detests the complainers and her entries regarding the death of Roosevelt are eye watering. She pays homage to FDR declaring him the greatest man that ever lived. Another emotional passage is her description of being in Egypt in 1901 when her beloved Queen Victoria dies and the toll it takes on her. BIO NOTES: James Leon Williams April 18 1852 - February 23 1932 was an American prosthodontist and a pioneer dental histologist. He discovered dental plaque. In 1785 Leon's great-grandfather Jacob Williams a U.S. Army captain during the American Revolution settled in Maine. A native of Massachusetts he had a son Richard around the year 1794. On May 25 1829 Richard had a son Calvin who would be Leon's father. Sometime around 1879 J. Leon Williams began a two-year apprenticeship by a Dr. Roberts in North Vassalboro Maine and later began practicing in the same town. Williams later passed examinations for the DDS degree at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and the equivalent LDS degree in Ireland. He joined the Maine Dental Society and used the opportunity to borrow their microscope to study the histology and pathology of tooth enamel. In the early 1880s common crown and bridge techniques were not well-known or widespread. Williams sought to make information on these techniques available to all dentists through the pages of The Dental Cosmos. In 1885 he embarked on a journey to improve the state of dental prostheses by designing more aesthetic artificial teeth that better matched the overall facial dimensions of the patient. He convinced an American artificial tooth manufacturer to take up his cause and produce his designs on the condition that other dentists would embrace the new forms. Williams also practiced dentistry in London and was one of the founders of the International Association for Dental Research. Mrs. Williams writes almost daily until the summer and then she becomes sporadic. ‎1912 - 1921 ORIGINAL FASCINATING PAIR OF DENSELY WRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DIARIES DETAILING THE LIFE OF A ST. LOUIS MAN FROM CHASING GIRLS TO WARFARE IN THE TRENCHES‎

‎ST. LOUIS MISSOURI MO USA. Very Good. 1912. On offer is a very interesting comprehensive pair 2 of 1912 through 1921 manuscript diaries handwritten by Roy B. Koch b. Oct. 5th 1892 of St. Louis Missouri as identified at the end of 'Book 1' of the pair. These two largish 8 x 4 inch flip style notebooks are numbered 1 and 3 and though number 2 and 4 are mentioned they are absent. Very fully written on nearly every page front and back Roy is a dedicated diarist and meticulous with his writing using red ink to write the day and date and black or blue ink to write the day's events. Book 1 begins September 13th 1912 until January 31st 1914. Book 3 is dated September 3 1917 through May 1921. Just 19 years old at the beginning of Book 1 historians researchers and collectors will be enthralled with this amazing diarist who even writes the whole time he is in the trenches in battle during his service in World War I. Observing this young man's evolution from typical American teenager to hardened soldier he begins typically: him working hanging out with friends and girls until all hours of the night going to the YMCA a lot canoeing and camping out. He pays careful attention to the money he spends and loans to friends; what he owes them and what they owe him. He's not satisfied with his job so he finds another one and quits and then seems to be on a constant search for the right one. Interestingly especially for his age he goes to the doctor and gets circumcised and mentions the doctor having a helper that day and that the next day he had cocaine coming out of his organ. He joins some sort of Cavalry troop with permission from his father and whose signature he requires. They horseback ride and fight mock battles. Finally he joins the army and goes to war. He writes every day and describes his war experience in detail. At the end of the war by saying that it was "a restless night of joy" and that the German and American soldiers came out of their trenches and exchanged rations and the Americans gave the Germans cigarettes. On offer is a super detailed vintage manuscript diary and journal handwritten by a young Morman Missionary named Valentino Jay Tolman of Stockton California. Using a large 8¾ x 7¾ inch 'Missionary Journal' with pre-printed template pages issued from Salt Lake City by an extension of the Mormon Church this book records in intimate detail this earnest young man's desire to serve his Church in outreach his excitement of the endeavour and in striking detail the year of his service as he does an exemplary job keeping this book up as a diary - he does leave a number of the introductory pre-printed form pages empty. From Rome in 1986 he records everything that occurs through December 31st 1986 over some 300 pages. Historians and researchers of the contemporary Missionary experience especially from a 'boot camp' perspective would be hard pressed to find a more expressive enthusiastic young man who is a super diarist. Along with the handwritten book is a modest archive of photographs letters greeting cards and clippings. She notes bank depostis and purchases and all manner of entertainments she attends. Letters received and written are all recorded. She also mentions many hundreds of people and local events of which here is a hodge-podge: Dr. Darch Jessie and Eleanor St. Denis Alex Blue funeral Jenny Boynton Jimmy Harkness dropped dead on his train Maude Thompson Mount Notre Dame Convent Henry Birks and Sons Mina Kerr Louisa Phillips in Cuba Mrs. Chas. B. Howard Dr. Shreve's Lenten lecture Jean Mitchell marriage Bruce Fletcher reception cancelled because old Mrs. McKecknie died organist Mr. Bearder concert at St. Peter's Nellie Long Chief Davidson burial Juvenile Pollard Co. of Australia's stage production 'Sargeant Bruce' etc. etc. Ruby is also a religious Roman Catholic she mentions taking Communion Christmas Day woman much of whose life along with her mom and sister Nellie spend going to Church attending lectures at Church or having dinner or get-togethers with certain Church connected friends. Interestingly she attends functions at all the churches - Catholic Protestant and Epicopalian and Presbyterian are all mentioned. I believe she works for a paper mill and or a large printer as she mentions working with paper and printers on a large scale. Also I note of interest is that she writes as a pure anglophone. Not a hint or trace of French in this woman that lives in a very french provincial town. Perhaps she was originally from elsewhere. This is a super peek at a typical Quebec provincial life in the early 20th century. ‎1849 - 1850 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A REBEL AND PARTICIPANT IN THE REVOLUTION OF BADEN DETAILING HIS PARTICIPATION ARREST INTERROGATION AND IMPRISONMENT‎

‎Donaueschingen Germany Southhern Germany. Very Good. 1849. On offer is a very unique historically significant 1849 - 1859 manuscript relic of the Revolution of Baden. There are fifty three 53 pages in German handwriting containing the journal entries of an unidentified 'rebel' and citizen of Donaueschingen Germany who was arrested as part of the Rebellion. While the participant is unidentified local historians researchers or collectors of the era may have enough clues to ascertain the writer's full identity. The entries are dated 6th of July 1849 the day before his arrest until the 25th of June 1850 the day the sentence of the Royal Court was handed down. The accused describes graphically where and how his accommodations were by whom and when he was interrogated and for which accusations how he responded and gives such an informative picture of that time and those circumstances from the point of view of someone who at the end of the Revolution of Baden was arrested by the Prussians as a supporter of the revolution. Here are some snippets: 6th July 1849: "Friday night at about 11 pm marched the troops and the guards under the leadership of Siegel Werner Gögg and so on off toward Hüfingen." 7th July 1849: "On Saturday marched against them the Hessians the Prussians the Bavarians the Mecklenburgers the Frankfurters and the Nassauers about 6000 men towards Donaueschingen a small city in the Black Forest region where 3000 men mostly Bavarians were stationed. On this day I got 20 meters of accommodations…" In the evening at 7 o'clock I was by the Brigadier and the Hessian Provost on orders by the Civil Commissioner Refanie supposedly because of favouring the revolt arrested. There follow descriptions about the type and place of his accommodation observations about the high number of men stationed in Donaueschingen speculation that he could only have been arrested because of a denunciation; on the 9th of July he was apprised of the accusations against him; there follow the days of the hearings with exact descriptions of the proceedings: "on the 2nd January 1850 I had my final interrogation…" "Tuesday the 25th June 1850 they revealed the royal court's verdict upon which I on Monday appealed to the upper court registered." With this last sentence the entries end. The first 45 pages are in a 45-page stitched notebook at the approximate size of 15.5 x 10 cm. and a further 8 pages of the same size are loose. Historians collectors and researchers will recognize the the utter uniqueness and rarity of this manuscript. Overall VG. Juli 1849 wegen "Begünstigung des Aufstandes" verhaftet worden war. Die Aufzeichnungen sind in der Zeit vom 6. Juli 1849 dem Tag vor seiner Verhaftung bis zum 25. Juni 1850 dem Tag der Urteilsverkündung durch das Hofgericht erfolgt. Der Beschuldigde schildert anschaulich wo und wie er untergebracht war von wem er wann zu welchen Vorwürfen verhört wurde was er darauf erwiderte und gibt so ein aufschlußreiches Bild der damaligen Zeit und Umstände aus der Sicht eines am Ende des badischen Aufstandes von den Preußen als Begünstiger der Revolution Verhafteten. ‎PORTAGE CITY SPRING LAKE WISCONSIN WI. Very Good. 1939. On offer is an fascinating diary chronicling in fantastic detail and comprehensiveness the entire life of a Mrs. Carrie Cecilia Cole Frye. The diary was begun in 1908 but it begins all the way back from her birth in 1864. She details her childhood family life parents brothers and sisters notable births deaths marriages her marriage to Robert John Frye the first time she was able to vote for President her family being quarantined for a Smallpox outbreak and so much more all the way up to 1939. This is a tremendously unique document covering a person’s entire life in unprecedented detail. From reading this diary it is easy to see that Mrs. Cole had an exceptional and truly fulfilled life. Born on February 18 1864 in Portage City Wisconsin to a family with ten other children she writes about moving around the state often. A child of strict parents she began working at 10 years old for her room board and education. In 1882 she met Robert John Fry a 34-year-old Civil War veteran whom she would later marry on July 2 1884. She and Robert Fry had five children one passed away in her infancy and homesteaded on a 40-acre ranch just north of Lakewood Wisconsin. She talks about numerous positions she held as housekeeper caregiver and cook always returning however to the homestead in the spring and summer. In 1909 Robert Fry became quite ill and moved into the Wisconsin Veteran's home. Shortly after her husband moved in Mrs. Cole followed first rooming in Marston Hall. At this point she became the primary bread winner for the family and began working as a telephone operator for the Veteran's home making $15.00 per month. She quickly ascended the ranks and earned the title of Chief Telephone Operator along with a pay increase to $25.00 per month. On March 11 1914 her husband and true love Robert John Fry passed away from "prolonged paralysis of the limbs and a heart seizure." She ended up selling the family farm netting $800.00 and on September 1 1914 left her post as Chief Telephone Operator and began working for the post office as Assistant Postmistress for $20.00 per hour. Again she ascended through the ranks through sheer hard work and determination ultimately achieving position as the Head Postmistress. Interestingly she also tells of the first time she was able to vote in the first election after Women's Suffrage the 19th Amendment had been passed into law. She notes on September 22 1923 that she received a telegram from Washington D.C. saying that she will be receiving pension pay as soon as she submits the appropriate paperwork as the President had signed the Omnibus Bill into law. She sees the beginning of World War I with one of her sons volunteering to serve. She celebrates his safe return and the first Armistice Day Celebration on November 11 1921. She also sees the Great Depression and the start of World War II. By the last few years of the book she is a fairly old woman and her diary notes mostly weather visits from friends and family births and deaths. A life this fully detailed and chronicled is so very rarely found to be read and appreciated. This is an exceptionally interesting document of a life lived through so much love happiness tragedy and war spanning 74 years of life. Though the text ends in 1939 Carrie C. Frye would live a few more year until 1946. The diary is 98 pages long and each page is almost completely filled with writing sometimes from the very top to the very bottom. On only two pages is there an instance of the whole page not being devoted to writing. On these two pages Carrie has pasted cloth on the page that reads “To The One I Love” and writes around it. The book is in very good condition. The front and back cover and spine are in good shape. It is a half-leather binding. The pages within are in good condition as well exhibiting very little wear rips tears or discoloration. For the most part the journal is easy to read with Carrie’s script in black ink. Beginning in 1929 around page 80 the days between entries begin to shrink and the handwriting gets smaller and more cramped making comprehension of the content more difficult. From 1933 on especially the handwriting is small cramped and can be somewhat difficult to decipher at points. The black and blue ink used throughout the book shows only minimal signs of fading and is almost entirely confined to the first few pages. OVERALL: VG Background: Caroline Cecilia “Carrie” Cole Frye was born on February 18 1864 in Portage City Columbia County Wisconsin. She lived all 82 years of her life in Wisconsin and died on March 22 1946 in King Waupaca County. TEXT: “Feb. 18 1864 - Born Portage City Columbia Co. Wisconsin. Wednesday at 5 P.M.”; “1867 - Fall of this year moved with my Father Vernon Cole and mother Sarah Hay Cole to Spring Lake Waushara Co. Wisconsin onto a farm of fifty acres called the Bailey Place”; “May 16 1913 - John and I went home to Lakewood and Mountain for two weeks visit. John said I would never go with him again for he felt so miserable he did not think he would ever be able to go again.”; “February 3 1914 - John Fry sustained second stroke of paralysis. I laid off working office and took care of him up to Feb. 17. When I went to work again. Laid off work again March 8. John Fry left this work of sorrow March 11 - 3:30 P.M. on Wednesday.”; “January 1 1920 - I am entering on the New Year with good health and am trying to serve my God to the best of my ability. We are having our old fashioned winter with about one foot of new snow and up to the present date the coldest has been 30 below zero.”; “February 18 1920 - I am 56 years old today. Still continues to be cold."; “November 2 1920 - I voted the first time for President as the U.S. Woman's Suffrage became a law!"; “November 7 1920 - Harry Hines took his wife May and Sarah and Annie Mulligan and me for a ride by auto over the Columbia Highway; saw some grand sights and returned at his home at 9 p.m. and he took Sarah and Annie and me into Portland about ten miles from his home. Sarah and I stayed over night at the Y.W.C.A."; “November 11 1921 - Armistice Day Celebration at Wis. Vets. Home in the evening at the Bryant Hall. I C. C. Frye spoke the following piece holding our glorious flag in my hand . . ."; December 1 1921 - Robert J. Frye my son started from Heppner Oregon where he is living to go to Portland Oregon 200 miles by train and at Celilo Ore the train he was on and another passenger train came head on together. He was hurt in his side but not serious and was out of the hospital Dec 4 and to his sister's home and went home to Heppner Dec 5; The R.R. Ridgeway going through Basic Training with the United States Naval Construction Battalions better known as the ‘Seabees.’ Beginning with his arrival on February 19th 1945 the diary is a detailed and comprehensive account of the process by which young men were shaped and molded into Seabees capable of being both skilled construction workers building naval bases and trained soldiers who could take up a weapon at a moment’s notice. The Basic Training occurs at the Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville Rhode Island and goes from February 19th to March 21th 1945 right before the author’s embarkation overseas which Ridgeway believes will be China. Almost every single day in the month-long training has a detailed and interesting diary entry written by Ridgeway. For the most part the entries consist of an account of activities done during the day and at what time however he does supplement this training log with personal anecdotes of his feelings and of stories told to him by other soldiers such as a lecture by a fellow Seabee who had been aboard a torpedoed ship that sank and who spent 4 days in the water before being found. The diary is 56 pages long and each page has every single line filled with writing by Ridgeway. Names in the diary include: Lonny Amicucci Lester Mut Connie Rhoades L. Yager and others. The diary measures 6-3/4 x 8-3/8 and is in very good condition. The front and back cover are made of somewhat flimsy board and the company that manufactured the notebook is”Juniata Composition”. The front cover also contains the author’s name the “School” which Ridgeway writes as “CMIC - Co. 6B-1” as well as his “Class” which is “Davisville R.I.” The pages are still in good condition showing only minimal signs of discoloration and wear. No rips or tears are present. The diary contains 5 loose pieces of paper at the end a continuation of the entry that takes up the last page of the book. These pages are a bit flimsier than the ones bound to the book but they are still in very good condition. Ridgeway wrote the whole diary in pencil which is very easy to read and legible throughout. Some slight fading can be found but nothing that affects the legibility of the words written. OVERALL: VG. Text: “Feb. 19 1945. Dod Dodderidge took me over to the bus station at 6:33 A.M. Reported to Federal Bldg. at 10:00A.M. Left on train for Davisville R.I. at 4:55 P.M. Went thru Columbus Pittsburgh Philadelphia New York and Providence. Arrived At Camp Endicott 7:30 P.M.”; “Feb. 21. Reveille at 0600. Shaved etc. Chow at 0655. At 0800 received our work clothes GI issue. They are called greens. Returned to barracks and dressed in our greens.They are really warm. Rhode Island is much colder than Indiana.Chow is excellent and there is plenty of it. We are stationed at barracks D-6 and in our platoon we have 30 men from Texas Oklahoma Louisiana Missouri Arkansas and Indiana. They are all tops and I believe that by the end of the boot we will have one of the best outfits in recruit training. I have been appointed company clerk and mail clerk which means a lot of extra work. However I am excused from all work details and fire watches. Our trip to ships service once a day and mail deliveries at 1115 and 1615 are the high points of the day. There are lots of cigars at Ships Service and we are allowed 2 packs of cigarettes each day.We took our physical examination and all 30 boys in the platoon made the grade. We are company B-6 and have a swell fellow of about 35 the name of Lonny Amicucci for our Chief. He spent 2 yrs in the S. Pacific and really knows the ropes.”; “Feb. 28 - Reveille at 0600. Clean up the barracks. Chow at 0655. At 0800 we went for 2 hours of Judo. Now those stomach muscles hurt. At 1000 we had an hour of Close Order Drill. Mail at 1115 and altho I didn't’ receive any there was quite a pile of it.It’s beginning to get heavy. I have not had much time to write anybody except Betsy and Mom so I can’t expect much mail. It sure is a shot in the arm and there is nothing her in camp they can give you to replace news from home. Chow at 1155. Close Order Drill from 1300 to 1500. We had a lecture on Military Courtesy at 1500. Mail at 1615.Chow at 1755. I wrote a letter to Betsy in the evening. Laps at 2130.”; “March 13.at 1500 we went to the Chemical Warfare Hut and went thru Gas Mask Drill. After the Drill we went thru a Tear Gas Chamber. I couldn’t get a mask to fit me but went into the chamber anyway to find out what would happen. I found out damn quick about 10 seconds to be exact. I really tore out of there and by the time I got my gas mask off I was crying like a baby. My eyes burned but after about 15 minutes I was OK again. When they issue us new gas mask I’m going to be damn sure mine fits. If this had been a real gas attack i would certainly been a dead duck and that isn’t much of a joke.”; “March 21.Reveille at 0600. At 1300 we went to E-5C Drill Hall for our last Drill Period.” United States Naval Construction Battalions better known as the Seabees from the Naval Construction Force of the United States Navy. Their nickname is a heterograph of the first initials "C.B." from the words Construction Battalion. Naval Construction Battalions were conceived of as a replacement for civilian construction companies working for the US Navy after the United States was drawn into World War II with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor On 7 December 1941. International law made it illegal for civilians to resist enemy attack doing so would classify them as guerrillas for which they could be summarily executed. The Seabees would consist of skilled workers that would be trained to drop their tools if necessary and take up their weapons at a moment's notice to defend themselves. The concept model: A USMC–trained Battalion of construction tradesmen a military equivalent of those civilian Companies that would be capable of any type of construction anywhere needed under any conditions or circumstance. It was quickly realized that this model could be utilized in every theater of operations as it was seen to be flexible and adaptable. The use of USMC organization allowed for smooth coordination integration or interface of both the NCF and Marine Corps elements. In addition Seabee Battalions could be deployed individually or in multiples as the project scope and scale dictated. They were unique at conception and remain so today. On offer is a fascinating archive of original handwritten letters and ephemera from Sarah Howe in Nantes France who married the vice-consul in Nantes Antoine Martial Antoine Martial St-Cyr Louis Azais. These are mostly by Sarah to her brothers and sisters but some are by her husband discussing a wide range of topics: politics living in Paris her husband slavery food prices adultery etc. etc. There are a few pieces of ephemera; a school essay a legal document or two and the letters make for approximately 73 pages and date from the early to mid 1840's and are on for the most part folio 8 ¾ x 13 ¼ inch paper. ‎1929 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM DETAILING A SIGNIFICANT RELIEF EXPEDITION TO CHINA BY TEN POMONA COLLEGE STUDENTS‎

‎CHINA. Very Good. 1929. On offer is a super significant photograph album detailing an important 1929 through 1930 'Oriental Study Expedition' requested and underwritten by the well known Durfee Foundation wherein ten Pomona College students traveled on a one-year expedition to China. Some later pictures show them in Mongolia in 1931 and Bulgaria in 1934. The book was kept and we assume compiled by Oliver H. Haskell b.1908 who later served as director of the China Aid Council of the American League for Peace and Democracy and traveled through the Soviet Union. He reflected on relations between China and Russia and the impact of the 1930 expedition on his adult life. There are approximately 112 snapshot photographs contained in old disbound album. The photos are for the most part good but it must be noted that the album proper is a wreck. Casual research finds that in a series of interviews in 1989 Mr. Haskell discussed his family background and early life his initial career objectives and political views his relationship with Avery and Tsui his involvement in the Expedition despite his own initial rejection of the idea. He discussed his prior knowledge of China and Japan his first impressions and he relates the social activities of the group the attitudes of the Chinese students and famine relief work. Other interviews record the recollections of these men as to: planning the expedition; the year of travel in China; and their reflections on the impact the trip had on their lives. The interviews are part of an Oriental Study Expedition Archive housed in Special Collections of the Honnold Library at Claremont Graduate University. Pomona College is a private residential liberal arts college in Claremont California. The founding member of the Claremont Colleges Pomona is a non-sectarian coeducational school. ‎1961 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN HAND ILLUSTRATED SCRAPBOOK AND TRAVEL JOURNAL OF ONE GERMAN MAN'S TRIP HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD‎

‎ASEA ABOARD THE HIPPER. Very Good. 1961. On offer is the super original manuscript journal and travel diary of a young German sailor in training aboard school frigate 'Hipper' with an escort being the school frigate Spee the namesakes of both ships were scuttled during World War II - the Spee in 1939 the Hipper in 1945. Beginning January 5th until February 8th they are in "cadet training" in the harbor at Kiel Germany near the north coast east of Denmark. They do go to sea on training maneuvers but only for a few hours at a time. Each of the cadets rotates through various duties and watches. "Clean Ship" is mentioned a lot night watch on deck and the usual naval watches. There is mention of provisioning the ship and there are photos of beer being loaded. On Thursday February 9 1961 they get ready to leave the harbor - lots of relatives come to see them off. The writer of the journal's father brother and sister come - he mentions that his mother is in hospital. When they depart at 10 am there is a large colorful mass of people on the pier. From this point on he notes latitude and longitude degrees and the time 1200 with every entry. He mentions passing between Dover and Calais February 11 in the English Channel and Casablanca February 17 the Canary Islands on February 18. On February 21st he talks about crossing the equator and the ceremonies that take place There's a type-written memorandum dated February 23 1961 from the ship's doctor with cautions and tips on how to handle being in the tropics. On Thursday February 23 they are in Porto al Pedro then Porto Grande then Cabo Verde - where he writes about asking if Cabo Verde is a part of Portugal or a Portuguese colony. He makes a comment about the teacher saying something that he didn't understand. The teacher says it doesn't matter it's better that way. Then in English: "We cannot say and discuss all things we are thinking about because the walls have got ears." On Wednesday March 1 he makes a comment about the fleas they brought on board in Porto Grande - lots of the crew have bites. He learns that the next day the Admiral's flag is to be raised - Admiral Triton is to come aboard to see the preparations for the christening. There's a typewritten sheet with orders for Thursday March 2nd 1961 - with times and duties outlined. The ceremonial inspection etc. was to begin at 16:30. There's also an unused $10 stamp from Cabo Verde it's nested in that page. Penedos de Sao Pedro e Sao Paulo - an archipelago of cliffs that stretch out into the sea of the coast of Brazil. On Friday March 3 the "Equator Crossing Christening" by His Majesty Neptune is to take place at 9 am. They arrived in Rio de Janeiro on March 10. The following days until March 15 when they departed are descriptions of his impressions of Rio and the girls he met. A typewritten memo about shopping in Buenos Aires cautioning against shopping without knowing the shops and recommending that the crew accept the advice and help of resident Germans who would be able to suggest suitable gifts for loved ones back home. The memo provides names and addresses of shops restaurants and public transportation methods. There's a declaration signed by Mr. Behrendt on March 21 acknowledging that he owes the government .96 DM for losing 3 teaspoons. They arrive in Buenos Aires on Friday March 24. He's collected "souvenirs" - a menu with handwritten prices and daily specials cigar wrappers a city map Argentinian stamps a 10-peso note a candy or chewing gum wrapper and a post-card picture of the Admiral Graf Spee battle ship burning presumably in 1939 a price list from a liquor store a cardboard coaster some tickets addresses of women and a newspaper clipping a receipt and a type-written news report that says "for authorized use only". They depart from Buenos Aires on Sunday April 2nd Easter Sunday in the afternoon. There's a loose leaf inserted that one one side has the "Serenity" prayer in German and on the other side from a resolution of the German Catholic Youth Movement of June 19 1960 discussing the political correctness of the various names by which the former East German Republic which is on their list of no-no's was referred to and makes two recommendations for what would be acceptable and appropriate. By the entry of Saturday April 15 there's pamphlet about the Amazon region in German. Between pages 72 and 73 there's a type-written sheet that appears to be a variety-show program by the ship's crew. On Tuesday April 18 they are Belem do Para on the Amazon Estuary. There is a receipt from a hotel restaurant. They stop in Trinidad Port of Spain Porto Azul. La Guaira Venezuela. The last entry in the book is Sunday May 7th. There are later entries on other sheets of paper and it looks like Markus Behrendt was attempting to write about his experiences and publish or self-publish them. There are a number of beginnings of either short stories or memoirs and of course the letter he received from the printer which provided a quote for various quantities various page counts of a letter-sized A4 book including a linen-bound and embossed cover. His writing is articulate and insightful he's not just reporting what he's seen and done but also includes some commentary - his feelings about things and his thoughts about them. Superbly informative our writer using hand drawn maps colored flags tipped in photographs with explanations of his voyage and service. Littered throughout with letters postcards technical details ship's progress reports all presented with panache make for a first class scrapbook and relic of the Post World War II era. The book is overstuffed 12 x 8 inches with over 100 pages almost completely filled in the trip records the boats course: Kiel to Porto Grande to Rio Buenos Aires Belem Port of Spain La Guaira Port Royal Savannah Punta Delgadi and final return to Kieln makes for a near epic journey. Historians and collectors of this notorious ship will undoubtedly recognize the uniqueness of this journal. ‎LOS ANGELES 1938. On offer is the original handwritten five year diary of Agnes Gunirlle a housewife and waitress originally from the small town of Mondamin Iowa but living in Los Angeles California for the duration of the diary. She and her husband "Winston" who she refers to most often just as "Mr" live in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the city that they move into during the beginning of August 1938. Ms. Gunirlle's job as a waitress is often mentioned mostly as she talks about the tips she made. "Aug 13 1938. Sat. Went to look at a job worked from 4-12 at night. Home on bus made 30 in tips. on 6619 Western." There are also occasional references to going out dancing or shopping with friends as well as going to the California beach or to Redondo and other seaside towns for events and daytrips. Agnes Gunirrle is young but past school age as much of her life revolves around going to work and church as well as female activities such as knitting pressing clothes and doing household chores. She goes several days a week to church in addition to every Sunday. Most dates contain four entries for the years 1938-1941 though some entries from earlier years run longer and near the end of the year the entries for 1941 stop completely for months at a time. The entries are almost entirely in pencil. On many pages the pencil marks have smudged over the years and can make reading some dates difficult. Here are some snippets: October 2 1938 Sun. Stayed home and went to the show in the evening. To church at 9 bells. Jan 7 1939 Sat. Work at 900 bells. Worked till 8:00 at night. Home and played Chinese checkers. August 1 1939 Mon. Started down the hill at 8 bells & then to L.A. at 1:30 & home. slept all afternoon & evening. Mr. O'Streh got mark mad. September 22 1939 Thu. got my hair died then went to look for work in Hollywood on Vernon. Got a job for fri. & sat. Home & knitted & pressed clothes to bed at 10 bells. October 8 1940 Sun. Translated: TO MY COUSIN CARDINAL ERSKINE Dear cousin nothing could make me happier than once again receiving proof of your feelings for me at the occasion of the New Year. I do not doubt your sincerity for a minute and I can assure you of my ever-present desire to find occasion to prove my goodwill to you. I pray that God shall help you my cousin in granting you health and well being. Written in Paris January 10th 1808. Josephine". The letter includes the original letter seal with " Imperatrice" embossed on it as well as the original mat with lot number and description from when the previous buyer purchased it: 483. JOSEPHINE Document Signed 1 p. folio Paris Jan.10 1808 with seal. To her cousin in reply to his felicitations on the New Year. The letter is actually loose measuring 15 x 9 inches. At one point it was matted but the mat has become very brittle and loose and is chipped in different places broken off in parts. Two small bits of the upper edges are torn off maybe 1/2 half an inch. Letter is complete intact very attractive with a signature of Josephine at the end of the seven-line paragraph. Her signature is connected by a long wiggled line extending over the entire blank area of the letter to a second signature that reads J.M.Debeauharnais. Scans available of letter seal and signatures.
