About the book >> This is his own account of the three years of war; a unique true story of the ordinary Spanish people's struggle to survive the feudal rigours in their country. In November 1939 Antonio Candela stumbled over a Pyrenean mountain ridge to freedom in France. He had survived the horrors of the Spanish Civil War a 600km half-starved trek and imprisonment in a Fascist labour camp. He had been born into a poor peasant family in Extremadura Spain in 1916. He never received any formal education. When Fascist rebel troops suddenly invaded Spain in July 1936 the war caught him entirely by surprise in the ancient city of Badajoz. It was only by a miracle that he escaped the atrocities and massacre there. He sought refuge with the Republicans and joined them in the people's struggle to defend the Spanish government. He fought in many famous battles and began to learn how to read and write while in the trenches. Soon he began to understand the political complexities of his country that were the causes of injustices brutal repression and abject poverty. He had entered the war as an illiterate labourer and emerged enlightened frustrated and indignant but alive. United Writers Ltd Hardcover

Smithers, Peter
Adventures of a Gardener
UK: The Harvill Press London 1995. Book. Excellent. Hardcover. 27cm. obit for Smithers really makes you want to pick up this book get a glass of red have the day off to give it your full attention - "Had he been so inclined Peter Smithers could have written several intriguing autobiographical volumes about his career as a politician diplomat scholar and wartime intelligence agent. Yet he produced only one and by calling it Adventures of a Gardener he signalled that his distinguished and eventful public life had always in his own assessment taken second place to his lifelong passion for horticulture. For instance he described in the 1995 book how during the Second World War he was thrilled to be assigned to a sensitive post in Central America principally because it "would oblige me to pass through some of the world's richest flora". reviews JIM REYNOLDS Irish nmes "Smithers is already famous in the horticultural world for his knowledge of magnolias tree peonies and blies. but the book should make him equally celebrated for his philosophical approach to life and gardening. It is compulsive reading" MARY KEEN Spectator "His knowledge makes his book one which has to be absorbed by any fellow enthusiast" ROBIN LANE FOX Financial Times 211pp 1.2 kgs. All pp clean white & tightly bound dj unclipped a small spot on compressed pp edge right side clean top & bottom .review > I really enjoyed this first-hand look into Marilyn's life. It made me sad it made me laugh and it made me understand her better. review by DMarshall > Well the book arrived yesterday morning and by last night I had read the entire thing-- it's just that much fun. After reading though it would seem that the subtitle to the book should be How Did the Greatest Actor in the World End Up So Stiff and the Fluff Sexpot End Up So Very Very Good That's the basic question of the whole Prince and Showgirl experience. And Colin Clark bless his heart was right there and just removed enough to be able to observe without anyone shooing him away. The book if anything is even better than the documentary-- and best of all it is very often laugh out loud hilarious. St. Martins Press, New York Hardcover

Manhunter the Life and Times of Frank Hamer
NY: Berkley Publishing N.Y. 1997. Book. Very Good. Paperback. 16cm. Book has adhesive plastic cover so it'skept really well previous business stamp inside spine hardly creased so I'd guess read 3 or so times. Frank Hamer seems to have led a most extraordinary life minor amongst it being Bonnie & Clyde. If Bonnie & Clyde are classified as minor you can imagine what the rest is like! Francis Augustus Hamer March 17 1884 - July 10 1955 was a texas ranger known in popular culture for his involvement in tracking down and killing the criminal duo Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. In a career that spanned the last days of the 'Wild West' well into the automobile age Hamer acquired legendary status in Texas and the southwest as the archetypal Texas Ranger. He is an inductee to the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame. Hamer fought corrupt bankers police & politicians & probably should be cloned as soon as possible! This title is really elusive & fetches top dollar secure your copy today. Post within Aust will be by insured satchel - buyer overseas - it's light enough to avoid the $9 US security fee - email for a quote. Berkley Publishing, N.Y. Paperback
