Grant, Blanche C. (Editor)
KIT CARSON'S OWN STORY OF HIS LIFE: As dictated to Col. and Mrs. D. C. Peters about 1856-57 and never before published
Taos: Privately published 1926. First Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. 1st printing. Green-gray wraps with attractive SW Pueblo Indian design drawn by authority Kennedy Chapman which is reproduced on a page after the copyright and which identifies it as signifying "wind and rain." 138pp. Illustrated with a number of photographs and prints. A good plus copy. The book is NOT musty but is a little "wavy" as it seems the paper chosen responded over time to normal atmospheric moisture. No stains or chips. The text is stapled and the staples are rusty. Lower down on the inside of the cover some of the paper from the inside cover was a bit glued to the ffep however the paper is thick and this did not result in any hole to the cover. Lower spine split about 1" from front cover. It may easily be archivally reinforced by the buyer; we have chosen not to do so. Having said all this this copy deserves a vg grading. Privately published unknown

Breakenridge, William M.
HELLDORADO: Bringing the Law to the Mesquite Signed
Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 1st printing. Cloth. 256pp. Illustrated with vintage photos including portraits. On the lower title page is a library embossment and at the top gutter corner area is a call number in ink. A bookplate has been removed from the front paste down in a pretty careful way. So we call this a very very gentle ex-lib copy. On the ffep is a long presentation dated Tucson November 12th 1928 by Breakenridge to Mrs. Nan Wood the artist wife of noted Arizona book and American Indian photography collector Charles Morgan Wood. In the inscription Breakenridge says that Charles had "persuaded me to write this volume with the understanding that he would review it." Wood died in early 1927 and thus did not see the result of his persuasion. Volumes continue to be written about the whole Tombstone and Earp saga and Breakenridge is one of the key players in it. Cover corner points just exposed and bit of wear to head and toe of spine. No dj. We still grade this as a nearly very good copy. Houghton Mifflin hardcover

Szymczak, Chester J.
WHEN TIME STOOD STILL: The S. S. Dorchester's last heroic night Signed
Philadelphia: Dorrance & Co 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. 1st printing. Cloth. 109pp. Short presentation to Jack Cory once editor of the Rhinelander Wisconsin Daily News signed by Szymczak. This is the author's account using the pseudonym of Johnny Westcott in the text of his sailing on the troop transport ship S. S. Dorchester in early 1943 as a signalman from the States to Greenland. On February 3. a German U-Boat sunk the Dorchester with a loss of 678 men. Szymczak was a surviver and the last portion of the book is about the sinking and his survival. Although a slight book it is a powerful autobiographical account that draws the reader almost into the waves of the icy North Atlantic. Although found in a number of libraries it is a rare book and very seldom found. This copy fine in a very good unclipped dust jacket. Even the 1976 reprint is very difficult to find. Gideon, D. C.
INDIAN TERRITORY: Descriptive Biographical and Genealogical including the Landed Estates County Seats Etc. Etc. with a General History of the Territory in One Volume
NYC and Chicago: Lewis 1901. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 1st printing. Beautifully rebound in three-quarter leather and cloth with gilt titles slightly flaked on spine and with new endpapers. 956pp. 100 photogravure portraits plus several other photos. A. E. G. all edges gilt. Originally owned by and with the signature three times of "H. S. Suggs Berwyn I. T." The second Suggs signature was on a chipped sheet & in rebinding the binder affixed it to a sheet of matching tone and bound it in. The third signature of Mr. Suggs is written along the inner margin of where he is in the book pps. 580-581. Suggs ". came to Berwyn in the Indian Territory where he continued in the lumber business from Texas and also ran a cotton gin until 1901 when he sold his gin and is now engaged in the hardware and lumber business . . . he is interested also in the cattle business and firm being known as Suggs and Brother." The brother Sidney Suggs has an even longer entry in the volume and a portrait. A glossy photo of him and his family is laid in. It is printed from the archives of the Okla Hist Soc. One leaf pps 931-932 was once detached but has been tipped back in. It has tears radiating out from the gutter and has 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" inch loss of text in the middle of the page. Title page has two edge chips. One index sheet has old cloth tape edge repairs. Throughout there are some edge tears that have not been repaired but we have discovered none of a serious nature. Many tissue guards are missing. There is some browning/foxing on some pages but not extensively. Some page corners are rounded from use. We have conservatively graded this copy "good" but in our view with experience in these kinds of volumes if it were in our personal collection we would have no issue grading it very good. Adams Six-guns 1107 says "Has a long section on all the outlaws of the Indian Territory including the Dalton gang and the Cook gang ." but Adams adds the author is mistaken about Belle Starr's brother & repeats false information about her. In this section there is glowing information on the famous Black Man Deputy. U. S. Marshal Bass Reeves and an account of one of his captures of outlaws involving gunplay. An Oklahoma rarity. Howes G158. Lewis hardcover
