There is some fraying to the spine ends corners and spine joints along with some edge tearing to the spine joints and cloth to the spine. The former owner has tried to glue the front hinge as a repair. The text pages are generally clean and bright though there are spots of foxing. The rear endpaper has been removed. This book includes an early description of the game of baseball. There are copies of the first edition which include the first color illustrations of the game and others which lack the plates -- this is one of the latter. There are black and white illustrations of the game along with 10 pages of rules including this: "If an adversary stops the ball with his hat or cap or takes it from the hands of a party not engaged in the game no player can be put out unless the ball shall first have been settled in the hands of the pitcher." . . hardcover‎

Cloth wrinkled edge-rubbed lightly soiled & scuffed. Carries old donation bookplate. Binding shaken; else good condition. Colum 1881-1972 was an Irish-American author and poet. Born in Longford Ireland he was active in the Irish literary renaissance and helped found the famous Abbey Theatre. He married in 1912 and moved with his family to New York in 1914. They relocated to France in the 1930s where Colum renewed his friendship with James Joyce and for whom he typed parts of 'Finnegan's Wake'. On returning to America he taught comparative literature at Columbia University and became an American citizen in 1945. 'My Irish Year' is composed of studies made while the author was living among the people of the Midlands and the West of Ireland. 'It is not representative of the whole of Ireland: Catholic and Peasant Ireland only is shown localized in a strip of country crossing the Midlands to the West.' 'The life described may stand for the life of the Catholic peasantry. And the Catholic peasantry are not merely the bulk of the Irish population; they are roughly speaking the historic Irish nation' from the author's Introduction. The book is divided into four Parts the final one of which deals with 'The Crisis in Ireland'. The author was clearly a republican and eschews the control which England then exerted over Irish life and government. In this and in the experssion of his sentiments he clearly antecedes 'the Troubles' only a few years' hence. This is the first American edition this title also having been published in Great Britain by Mills and Boon 1912. It is a very scarce title by an important Irish American author playwright and poet. He succeeded to the peerage in 1802 and became a Tory MP in 1807 eventually becoming Foreign Secretary in 1830 a post which he held for many years and during many great international events and upheavals. He became prime minister in 1855. In all during his political career he was elected to sit in 17 parliaments; serving four monarchs: George III George IV William IV and Queen Victoria. All steel engravings present save for one plate in vol. II: 'The Empress of the French'. All are protected by tissue guard. A very robust handsome set on the shelf. Contents show occasional light foxing but are otherwise quite bright and unmarked except for a former owner's name M. E. Bassett Bordeaux 1931 written in red pencil on the side of the title page and a small 25 cent piece size circular rubber stamp also on the title page. The original front cover appears to have been glued to the frontispiece and the glue has darkened portions of the margins of the latter. The boards are only very slightly soiled. Martha Griffith Browne also known as Mattie Griffith was a white woman who prior to her conversion to abolitionism had owned slaves. She wrote sketches and poems for 'The National Anti-Slavery Standard' before writing this fictionalized slave narrative in 1856. 'Autobiography of a Female Slave' is one of several noteworthy antebellum novels about slavery that were written by abolitionist authors. In some cases these novels reflected the storytelling style and conventions of the slave narrative so convincingly that they were mistaken for actual autobiographies of former slaves. The effectiveness of these novels in representing slavery and the point of view of slaves made them useful weapons in the antislavery struggle. See: 'Documenting the American South. The title has recently been reprinted a number of times. Although the copyright page shows the date of 1856 when the novel was written it was not published until 1857. It has some light scratches and rubbing overall. The story of George Darby a medical student who became a medical missionary at Rivers Inlet on the west of coast of mainland British Columbia in 1912. He was honoured in 1944 by Chief Mood Humchitt who bestowed him with the name Wo-Ya-La "The Highest". The newsclipping in the back is about the author and his travels to the area as part of his writing research.
