Robert H. Davies
Perfection She Dances : A True Story of Love Drugs and Prison in Modern China
Harper Collins Australia 2001. Medium Trade Paperback. Very Good. Medium Trade Paperback. 325 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Harper Collins Australia 2001. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have light creasing. Corners of covers are moderately bumped. Spine has minimal reading creases. . Edges of pages are lightly browned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Robert Davies first went to China in 1988 as an overland backpacker. After a hair-raising two months touring Pakistan he found himself in Kashgar the fabled Silk Road city. It was here that his life would be irrevocably changed. He fell in love with Sharapet an Uighur/Uzbek lady who was already married with a daughter. Love made them blind to the bureaucracy they had to deal with and the thousands of miles they had to travel to obtain permission to marry. Sharapet's ex-husband returned from jail and sought revenge. Yet their love endured and cushioned the fall that came after Robert got involved in the trafficking of hashish. Arrested and taken 2500 miles across China to Shanghai he was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years behind bars in an Asian prison. He had suffered a legal system where law is merely a word and justice is as elusive as the holy grail. Fate however gave him a unique opportunity to observe a little-known world - one that he and only three other Britons had seen since China's Liberation in 1949. He eventually served seven-and-a-half years in Shanghai Tilan Qiao Prison and Shanghai Qing Pu Prison where along with the other western inmates he fought against a corrupt system in grim and draconian conditions with death a constant threat. These memoirs serve as an indictment against the Chinese legal system which he feels blatantly used him and other foreigners as propaganda tools. But they are also about the deference he concedes to a prison system that fed him well allowed him the chance to learn three languages and hone his skills in oil painting and playing the guitar. The book is a story of fatalism and inevitability; of international drug smuggling and the horrors of prison and of a love that endured years of separation and hardship. Quantity Available: 1. Jack & Sutherland John Sutherland
Stars Cars and Crystal Meth : The Adventures of a Personal Assistant Who Really Could Have Used One Himself
Faber and Faber UK 2016. First Edition. Trade Paperback. As New. Trade Paperback. 350 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Faber and Faber UK 2016. First Edition. CONDITION: This book is in as new condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing or wear. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. This book is an unread copy. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Jack Sutherland the narrator and protagonist of this memoir has you night say led a charmed life in the face of seeming damnation. A confirmed alcoholic in his early teens by his twenties he was PA and bodyguard to the Hollywood stars most notably Michael Stipe Ru Paul and Mickey Rourke. His work took him to exotic destinations around the world and bizarre encounters and requests. It also led him back to a smorgasbord of lethal addictions: alcohol marijuana ecstasy and perhaps most damaging of all crystal meth and the crazed chem sex that characterises its use. On the shores of death's coastline a nine stone skeleton in a frame that once boasted the shape and tone of a bodybuilder Jack is saved. By his father one of the literary world's most esteemed personalities: John Sutherland. A son's memoir told through the prism and prose of a father will surely take its place among the classics of contemporary addiction and recovery stories like A Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man and Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. Stars Cars and Crystal Meth lifts the lid on the shadow world of the Hollywood PA with grim but ultimately inspiring honesty. Quantity Available: 1. Murray was best known as the rally driver who in 1954 won the REDEX Round Australia Reliability Trial without the loss of a single point; but Jackrsquo;s sporting interests and achievements were eclectic and far-ranging. In his own words at different times throughout his life he was lsquo;engaged in various sports with various successesrsquo;: cycling; VFL schoolboy football; stock car racing; hill climbing motor races; circuit car racing; car endurance events; Australian and NSW Grand Prix racing; international and Australian rally driving; wrestling; boxing; crocodile kangaroo and buffalo hunting; ocean boat racing and waterskiingmdash;to name most but not all. Encounters with those who met him knew him and loved him now grow fewer and fewer as the years pass and the Reliability Trials of the 1950s drift into Australian history and folklore. Jackrsquo;s personal and nonpublic life showing the man behind the derring-do has never been fully explored or written about. Here for the first time is Murrayrsquo;s full story as told by his son Phil Murray. Son of the legendary lsquo;Gelignitersquo; Jack Murray Phil has inherited his fatherrsquo;s genes when it comes to adventure seeking personal challenges and embracing all life has to offer. Just as his father did Phil believes life is best lived following some pretty simple instructions: lsquo;Donrsquo;t take yourself too seriouslyrsquo;. Thus Phil is the perfect person to display to the world a man whom many thought they knew but who was much more complicated and talented than his racing exploits would lead us to believe. Growing up James watched a roll-call of political luminaries debating the fate of the Labor Party. He saw great victories and defeats at close hand. He believes both his father and his family paid a heavy price for politics. Speechless is James highly personal account of a year working in Canberra seen from both the inside and the outside. It would run for the next thirteen years and become one of the most-loved and most-watched programs on Australian television. Souad
Burned Alive
Bantam Australia 2004. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Trade Paperback. 210 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Bantam Australia 2004. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are reasonably tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: When Souad was seventeen she fell in love. In her village as in so many others sex before marriage was considered a grave dishonour to one's family and was punishable by death. This was her crime. Her brother-in-law was given the task of arranging her punishment. One morning while Souad was washing the family's clothes he crept up on her poured petrol over her and set her alight. In the eyes of their community he was a hero. An execution for a 'crime of honour' was a respectable duty unlikely to bring about condemnation from others. It certainly would not have provoked calls for his prosecution. More than five thousand cases of such honour killings are reported around the world each year and many more take place that we hear nothing about. Miraculously Souad survived rescued by the women of her village who put out the flames and took her to a local hospital. Horrifically burned and abandoned by her family and community it was only the intervention of a European ald worker that enabled Souad to receive the care and sanctuary she so desperately needed and to start her life again. She has now decided to tell her story and uncover the barbarity of honour killings a practice which continues to this day. Burned Alive is a shocking testimony a true story of almost unbellevable cruelty. It speaks of amazing courage and fortitude and of one woman's determination to survive. It is also a call to break the taboo of silence that surrounds this most brutal of practices and which ignores the plight of so many other women who are also victims of traditional violence. ABOUT THIS BOOK: The shot Count Hieronim Tarnowski fired on his wedding night in 1914 on the eve of the First World War was like a tocsin that sounded the doom of his ancient Polish family. When in August 1939 his daughter Sophie saw blood pouring down the side of her train she foresaw a terrible future and knew her idyllic world would be swept away. Thirty years later when Count Hieronim's British grandson Andrew learned of the death of his mother - the beautiful fragile and abused Chouquette - his sense of a lost identity deepened and he set out to rediscover the world from which he came. The Crossing : The Curious Story of the First Man to Swim the English Channel
Headline UK 2001. Reprint. Medium Trade Paperback. Good. Medium Trade Paperback. 243 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Headline UK 2001. Reprint. CONDITION: This book is in good condition. More specifically: Covers have light creasing. Corners of covers are moderately bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are reasonably tanned and lightly creased. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Swimming the English Channel was once thought to be a feat as impossible as reaching the summit of Everest flying through the air in a plane or walking on the moon. But in August 1875 an obscure ship captain named Matthew Webb became a world hero. He was the first to accomplish what fewer than six hundred people have done since-swim the twenty-one miles of ice-cold jellyfish-infested water from Dover to Calais. The Crossing is the richly detailed story of Webb's swim. Fueled by infusions of cod-liver oil beer coffee and brandy Webb competed for the honor of being first with a swimmer who sported the latest Victorian invention: a thirty-five-pound rubber "survival suit" containing ten days' worth of food and water a headlamp for night paddling an axe for killing swordfish and books to ward off boredom. Even more intriguing is what happened to Webb after he made history. Addicted to fame he hired himself out for ever more desperate swimming feats in pursuit of the money and applause he craved-and died tragically in a crazed attempt to traverse the boiling rapids and quarter-mile whirlpool of the Niagara River. Garbo first met Beaton in Hollywood in March 1932. She flirted and danced with him told him he was pretty and at dawn drove away in her black Packard and brushed aside his pleas to let him see her again. At the time of this meeting they were both involved in turbulent same-sex affairs: Greta with Mercedes de Acosta among whose lovers were Eva Le Gallienne and Marlene Dietrich and Cecil with Peter Watson a wealthy dilettante. When the pair met again 15 years later she asked him to go to bed. For her it was an idle flirtation for him it fuelled his ambition to photograph her to be like her and to marry her. Unsuitable For Publication : Editing Queen Victoria
Black Inc Australia 2013. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Trade Paperback. 208 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Black Inc. Australia 2013. CONDITION: This book is in very good condition. More specifically: Covers have light creasing. Spine is uncreased. . Pages are lightly tanned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: When Queen Victoria died in 1901 two literary gentlemen took on a monumental task: selecting and editing her vast correspondence. The book they produced would influence perceptions of Victoria for generations to come - but it was not the full story. The Queen's two editors Baron Esher and Arthur Benson were deeply eccentric men. Both graduates of Eton they moved in a world of gentlemen's clubs passionate male relationships and hidden political networks. Benson a schoolmaster and author suffered badly from depression. Esher was a shrewd and ambitious politician a powerful puller of royal strings - and wrote incestuous letters to his son. Together they would decide how the Queen was remembered. Based on unprecedented access to the royal archives Unsuitable for Publication reveals how key aspects of Victoria's life were deemed unfit for public consumption: her experience of motherhood her struggle to combine the roles of ruler and wife and her intimate friendships with other royal European women. Yvonne M. Ward reveals how and why these excisions were made and how they have skewed our image of Victoria ever since. Absorbing and original this is a fascinating piece of historical detective work. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Biography & Autobiography; History. ISBN/EAN: 9781863955942. Najaf & Hillman, Robert Mazari
The Rugmaker Of Mazar-E-Sharif

More specifically: Covers have no creasing. Edges of covers have moderate edgewear and corners are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. . Page edges are reasonably browned and slightly soiled. Pages are lightly tanned. Previous owner's name blacked-out. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Beautifully captured and penned by award-winning biographer Robert Hillman this is a compelling story of an exceptional yet 'ordinary' man whose generous spirit natural leadership and desire for peace transcends enormous danger and heartbreak. The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif follows the extraordinary journey of Najaf Mazari from the despair of Afghanistan under the Taliban regime to the flowering of a new life in Australia. Unaware of the fragility of innocence in a country torn by civil war Najaf describes his childhood working as a shepherd an apprentice welder and finally finding his calling as an apprentice rugmaker. Family joy soon turns to tragedy as the war between the Russian forces and the Mujahedin violently thrusts its way into Najaf's life - first his elder brother is killed by a sniper then his family home is destroyed by a stray rocket killing both his younger brother and brother-in-law. Najaf too is badly wounded and is reduced to selling crotcheted socks on a street corner while his injuries slowly heal. Eventually returning to rugmaking Najaf trains himself not to think too far into the future. In 2001 the adult Najaf is captured and tortured by the Taliban. He is forced to flee Afghanistan leaving his wife and child behind to place his life in the hands of people-smugglers bound for an unknown destination. Half way across the world in south-east Asia Najaf and almost a hundred other refugees learn for the first time that they are bound for a country at the bottom of the world called 'Australia'. The Sins of the Father : Joseph P. Kennedy and the Dynasty He Founded
Warner Books USA 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Hardcover. 480 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Warner Books USA 1996. First Edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in near fine condition and comes in near fine dust jacket. More specifically: Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Edges of dust jacket have superficial wear. Dust jacket is unclipped. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition except for clipped front end page. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Based on extensive research and interviews with Kennedy family members and their intimates speaking on the record for the first time it offers an outstanding personal history - and provides shocking revelations about one of the most influential figures of our time. To the mythmakers of his day Joseph P. Kennedy like his glamorous and doomed presidential son Jack led a charmed existence. He was celebrated as the son of an East Boston saloonkeeper who rose to become one of the richest men in the country. He served as the wartime ambassador to Great Britain the chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and the chairman of the United States Maritime Commission. He was also a major legitimate liquor distributor a moviemaker in Hollywood and a master manipulator of the stock market. Yet his fortune estimated at $100 million traced its beginnings to his career as a bootlegger in partnership with organized crime during the Prohibition era. Even more disturbing he was a documented anti-Semite and an appeaser of Adolf Hitler.
