The book is in as-new condition and the inscription is to the grandparents from the other side of the family from the editor Ben Harris McClary. Leather embossed covers are firmly attached with title in gilt on spine all present and still pretty bright along with several decorations. Hinges on both front and rear are starting more so the back hinge. Hand sewn signatures are firmly secure and all pages are present. All illustrations are present-with the exception of the one on page 469--only half of that page is present--it's a page of engravings Colonels in the regiment. All the illustrations have foxing of varying amounts. Most of the tissue guards are present some are not and that has created some foxing to the text before or behind the illustration but the foxing does not obsure any print. A few other pages have a small amount of foxing started by a fingerprint. I found 2 pages missing a corner- pages 33 through 36. My favorite thing in this book is on page 363: a heart felt account of the career and command of Lieutenant-Colonel Clay who was captured and died in Marietta Georgia after having his arm amputated. In the margin in very small letters someone wrote "I was with him--DJ" Overall an solid copy of this book not Ex-Library that should supply many happy reading hours with this 931 page tome. Lee by Jefferson Davis and Alexander Stephens first appeared in magazines shortly after their deaths. Davis' article was published in the North American Review in 1890 and Stephens' study in the Southern Bivouac in 1883. This is the only lengthy treatment of the leader of the Army of Northern Virginia by the President and Vice President of the Southern Confederacy. Edited by Colonel Harold B. Simpson he also adds an Introduction and notes to the text. Colonel Simpson has written numerous books about the Confederacy mostly with its impact on Texas. This is a First Thus edition limited to 1000 copies. The book is covered with red buckram with the title in gold lettering on the spine. 121 pages with a b&w historical photo section from impressive sources. A poem is printed just before the title page written by the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Lee's Farewell address to the Army of Northern Virginia is printed on the rear dust jacket cover. Book is clean and tight no foxing or marking. Dust Jacket is clean but price clipped with a little darkening on cover edges toward flaps. Two small closed tears on back of cover. Now covered with a mylar sleeve. Hill was a talented orator he was the only non Democratic member of the Georgia secession convention 1861 where spoke out against the dissolution of the Union with former opponent Alexander Stephens. After the Civil War he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He later became a Senator from Georgia and served until his death in 1882. He was a well known spokesman for the South. Ben Hill County is named in his honor. This book is in very good condition: some light loss of color to embossed cloth over boards with no breaks to the cloth. Bright old lettering to front cover no lettering on spine. 101 pages portrait of Hill frontis with tissue paper. No foxing no markings tight binding. Dark area on back panel. Scarce. 131 years old. Jonathan Bryan was an important civic and political figure in the Georgia and South Carolina colonies owned a great deal of property in both and owned Brampton Plantation.
