‎Jerome Josephus Schoonover‎

‎1908 Diary of a Successful Farmer in Tiogo County New York Who Writes of His Work His Community and His Family‎

‎Tiogo County New York United States. Good with no dust jacket. 1908. Softcover. On offer is a fine diary written at the turn of the 20th century in rural upstate New York. This 1908 diary belonged to Jerome Josephus Schoonover 1849-1926 a farmer in upstate New York. Specifically he was born and lived his entire life in Tiogo County New York. In 1890 Jerome married Lydia Van Norstran 1858-1951. Lydia worked as a school teacher in the Barton and Tiogo areas. It does not appear that Jerome and Lydia had any children. Schoonover was 59 years old when he wrote this diary. While his entries are primarily related to his farming business they are surprisingly long and newsy for a man’s diary. His entries include information about his and Lydia’s social life community happenings and he keeps a very thorough financial ledger and list of contacts at the back of the diary. Some excerpts follow: “Mellissa Wright dies. Williams wife. Charl to Dan Wiggins draw some ties from the to put them on the flats. To Charls and Dan draw load of stalks & load of oat straw from lower barn for me to bed with at home barn. Nice day for time of year. Sent a letter to J. P. Fragl today an answer to his” Jan 5. “Some cloudy this morning. Lydia took 3 doz eggs to Stonarts 22¢ trade them out. Report is John Holt went to California on 11 o’clock train yesterday left a note for his wife that she could come if she wants 2. She was to Owego come back 12 1/2 the same day don’t know what is the matter or the trouble with them. Charles draw manure and draw up some ties 10 for me” Mar 11. “Hitched fan to platform and Lydia & I went up to Dr. Post. He fix something for my eye and we stay to dinner up there. Charley helped Clarke stook oats we went down to lower garden to get some cucumbers. Pearl Coleman’s sick so Dr. Post went down with his mobile to see her” Aug 18. “Charley drew load of corn for me & DA Wiggins husk is 29 good and 6 poor. Cloudy & colder he draw 6 – 2 for himself and got me a load of corn fodder I pick up some chestnuts” Oct 9. “Lydia & her mother went to the funeral of Mrs. Dan Daily at Barton on morn train. Gibbs finish the price back of the hill. Ground was froze quite hard in morn cloudy all day and cold. Charls Tribe sold his farm to Charles Coleman 1500 dollars Art V went to Smithboro to take an inventory of Bailys store goods” Nov 14. “Sold Fred Martin 5 doz eggs at 86 cents Rode up to store with Dr. Post in his cutter. Really good sleighing cold wind don’t feel very good today” Dec 21. This simple plainly-written diary gives an excellent look at and sense of what life was like in those early years of the 20th century. They paint a picture of a hard but successful life in upstate New York in the years just before the beginning of some of the most momentous changes in life in the United States. Measuring 6.0 inches by 3.0 inches and contains 365 pages. The diary is approximately 80% complete. The cover and binding are in good condition as is the spine. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. Overall Good. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . paperback‎

‎John Nelson Pitts and Minnie R Wells Pitts‎

‎1913 and 1924 Diaries of a Farmer and His Wife Exploring the Male and Female Perspectives of a Tough Life of Work and Community in Wayne County New York‎

‎WAYNE COUNTY NEW YORK BUTLER WOLCOTT. Very Good. Softcover. On offer are two diaries written just over a decade apart by a Wayne County New York farmer and his wife. The pair of diaries present the busy and thankless lives of early 20th century farmers from both the male and female perspective. The authors of these diaries are a husband and wife duo John Nelson Pitts 1875-1961 and Minnie R. Pitts nee Wells 1874-1957. John was born in Butler New York and lived near Wolcott New York for his entire life dying in Huron. Minnie was also born and spent her life in Wayne County. They married in 1904 and did not have any children. The 1913 diary was written by John when the couple is in their late-30s. The 1924 diary was kept by Minnie when they are in their late-40s. John’s 1913 diary details the day-to-day workings of his farm. His entries are short and sweet but very consistent. He writes every single day in 1913 and adds additional notes about his work days in the Memoranda section. Some excerpts of John’s diary follow: “Cloudy & squally. I picked up around the A. M. And we cut wood this P. M. Snowy in the eve” Jan 27 1913. “Fine and cool. I sowed grass seed this A. M. And helped Elmer cut wood P. M. ” Apr 9 1913. “Fine and cool. I the orchard and helped Elmer in P. M. We Minnie and I went and got the new rake. Fine eve” July 15. “Fair and warm. I cut corn today for myself. Minnie helped this P. M. Cool eve” Sept 19 1913. “Fine and cool. I husked corn and chores. Min washed and is cross” Nov 25 1913. Minnie’s 1924 diary is equally as consistent as John’s. She writes every single day and her entries are very detailed. She is the quintessential farmer’s wife and it is plain to see that she is a very busy hard-working woman. Some excerpts follow: “Cold this morn 6 above zero. Bright all day. Cold west wind. We over to G. Fowler’s this A. M. And I washed this P. M. - J cleaned out smoke house” Feb 18 1924. “Snow squalls and flurried all day. Wet and nasty time. I made birthday cake for John on his birthday tomorrow. M and Lewie here in P. M. And I passed a lunch. Fire in furnace felt good” Apr 20 1924. “46 degrees this morn – fair today and cool. I washed picked cucumbers and stuff from garden. Wella boys called at noon. Deetz’s goods came this P. M. 5 truck loads. J. Plowing and drew some hay. Still cool this eve” Sept 4 1924. “Rained all day today – J choring around & he & Chas fixed she to put roosters in – J put hogs in pen in P. M. And I crocheted. Chas laid down in P. M. Dixie cow has a little calf this eve” Sept 30 1924. For a social historian these two diaries give an excellent look at how this couple managed their farm. It also shows very clearly the division of labour and the clear gender roles of the people involved. For a Gender Studies program this would be a very good illustration of how these played out at this time in rural America. The 1913 diary measures 5x3 inches and contains 182 pages. It is 100% complete and is in overall Fair condition. The 1924 diary measures 5.5x2.5 inches and contains 52 pages. It is 100% complete and in overall Good condition save for some staining on the pages. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author . paperback‎

Dark green cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and decoration; gilt-stamped portrait of Kossuth on front cover with the same blind-stamped on back cover; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. All page edges gilt. Pale yellow endpapers. Gift inscription on front free endpaper: "From M. H. Bidwell Jany 1st 1852 to Thomas Hamilton." Faxon Literary Annual and Gift Books 428e. The extreme popularity of Hungarian statesman Lajos Kossuth de Udvard et Kossuthfalva 1802-1894 or Louis Kossuth as he was known in English is indicated by the publisher naming this literary annual for him. ‎Dewey, Henry Sweetser‎

‎Autograph letter signed to Horace C. Hovey‎

‎1912. Near Fine. 2 sheets of paper each written on one side. Henry S. Dewey 1856-1932 was writing from Boston State Hospital on June 10 1912 in response to a letter from Dr. Horace C. Hovey who had apparently written to him while doing research on The Hovey Book: Describing the English Ancestry and American Descendants of Daniel Hovey published in 1913. Dewey was a member of the Boston Common Council from 1885 to 1887 and served in the lower house of the state legislature from 1889 to 1891. He was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1891; appointed a special justice of the municipal court of Boston in 1896 and an associate justice in 1899; and was the chairman of the state board of bar examiners from 1898 until his resignation in March 1903. In 1900 he was appointed judge advocate general on the staff of the commander in chief by Governor Crane. In 1901 he retired from the bench where he had a reputation as a colorful judge to focus on private practice. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of Boston in 1905 Louis D. Brandeis wrote several letters arguing strongly for Dewey's "unfitness." In 1909 his behavior began to be seen as unusual when he represented himself in his suit against the Good Government Association for $76 million for its attacks on him in the 1905 campaign. Several months after losing that suit he spent 12 hours speaking on Boston Common. In Jan. 1912 he was sent to Boston State Hospital having been deemed insane "by one of the overseers of Harvard University" according to this letter. Although he considered it "false imprisonment" he spent the rest of his life at the hospital for the insane at Pierce Farm. In Near Fine Condition: light creases; clean and intact. unknown‎
