Wonderfully and unusually bright and tight first edition of this little beauty one of the most attractive early 20th century Lincoln titles of all -- and one of the few that can claim to be early automotive inspired the front cover headlight a clear reference to the then-new horseless carriage. Front flyleaf bears handsomely inked Christmas 1913 gift inscription from a William S. Crowther born 1843 a prominent Wisconsin businessman and chairman of the Ripon Historical Society considered by some the birthplace of the Republican Party and amateur historian known for having one of the finest Lincoln collections in the country at that time. The first title in this "Headlights" series was devoted to George Washington and it's possible that no further titles appeared. Very good. Mild binding edgewear mainly corners with spine label darkened though internally fine and pristine. A lovely and tight first edition of this handsome R.R. Donnelley & Sons production issued in conjunction with the unveiling of this statue in Fort Wayne Indiana by the noted American sculptor 1885-1966. This handsome copy bears a choice photograph addition: Tipped to the inner flyleaf is a fine original likely sole surviving print of an 8" X 10" glossy black-and-white photograph of a smiling Manship alongside a small-scale version of his equestrian statue of Grant Ulysses S. Grant with Bruce Catton 1899-1978 admiring it from one side and Civil War authority/radio broadcasting innovator Carl Haverlin 1899-1985 doing the same from the other side; when the full-size version surrounded by soldiers hoisting cannons was cast in 1922 it cost $250000 making it the most expensive statue in the United States. This small casting was apparently made during the Civil War centennial circa 1960 for the interior of Grant's Tomb. Haverlin served as president of music licensing pioner BMI Broadcast Music Inc. and the photographer who took this image Hy Reiter served with BMI's publicity and promotion department. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead Findley born 1921 thanks his old friend for campaign help -- in part: "Thanks for your generous support in the campaign and equally for the generous words in your letter. In fact if you don't mind it would please me to have the privilege of showing your letter to others as opportunities arise." Signed simply "Paul" in sloppy blue fineline. Nice copy of the elaborate prospectus for Ida M. Tarbell's "The Life of Abraham Lincoln: Drawn from original sources and containing many Speeches Letters and Telegrams hitherto unpublished" first published in 1900 and reissued by Lincoln History Society in four volumes in1902. Definitely uncommon. Laid in is an 8" X 4" pale blue printed order form for this set $10 for "English Ribbed Cloth" $14 for "Three-Quarter Leather" and also a 4 3/4" X 7 3/4" Typed Letter Signed from this company's registrar W.R. Caldwell bearing his rubberstamped signature 1 April 1903. Addressed to E.P. Farr. Very good. Blue-ink mimeographed sales pitch letter for this set. Apparently this publisher reprinted this prospectus each time they reprinted this set others bear the date 1903 1907 1908 and 1909 on the facsimile of the Tarbell title page but this 1902 is the earliest and represents the year the LHS first published their edition. A tight handsome first edition of this commemorative piece House Document No. 523 of the 87th Congress 2d Session. Iowa representative Schwengel 1906-93 chaired the committee that arranged it and provides the remarks describing the ceremonies. He handsomely signs and inscribes the front flyleaf in black ink: "Especially for / Carl Tolpo / with every good wish / as he continues to read & / relate the story of Lincoln / in sculpture / Fred Schwengel / June 20 -- 1963." Carl Tolpo 1901-76 was a noted sculptor and painter best remembered for his busts of Lincoln. This copy has been extra-illustrated: Often appearing in these pages are thanks to Paul J. Sedgwick chairman of the District of Columbia Civil War Centennial Commission and Paul H. Gantt president of the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia and a letter from each has been tipped to the inner flyleaves. Opposite the title page is a Typed Letter Signed from Sedgwick 1896-1973 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1962 February 26. Addressed to noted Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On "District of Columbia Civil War Centennial Commission" letterhead Sedgwick chats cordially about all manner of centennial events. Signed simply "Paul" in black ballpoint. Opposite the contents page is a Typed Letter Signed from Gantt 1907-79 1p 8½" X 11" Washington DC 1962 March 5. Same recipient. Very good.
