Juillet 1950 : Georges Simenon s'installe avec sa femme Denyse et leur fils John à « Shadow rock Farm » un ranch situé à Lakeville dans le Connecticut. Il y restera cinq années pendant lesquelles il va écrire certains de ses grands « romans durs » outre Le Temps d'Anaïs citons Une vie comme neuve La Mort de Belle Les Frères Rico L'Escalier de fer Feux rouges L'Horloger d'Everton Le Grand Bob Les Témoins ainsi que quelques-uns des meilleurs Maigret : Maigret au Picratt's Maigret et la Grande Perche Maigret et l'Homme du banc Maigret se trompe ou Maigret et la Jeune Morte. Le premier livre qu'il y rédige savourant la douceur de son nouveau mariage avec Denyse et les joies de la paternité est Le Temps d'Anaïs trois mois après leur installation ; et ce n'est pas un hasard s'il situe ce roman à Ingrannes - pensant même nommer le roman L'Auberge d'Ingrannes - un lieu où Simenon avait emménagé presque jour pour jour quinze ans auparavant : nous sommes fin 1934 et Tigy et Georges Simenon veulent quitter le château de Marsilly. Ils parcourent la France à la recherche de la perle rare en vain mais repèrent bientôt une abbaye attenant à un petit château la Cour-Dieu au coeur de la forêt. Ils logent pendant ce séjour à l'auberge toute proche du village d'Ingrannes. Simenon ne restera à la Cour-Dieu que le temps d'écrire trois romans Faubourg Quartier nègre et Les Demoiselles de Concarneau et des nouvelles. Trois années dans l'Orléanais où il arpente le territoire rencontre ses habitants et épouse la géographie locale afin de chercher la matière de son oeuvre. Il sera également séduit par ses balades en bord de Loire et notamment par la ville de Meung-sur-Loire où il installera la résidence secondaire de Maigret : le commissaire aimera venir s'y reposer et pêcher. La forêt d'Orléans et l'auberge d'Ingrannes lui reviennent en mémoire quinze plus tard quand il rédige son premier roman dans la nouvelle maison de Lakeville. Le manuscrit autographe complet est rédigé entièrement au crayon d'une écriture fine nerveuse et sûre rapide et très serrée sans marge occupant toute la page au recto de 51 feuillets de deux blocs de papier vélin avec son feuillet de papier ligné. Les manuscrits entièrement autographes de Georges Simenon adepte de la machine à écrire sont rares. Celui-ci a été rédigé en quelques jours du 24 octobre au 1er novembre presque d'une seule traite et presque sans corrections qui confirment et démontrent sa grande maîtrise. Un dactylogramme de 172 feuillets a été composé dans la foulée - Simenon avait pour habitude de dactylographier le chapitre du jour chaque lendemain matin avec beaucoup de changements laissant ses manuscrits fort peu corrigés et de premier jet. Une enveloppe cachetée jaune 165 x 244 mm lui a servi comme à l'accoutumée de conducteur où figure la liste des personnages du roman en cours de rédaction. Elle est ici exceptionnellement conservée. Seulement une vingtaine d'enveloppes de ce type sont conservées au Fonds Simenon de Liège principalement pour des manuscrits d'ouvrages parus chez Fayard et Gallimard : La Veuve Couderc Les Demoiselles de Concarneau Touriste de bananes Le Suspect Malempin Le Haut Mal Les Rescapés du Télémaque Le Relais d'Alsace Quartier nègre Le Passager du Polarlys L'Outlaw Oncle Charles s'est enfermé La Marie du port Le Locataire Il pleut bergère. Seules deux enveloppes sont connues pour la période américaine : celle-ci et une autre pour le manuscrit de La Mort de Belle strictement identique sur le même papier. Les autres romans directement dactylographiés ne les ont pas. Pendant plus de trente ans l'enveloppe jaune sera rituelle dans le travail de l'écrivain lorsqu'il débute un roman : première trace de son travail il y inscrit les premiers éléments concrets qui l'aident à appréhender ses personnages et à guider son intrigue. Elle est ici titrée L'Auberge d'Ingrannes Le Temps d'Anaïs qui prouve bien que Simenon hésitait depuis le début entre ces deux titres. Elle porte également les mentions d'Orléans Vitry-aux-Loges - commune de la forêt d'Orléans non loin d'Ingrannes. Suivent au recto quelques personnages leurs âges et adresses « romanesques » et d'abord le « héros » du roman « Albert Bauche 28 ans 27 dans le livre quai d'Auteuil marié à Fernande . » « Serge Nicolas la victime dans le roman directeur de la C.I.F. Compagnie internationale du Film Champs-Élysées . Raoul et Antoinette Bauche les parents d'Albert droguerie en gros à Montpellier. Meurt à 52 ans. 1928 52 ans 19 ans pour Albert . etc. ». Au verso une longue liste d'autres personnages - une trentaine - avec quelques autres notes sur leurs filiations. Ils ne seront pas tous caractérisés dans le roman. Le texte de L'Auberge d'Ingrannes - sous ce titre - sera d'abord publié en feuilleton dans Le Populaire de Paris du 19 février au 4 avril 1951 puis la même année aux Presses de la Cité sous le titre Le temps d'Anaïs.
