Cyril Connolly: The Life and Times of England's Most Controversial Literary Critic
New York NY: St. Martin's Press 1996. First U.S. edition stated. First printing stated. Hardcover. Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling. xiii 1 466 p. Illustrations. Notes. Select Bibliography. Index. From Wikipedia: "Cyril Vernon Connolly 10 September 1903 26 November 1974 was an English intellectual literary critic and writer. He was the editor of the influential literary magazine Horizon 1940 1949 and wrote Enemies of Promise 1938 which combined literary criticism with an autobiographical exploration of why he failed to become the successful author of fiction that he had aspired to be in his youth.Connolly's only novel The Rock Pool 1936 is a satirical work describing a covey of dissolute drifters at an end of season French seaside resort which was based on his experiences in the south of France. It was initially accepted by a London publishing house but they changed their minds. Faber and Faber was one of the publishers who rejected it and so Connolly took it to Jack Kahane who published it in Paris in 1936. Connolly followed this up with a book of non-fiction Enemies of Promise 1938 the second half of which is autobiographical. In it he attempted to explain his failure to produce the literary masterpiece that he and others believed he should have been capable of writing.Connolly did his best work as a critic. Like Edmund Wilson in the United States he wielded enormous influence. An astute and often witty commentator with great gifts for often cruel mimicry Connolly informed the thinking and attitudes of a generation. In The Unquiet Grave he writes: "Approaching forty sense of total failure: .Never will I make that extra effort to live according to reality which alone makes good writing possible: hence the manic-depressiveness of my style which is either bright cruel and superficial; or pessimistic; moth-eaten with self-pity." As editor of Horizon Connolly gave a platform to a wide range of distinguished and emerging writers. He was robust in his criticism of the decline of the Mandarin and perhaps too effusive in his welcome of the New Vernacular. Kenneth Tynan writing in the March 1954 Harper's Bazaar praised Connolly's style as 'one of the most glittering of English literary possessions. '" From an on-line posting: "e Fisher is the author of several critically acclaimed biographies including NOEL COWARD and CYRIL CONNOLLY. He was educated at Oxford University and his writings have appeared in numerous publications including The Times The Financial Times and Punch. Between 2005 and 2006 he was a Fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at New York Public Library. His most recent book is HART CRANE: A Life Yale 2002 a definitive biography of the American poet. Clive is currently writing the authorized biography of the novelist photographer critic and cultural impresario Carl Van Vechten." St. Martin's Press hardcover

Wood is best remembered as one of the key founders of the American Legion veterans' organization in 1919. Eric Fisher Wood was born in New York City in 1889. As a boy Wood was educated in private schools. He later enrolled at Yale University in New Haven Connecticut from which he graduated with degrees in Economics English and a PhD degree in civil engineering. Wood did additional post-graduate course work studying architecture at Columbia University in New York City as well as the cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. At the time of the eruption of World War I Wood was an American in Paris. Wood volunteered his services at the American Embassy in France as an attache joining the Embassy staff to help handle the greatly increased workload that was associated with the war. Later Wood would join the American Ambulance Corps serving in that capacity for a few months. Wood maintained a journal during his time in Europe which he published in book form in 1915 as The Note-book of an Attache: Seven Months in the War Zone. Wood subsequently returned to the United States where he became Vice-President of the National Security League an organization dedicated to fostering so-called "military preparedness" in the face of the vast and spreading European War. Wood was also involved from a year from 1915 to 1916 as part of the Plattsburgh Training Camp Executive Committee. He found time to publish a second book during this interval dealing with the topic of military preparedness The Writing on the Wall. In 1917 Wood returned to Europe where he served in the British Army with the rank of Major. In this capacity he was wounded at Arras on April 9 1917. Follow American entry into the war in 1917 Wood was commissioned as a Major in the U.S. Army on August 14 1917 and served as assistant chief of staff for the 88th Infantry Division. Wood was wounded again this time by poison gas during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive that same fall. By the end of the hostilities in November 1918 Wood had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. On February 15 1919 Wood was ordered by Gen. John J. Pershing to join with 19 of his fellows in a special committee headed by Theodore Roosevelt Jr. given the task of providing a set of recommendations aimed at curbing the serious problem of declining morale. A series of proposals resulted from the day-long session including elimination of restrictive regulations organization of additional athletic events and recreational opportunities and the expansion of leave time and entertainment programs. Lt. Col. Roosevelt had an additional purpose unbeknownst to Wood however and in the evening the group retired to an Allied Officers Club where the eldest son of the former President unveiled his proposal for a new veterans' society a group which would ultimately emerge as the American Legion. A provisional executive committee of four people emerged from the February 15 "Roosevelt dinner" headed by Roosevelt himself who was to return to the United States and obtain his military discharge when able and then to gather assistants and promote the idea of the new veterans' organization among demobilized troops there. Roosevelt's close associate in the project George A. White who was to travel France touring the camps of the AEF explaining the idea in person. The European center of operations was to be manned by Wood together with former Ohio Congressman Ralph D. Cole. The pair were to establish a central office and to maintain contact. LAUD William; FISHER John
A Relation of the Conference Between William Laud Late Lord Arch-bishop of Canterbury and Mr. Fisher the Jesuit By the Command of King James of ever Blessed Memory. With An Answer to such Exceptions as A. C. takes against it
London: William Whitwood 1687. The Fourth Edition Revised. Leather bound. Fair. 14 253 11 p. 30 cm. Full leather. Boards worn and edges taped. Ink inscriptions and stamps on front endpapers and title page. Worm holes in bottom corners up to p. 40. Bottom corner out of a rear endpaper. Small hole in p. B2 of Dedication.

William Laud was Archibishop of Canterbury during the reign of Charles I 1625-1649. Shortly after Charles's succession Laud presented him with a list of England's ministers divided into "O" for orthodox and "P" for Puritan. This began a feud that led to the persecution of many Puritans and the beheading of Laud himself once the Puritans came to power. Laud was also at odds with Catholics as may be seen from this conference or discussion with "Fisher the Jesuit." Fisher was often imprisoned but lived into old age and died a natural death of cancer in about 1642. His name was brought up at Laud's trial one of the accusations against Laud being that he had protected Fisher and secured his release from prison. "A.C." mentioned on the title page probably stands for "A Catholic." William Whitwood hardcover
