‎"SARTRE, JEAN-PAUL.‎

‎La Putain respectueuse. - [PRESENTATION-COPY]‎

‎Paris, Nagel, 1946. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Uncut copy. The spine shows light wear, with a small tear to lower front hinge, but remains fully intact. The corners are slightly bumped, and there is minor edge wear to the covers. Internally clean and well-preserved throughout.‎

‎First edition, presentation-copy, of one of the most significant plays. Inscribed and signed by Sartre to front free end-paper: ""Les extrêmes se touchent toujours. / C’est pourquoi je dédie / cet ouvrage à Madame / Tage Hansen, laquelle n’est / ni putain ni respectueuse. / Paul S."" Jean-Paul Sartre's La Putain respectueuse is one of the most significant plays in his vast literary oeuvre, first published in 1946, just after World War II, during a time of profound social and political change. This play is not only a compelling dramatic work but also a profound exploration of existentialist philosophy, a hallmark of Sartre’s writing. Sartre masterfully weaves his philosophical ideas into La Putain respectueuse, using it to examine the complex intersection of race, class, and moral integrity—themes that resonate powerfully both in their historical context and in contemporary discussions. Sartre was inspired in part by his relationship with Simone de Beauvoir, a prominent philosopher and writer. Their intellectual partnership greatly influenced Sartre's exploration of themes such as gender and morality, as Beauvoir's work often challenged traditional notions of femininity and societal roles. This context deepens the understanding of Sartre's characters and moral dilemmas. Set in the deeply segregated American South, the play offers a sharp critique of racial injustice, centering on a Black man falsely accused of rape. This accusation reflects the pervasive systemic racism of the time, which remains largely unchallenged by society. The protagonist, Lizzie, a prostitute, finds herself at the heart of a moral and ethical dilemma. Her testimony could either condemn an innocent man or align with the corrupt powers that seek to manipulate her. Lizzie’s struggle embodies a broader existential question: How can one maintain individual freedom and moral integrity when society pressures them to comply with injustice? In La Putain respectueuse, Sartre’s meditations on freedom and responsibility come to life. Lizzie’s plight encapsulates the existential challenge of living authentically—staying true to oneself and one’s values—while being caught in the web of societal expectations and moral compromise. Sartre’s existentialist philosophy argues that individuals are ""condemned to be free,"" meaning that freedom carries the unavoidable weight of choice. Lizzie’s decision becomes a powerful commentary on the human condition, the burden of ethical choices, and the often painful consequences of moral courage. Beyond its philosophical depth, La Putain respectueuse stands as an exemplary representation of Sartre’s ability to merge political commentary with dramatic intensity. His critique of systemic racism and class exploitation remains highly relevant, offering both a historical reflection and a mirror to contemporary issues of inequality and oppression. This work remains a cornerstone of French theatre and existentialist thought, emblematic of Sartre’s enduring intellectual legacy. La Putain respectueuse continues to offer profound insights into the social conflicts of its time while maintaining a timeless relevance in its exploration of the human condition.‎

‎Paris, 1963. 8vo. Issues 209 & 210 of ""Les Temps Modernes"" in the original printed red and black wrappers. Minor sunning to spines and edges, but otherwise in near mint condition. No 210 slightly bigger than no 209. (No. 209:) pp. 577 + (no. 210): pp. 769-834. [Entire issues: pp. (577) - 768 (+ 8 pp. of advertisements) + pp. (769) - 959 + (1 p, ""Note de la Rédaction), (8 pp. of advertisements) + 2 photographic plates in the text.‎

‎The rarely seen true first printing of Sartre's monumental biographical work, which counts as one of his major achievements and which was immediately hailed as a literary success. In the work, which describes his youth and analyzes his literary development, Sartre distances himself from writing and bids his adieu to literature. The major part of the work was written in 1954 and was rewritten and altered in early 1963, which accounts for the many chronological contradictions, the point of reference being sometimes 1953, sometimes 1963.The second printing of the work is that from Gallimard, 1964, which is usually described as the first edition of the work, but which is in fact merely the first edition in book form. This first printing from 1963 constitutes the work in its entirety, and the 1964-version only differs very slightly from it. On 28th of November 1963 an extract of the work appeared in ""L'Express"". In November of 1964 (when the work first appeared in book form), he refused the Nobel Prize for Literature awarded for his work, described as ""rich in ideas and filled with the spirit of freedom and the quest for truth, has exerted a far-reaching influence on our age.""Contat & Rybalka 63/383 a). See also this reference for more on the work and extracts from interviews with Sartre about it (pp. (385)-87).‎

‎Les Mouches. Drame en trois actes. - [ONE OF 15 COPIES - PRESENTATION-COPY - CENSORED BY THE GERMAN MILITARY ADMINISTRATION]‎

‎(Paris), Gallimard, (1943). Bound with the original printed wrappers, also the backstrip, in a contemporary (no later than 1955) beautiful, very elegant grey half morocco binding with five raised bands and gilt title to spine (Gemet&Plumbelle). A beautiful, near mint copy.‎

‎The seminal first edition, presentation-copy for Claude Gallimard, one of 15 large paper copies, of Sartre's groundbreaking play, ""The Flies"", which constitutes his very first play as well as the only one he himself characterized as a ""drama"". The first edition appeared in 15 copies on pur fil and 525 regular copies. The 15 copies on pur fil are not numbered (presumably because the issue was so small and there were no other copies on fine paper made), but the back wrapper states (""EXEMPLAIRE SUR PUR FIL/ 60 francs""). ""Gallimard, [1943]. 145 pages. 15 exemplaires pur fil et 525 exemplaires reliés Héliona dont l'achevé d'imprimer est de décembre 1942. Volume mis en vente en avril 1943."" (Contat & Rybalka, p. 88).The magnificent presentation-inscription which reads as thus: ""A Claude Gallimard/ en hommage amical de/ JPSartre"" (""Gallimard"" is vague, as someone (presumably Gallimard himself, or his family, when selling the copy) has tried to erase it, as is often done with identifiable names when trying to hide the provenance, but it is still fully legible) is for Sartre's publisher, Claude Gallimard (1914-1991), the son of Gaston Gallimard. Claude Gallimard worked in the family publishing company since 1937.""The Flies"" counts as Sartre's most important play as well as one of his most important works. It is a dramatical exposition of his central philosophical themes and a main exponent for his existentialism. As such it is also one of the most important plays of the 20th century. It is in 1943, with ""The Flies"" and with ""l'Étre et le Néant"" (same year) that Sartre's ideas become fully developed, and of the two, ""The Flies"" had, by far, the greatest impact on contemporary thought, philosophy, and literature. The work thus constitutes one of the most important and influential works of the period. Following its premiere (June 3rd 1943) in the ""Théatre de la Cité"" in Paris, the play was censored by the German military administration. Almost immediately after the war, the play was performed again, in Germany as well as in France. Contat & Rybalka: 43/35 (pp. 88-89).‎

‎Nekrassov. Pièce en huit tableaux. - [NEKRASSOV - BOUND BY MIGUET]‎

‎Paris, Gallimard, (1956). 8vo. Bound uncut with the original wrappers, also the back-strip, in a beautiful elegant red morocco binding with red and black patterned paper to boards. Top-edge gilt. Title, author and year in gilt lettering to spine, the title vertically in large capitals. Inside of front board with a gilt super ex-libris. Binding signed at bottom of inside of front board: ""C. et J-P. Miguet"". Housed in a Black and red paper slip-case with red morocco edges. An excellent, near mint copy.‎

‎First edition in book form of the political play that Sartre himself called "" ""The Respectful Prostitute"" on the level of politics"" (Sartre, ""France-Observateur"", June 9, 1955), by other contemporaries called a ""crypto-communist"" work, or even worse ""a farce in eight tableaus"".Hors commerce-copy (marked ""H.C."") of the regular issue. The printing in book form was preceded by the appearance of it in ""les Temps modernes, no. 114-15, 116, & 117, June-September of 1955. ""Nekrassov"" is Sartre's response to the anti-communist sentiments found in the post-second world war era, personified in the American senator Joseph McCarthy. The play is a political comedy written in the form of a playwright that demonstrates the difficulty of maintaining personal freedom in a society obsessed with the threat of communism. The well esteemed critic wrote in his review of Nekrassov: ""[It] reveals him as the best comic talent of our times."" Almost none of the contemporary reviews from the critics of the center and rightist press were favourable, though. ""[A] certain grim rejoicing was apparent in the columns of these mourners as they celebrated the still-birth of ""Nekrassov""."" (Neal Oxenhandler, ""Nekrassov and the Critics, in: Yale French Studies, No. 16, 1955, p.8). Although ""Nekrassov"" has not been performed on the stage in Paris since 1955, in the literature to come, the play has achieved the role as one of the best pieces Sartre ever wrote.

‎s. l. Paris: S. n. Paysage dimanche 1945. Fine. S. n. Paysage dimanche s. l. • Paris s. d. 1945 11.50 x 22 cm 3 pages 1/2 in-4 Autograph manuscript by the author 3½ pages octavo published in the October 21 1945 issue no. 19 of Paysage dimanche. Complete recto-verso manuscript in very dense handwriting with numerous deletions corrections and additions. Literary chronicle published on the occasion of the publication of the first two volumes of Jean-Paul Sartre's trilogy Les chemins de la liberté: ""L'Age de raison"" and ""Le Sursis"". Together with the complete typescript with one deletion and one autograph correction by the author. When this chronicle appeared in autumn 1945 Maurice Blanchot and Jean-Paul Sartre had already demonstrated their mutual interest in each other's respective work in articles that were sometimes critical sometimes laudatory always attentive. Similarly if Les chemins de la liberté aroused Blanchot's admiration it was essentially through the philosopher's skillful use of the influence of two monuments of Anglo-Saxon literature Virginia Woolf and John Dos Passos: « Ce qui nous paraît frappant c'est le caractère d'œuvre d'art qu'en reçoit le livre œuvre extrêmement composée calculée avec un souci infiniment sûr des effets où la confusion reste claire où le désordre est perfection et telle qu'on y reconnaît sans cesse la présence de l'écrivain le plus lucide capable de tout obtenir du langage dont il est maître. » ""What strikes us as remarkable is the character of a work of art that the book receives an extremely composed work calculated with infinitely sure concern for effects where confusion remains clear where disorder is perfection and such that one constantly recognizes the presence of the most lucid writer capable of obtaining everything from the language he masters."" But this ""Roman de Sartre"" was above all an opportunity for Blanchot to raise the question of the links between literature and politics on which the two men would have great difficulty agreeing in the following decades. » ""It is undeniable that Sartre's art reaches its greatest power when he describes the engulfing of consciousness by the things that haunt and overwhelm them and from which they flow like a paste full of odors. The world he perceives is one of metamorphosis but this metamorphosis is not a change of form it is not the transformation of one being into another being even of a man into vermin; it goes further it is irreparable for it is consciousness itself that becomes material it is thought that freezes into a sticky viscous substance without contour without appearance a sad and vague interior that we cannot grasp and which nevertheless as such continues desperately to think. Such is the universe into which we are thrown as long as we do not try to reclaim it through an action that commits us."" The third volume of Les Chemins de la liberté not yet published left little doubt in Blanchot's eyes as to its content; and he summarized somewhat sarcastically: « Ce qui suivra est facile à S. n.[ Paysage dimanche] unknown‎

‎Paris: France Dimanche 1948. Evenly toned; a few incidental wrinkles and a small bit of shallow wear to two corners. Single leaf approx. 5-1/4 X 8-1/4 in. printed on both sides. Broadsheet entry blank for a contest sponsored by the tabloid journal "France Dimanche" asking for audience response to the film by Jean Delannoy based on a screenplay by Jean-Paul Sartre. The film which premiered at the Cannes Festival in 1947 tells the story of a man and a woman who though unknown to each are destined to be together as life partners. They themselves only meet after both have died but are given a second chance at life if they can return and realize their love in the real world. Once back in life however they find themselves absorbed in unresolved matters from their previous lives and fail in their mission. The contest asks readers of "France Dimanche" two questions: 1. would you have done as Eve and Pierre why or why not and 2. should Jean-Paul Sartre be condemned or offered a chair at the Academie An intriguing ephemeron from a moment of intellectual ferment in post-war Paris.
