Very good. <p>RARE.<p>The Danish-American artist & illustrator Ludvig Sandoe Ipsen 1840-1920 served in the Danish Army engineer corps after training as an architect. Ipsen immigrated to Boston in 1867 where he designed and illustrated book covers book plates and posters as well as book illustrations. He illustrated works by Longfellow Sir Walter Scott Hawthorne and Twain. Ipsen is perhaps best known for his illustrations of the 1886 edition of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "Sonnets from the Portuguese".
