A truly spectacular copy.<br /> <br /> First English edition of this collection of Danish tales and verse selected and translated by Anne Bushby d.1875 who had known Anderson since 1847. Busby believed that Anderson's work surpassed the category of children's literature. In this translation she offered a new take on the source material by adapting the language for a Victorian British audience Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen. Many of the stories were first published in New Monthly Magazine but were compiled for this volume as a celebration of Danish literature. Hans Christian Andersen often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen 2 April 1805 4 August 1875 was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays travelogues novels and poems Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children: his stories express themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen's fairy tales of which no less than 3381 works have been translated into more than 125 languages have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness readily accessible to children but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes" "The Little Mermaid" "The Nightingale" "The Snow Queen" "The Ugly Duckling" "Thumbelina" and many others. Wikipedia Signe Toksvig 18911983 was a Danish writer. Her articles were published in the New York Times the Nation The Atlantic and other periodicals. She also published several books including biographies of Hans Christian Andersen and Emanuel Swedenborg. Her life and work and obstacles she encountered has also been the focus of scholarship by others. All her writings were in English. At age 14 Toksvig emigrated with her family from Denmark to the United States. She graduated from Cornell in 1916 and then worked as an assistant editor at The New Republic. In 1918 she married the journal's founder Francis Hackett an Irish writer and literary critic. They moved to Ireland in 1926 and lived there until 1937 when they moved to Denmark. It is a re-creation of the limited edition first published in 1893 by George Allen London. The tales were translated by H. Oskar Sommer and it included 100 black and white illustrations by Arthur Gaskin. Arthur Joseph Gaskin RBSA 1862 - 1928 was a preeminent English illustrator painter teacher and designer of jewellery and enamelwork. Gaskin and his wife Georgie Gaskin were members of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Craftsmen which sought to apply the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement across the decorative arts. Like many of the group Gaskin studied at the Birmingham School of Art under Edward R. Taylor and later taught there Wikipedia. The original book as well as this facsimile includes over 100 of Andersen's writings including such famous stories as "The Ugly Duckling" "The Emperor's New Suit" "The Little Match Girl " and "The Little Mermaid." Gaskin's charming illustrations complement the tales. <br /> <br /> Bound by Kingsport Book of Tennessee in cream cowhide leather imported from Italy with beautiful gilt titling and illustration to front covers and gilt titling to spine. New York: Doubleday Doran 1924. First Edition and a copy with Excellent Provenance. Presented by Henriette Wyeth Hand to Anne Wyeth McCoy. With 12 very fine tipped-in color plates numerous black & white illustrations as frontispieces to each tale and additional decoration throughout all by Kay Nielsen. 4to in the original black cloth featuring a black metallic silver and orange pictorial pastedown on the upper cover the spine lettered and decorated in silver with decorative endpapers. 280 pp. the upper pastedown pristine the silver lettering and decorations on the spine with some flaking as is unfortunately the norm. FIRST EDITION OF THE QUARTO PRINTING. This collection of sixteen tales was initiated by Nielsen in 1912 though it was not published until 1924. Andersen's beloved tales were an excellent inspiration for Nielsen who produced some of his finest images for this title.<br> Sixteen of Andersen's tales are included. Interestingly 'The Little Mermaid' is not included among them. In 1937 Nielsen went to work for Walt Disney. He was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art and he contributed artwork for many Disney films. Around 1940 he produced concept paintings for a proposed adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid'. The film however was not made within Nielsen's lifetime. London: Hodder and Stoughton 1924. First Edition with the Rare "Announcement" of the Kay Nielsen Exhibition at The Leicester Galleries included at the front of the volume. With 12 very fine tipped-in color plates numerous black & white illustrations as frontispieces to each tale and additional decoration throughout all by Kay Nielsen. 4to in the original black cloth featuring a black metallic silver and orange pictorial pastedown on the upper cover the spine lettered and decorated in silver with decorative endpapers. 280 pp. A very fine copy internally as pristine and perfect as new the cloth very bright and fresh with no fading or wear the upper pastedown pristine the silver lettering and decorations on the spine with some flaking as is unfortunately the norm. FIRST EDITION OF THE QUARTO PRINTING. This collection of sixteen tales was initiated by Nielsen in 1912 though it was not published until 1924. Andersen's beloved tales were an excellent inspiration for Nielsen who produced some of his finest images for this title.<br> Sixteen of Andersen's tales are included. Interestingly 'The Little Mermaid' is not included among them. In 1937 Nielsen went to work for Walt Disney. He was renowned at the Disney studio for his concept art and he contributed artwork for many Disney films. Around 1940 he produced concept paintings for a proposed adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid'. The film however was not made within Nielsen's lifetime.
