Ditte: Girl Alive tells the story of an illegitimate child of Danish laborers and her struggle to rise abover her poverty and wretched station in life. In many ways Ditte's story mirrors that of the protagonist in Nexo's four-part masterpiece Pelle the Conqueror. Basis for the classic 1946 film Ditte Daughter of Man directed by Bjarne Henning-Jensen and starring Tove Maes in the title role. The concluding volume of Nexo's major work a Danish proletarian novel chronicling the life and career of a great modern labor leader. Includes for example the following: Spain / The White City / Seville / Córdoba / Gibraltar / Tangiers / San Antonio / The Gypsies / The Bullfight etc. Martin Andersen Nexø 26 June 1869 – 1 June 1954 was a Danish author. He was one of the authors in the Modern Breakthrough movement in Danish art and literature. He was a socialist throughout his life and during the second world war moved to the Soviet Union and afterwards to Dresden in East Germany. Wikipedia After finishing he worked as a teacher in a Grundtvigian folk school until he became tubercular and went to Spain and Italy to convalesce. Thereafter he concentrated on writing. On his stay in Spain he wrote Soldage/ Days in the Sun. Nexø's first novels are in the decadent pessimistic manner common around the turn of the century. His mature authorship began with the four-volume Pelle the Conqueror 1906-1910 and from this time on Nexø devoted his writing to the awakening proletariat the existence of which had gone virtually unnoticed in Danish literature. The title figure of Nexø's other masterpiece the five-volume Ditte Child of Man 1917-1921 is Pelle's female counterpart who symbolizes the situation of the proletarian woman. Today Nexø is acknowledged as one of Denmark's finest realistic storytellers the only modern Danish writer who has an undisputed place in world literature. Encyclopedia hardcover
