General wear. Overall sound. Very good. <br/><br/>Draft production binder used in creation and revision of a 1929 catalogue of electric lighting fixtures and accessories belonging to Lauritz W. Andersen industrial designer and owner of The Waterbury Metal Wares Co. Andersen was a prominent inventor and designer of electrical socketry in the early 20th century; his career can be traced through patent office records where over 60 items bear his name. He was with the firm of Plume and Atwood for approximately 25 years leaving in 1915 to form Waterbury. The firm specialized in fixtures and other components for lamps and lighting — including earlier methods candles lanterns. Sconces candelabras floor and desk lamps as well as more specialized piano drafting much in evidence. The clear professional photographs as well as sketches and notes within the binder provide a thorough glimpse into the early industrial design and marketing of electrical lighting. As has been promised in the preface to Part I. this glossary includes the vocabulary of the whole text of Dhammapada and he has upon the whole done his best to make it as complete as possible. It has been his aim by this to supply the young student with a sufficient help for the first years� study until he will be able to work independently and he has therefore above all striven to arrange the materials so that every passage in the texts which might be supposed to present even the slightest difficulty to the beginner should not be passed by in silence. Whether he has succeeded in his explanations in such cases where he differs from the usual interpretation he must leave to his critics to judge of. Before using the book his readers are earnestly requested to insert the corrections and additions given on the last pages into the text of both parts. About the Author :-Dines Andersen was born in 26th December 1861 and died in 28th March 1940. At the University of Copenhagen he devoted himself to the study of philology primarily as represented by the classical languages. It was however as a Plist that he won a reputation. His treatment of the texts progressed steadily. In 1891 he issued a translation of selected Buddhist legends from the Rasavhin. A couple of years after the appearance of the first part of the Reader he was appointed professor of Indian philology in the University of Copenhagen holding this professorship from 1903 to 1927. But his university duties did not divert his interest from what would according to his previous publications be his actual aim viz. the great badly needed Pli Dictionary. Limited to 500 numbered copies on Papier du Japon signed by Edmund Dulac this being #487.<br/><br/>Quarto 11 3/8 x 8 3/4 inches; 290 x 224 mm. 172 pp. Title-page decoratively printed in red black green and yellow. Twenty-eight mounted color plates each framed with turquoise green flowery borders and titled tissue-guards. Original front wrapper decorated in green and gilt bound in.<br/><br/>Contemporary Publishers full mottled calf covers with triple rule borders and decorative corner pieces spine with five raised bands decoratively stamped in gilt and with a maroon morocco lettering label. All edges stained red marbled endpapers. Expert and almost invisible repair to rear joint tiny one inch crack at top of front joint. An excellent copy.<br/><br/>"28 Dulac colour plates mounted on vellum framed with turquoise green flowery borders; covered with tissue guards imprinted with black captions. Also special turquoise green borders for title page and snowflake border designs for text pages. 5 different dark green initials decorated with turquoise surrounds; small medallion designs for limitation and printer's pages 7 designs for chapter titles 9 tailpiece designs. Price when issued: full leather 100 fr." Stories from Hans Andersen. With Illustrations by Edmund Dulac. London: Hodder & Stoughton 1911.<br/><br/>Edition de Luxe limited to 100 numbered copies printed on Japanese Vellum and signed by the artist this copy being no. 20. Large quarto 12 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches; 309 x 249 mm. viii 250 2 pp. Mounted color frontispiece with descriptive tissue guard printed in black and twenty-seven mounted color plates included in pagination. Plates framed with thick pale green line border and accompanied by guard leaves printed in pale green with stylized pineapples on the recto and border of snowflakes above descriptive caption on the verso. Text pages with pale green snowflake borders at top and bottom. All leaves framed with double pale green lines.<br/><br/>Original dark chocolate brown pigskin pictorially stamped with three-peacock design and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine with Hodder & Stoughton gilt-stamped at spine foot. Top edge gilt others uncut. Endpapers printed in pale green with repeated design of stylized peacocks. A stunning copy unique and arguably the finest copy of the De Luxe Edition. <br/><br/>The binding and endpapers do not conform to Hughey's description and appear to be unique to this handsome copy. As she notes the pigskin binding "brandy colour" not dark chocolate-brown as here should only have two thin gilt rules as frame gilt lettering date 1911 on spine and white endpapers not illustrated as here and in the trade edition. We contacted her for insight. Having seen only two copies of the Edition De Luxe William Randolph Hearst's and another viewed at a Washington book fair she reports:<br/><br/>"So where does your copy fit in And when was it bound I tend to think it was done close to original printing time November 1911. There were a lot of oddball copies done then.The title was sold very quickly - all sold by December 1911. The fact that your endpapers are paper available at the time to the trade edition tends to date it.It is possible that someone or firm had this done for your copy #20. Your copy's binding design on front cover is clearly an adaptation of the endpapers but I do not think by Dulac as it does not appear in any of his other editions of Hans Andersen's work. Someone may not have liked the plain cover."<br/><br/>If that's the case we'd like to thank them. This special copy is the better for it.<br/><br/>Hughey 27.
