Although a prolific writer of plays travelogues novels and poems he is best remembered for his literary fairy tales. Andersen's fairy tales consisting of 156 stories across nine volumes have been translated into more than 125 languages. They have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness readily accessible to children but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. His most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes" "The Little Mermaid" "The Nightingale" "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" "The Red Shoes" "The Princess and the Pea" "The Snow Queen" "The Ugly Duckling" "The Little Match Girl" and "Thumbelina". Illustrated By: Edmund Dulac Illustrator Bio: Edmund Dulac born Edmond Dulac; 22 October 1882 25 May 1953 was a French-British naturalised magazine illustrator book illustrator and stamp designer. He then became a regular contributor to The Pall Mall Magazine and joined the London Sketch Club which introduced him to the foremost book and magazine illustrators of the day. Through these he began an association with the Leicester Galleries and Hodder & Stoughton; the gallery commissioned illustrations from Dulac which they sold in an annual exhibition while publishing rights to the paintings were taken up by Hodder & Stoughton for reproduction in illustrated gift books publishing one book a year. Books produced under this arrangement by Dulac include Stories from The Arabian Nights 1907 with 50 colour images; an edition of William Shakespeare's The Tempest 1908 with 40 colour illustrations; The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam 1909 with 20 colour images; The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales 1910; Stories from Hans Christian Andersen 1911; The Bells and Other Poems by Edgar Allan Poe 1912 with 28 colour images and many monotone illustrations; and Princess Badoura 1913. Fairy Tales

A near fine copy of the limited 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' in a half leather binding by Birdsall of Northampton and London. Copy number 233 of 500 signed by Kay Nielsen on the limitation page. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Kay Nielsen's third illustrated book begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. The tales chosen include The Snow Queen and The Red Shoes and Nielsen's illustrations perfectly complement the text. The binding has small gilt-decorated raised bands to the spine creating 3 compartments - the top one with gilt titles and the other 2 with a decorative gilt design. It is in near fine clean and sound condition with very light rubbing to the surface and edges. The endpapers are marbled with the small stamp of Birdsall - Northampton and London to the bottom of the front pastedown. They were one of the major British bookbinders from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century - finally ceasing to trade in 1961. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The contents are complete and very clean. There are some small splits at the front endpaper joint but the book is sound. There is a small spot in the side margin of p118 where the surface has been lost and has attached to the side margin of p119. There is very slight browning at the page edges. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
Hodder and Stoughton hardcover

Hans Andersen
Fairy Tales

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited 1924 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in dark blue decorative cloth binding signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. It is a beautiful and expensive production but the changing market for colour plate books meant that it had to have fewer colour plates than Nielsen's earlier works. This book is number 378 of 500 printed. The blue cloth binding has bright gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. The front board is bright and clean with light corner and edge wear. The spine is dulled with a lot of pulling to the top and bottom and the back board is clean but with some scuff marks and light corner and edge wear. There is a small ink spot to the bottom page edges not visible from inside the book. The contents are complete and in very good to near fine clean condition. The book is slightly shaken and there is occasional light brown spotting in the gutter and the occasional light mark elsewhere - principally to preliminaries and end leaves.
Hodder and Stoughton Limited hardcover
