Due opere fondamentali nella storia della marina militare italiana moderna. -Simone de Saint-Bon 1828-1892: Allievo della Scuola di Marina di Genova a 14 anni partecip� a tutte le campagne risorgimentali guadagnando a Gaeta la croce di cavaliere dell�Ordine Militare di Savoia e nel 1866 la Medaglia d�oro al valor militare "per la sua eroica condotta a San Giorgio di Lissa al comando della R. Nave Formidabile." Autore nel 1863 dell'opuscolo "Pensieri sulla marineria militare" che dimostrava la necessit� di dotarsi di navi corazzate riusc� a far s� che il Ministero della Marina abbandonasse il programma di costruzioni appena preso in considerazione che prevedeva 12 vascelli di legno e passasse a dotarsi di corazzate. Promosso contrammiraglio nel 1873 fu Ministro della Marina dal 1873 al 1876 riorganizzando radicalmente la flotta. Si devono infatti a lui l'introduzione delle navi classe Caio Duilio progettate da Benedetto Brin e dei relativi armamenti pesanti la prosecuzione degli studi sulle torpedini l'introduzione del siluro e la nascita della specialit� Torpedinieri nella Regia Marina. - Benedetto Brin 1823-1898: Entrato in servizio nella Marina sarda nel 1853 come ufficiale del Genio navale nel 1864 pubblic� un articolo in cui dimostrava l�ineluttabilit� del passaggio alle navi corazzate trovandosi cos� sulla stessa linea di Simone Pacoret de Saint-Bon. Promosso direttore delle costruzioni navali nel 1871 collabor� con Saint-Bon divenuto ministro della Marina. Fu deputato per i collegi di Livorno e Torino nelle legislatura dalla XII alla XX. Ricopr� la carica di ministro della Marina dal 1876 al 1878 poi dal 1884 al 1891. Divenuto ministro degli esteri nel 1892-93 conserv� interinalmente il portafoglio della Marina che riebbe come titolare dal 1896 fino alla morte due anni pi� tardi. Punto principale del pensiero di Brin era che il possesso di navi non bastava anzi non serviva se non si era in grado di costruirle fabbricandone ogni minimo componente colle risorse nazionali. Per questo fu un acceso fautore del protezionismo che port� alla nascita dell�industria pesante italiana. Fu lui a promuovere lo sviluppo degli stabilimenti di Venezia e Pozzuoli fu lui a volere la nascita delle Acciaierie di Terni poste all�interno del Paese non solo per sfruttare l�energia idraulica della vicina cascata delle Marmore ma soprattutto per renderle impossibili da colpire dal mare. Fu lui infine a imporre lo sviluppo delle fabbriche di motori navali la creazione della base di Taranto la costruzione dei nuovi bacini dell'Arsenale della Spezia la riorganizzazione dell�amministrazione e della contabilit� della Marina e la fusione delle Scuole di Marina di Napoli e Genova in una sola Accademia navale a Livorno. Alla sua morte nel 1898 su 202 unit� in servizio nella Regia Marina ben 141 erano state ordinate � e in gran parte progettate - da lui. Loescher, Bocca unknown
