Elle est illustrée d'un frontispice, de 8 figures gravées par Scotin, de 4 charmants cul-de-lampe historiés et 4 bandeaux de titre (amours jouant). Tips a bit worn spine a bit toned sound otherwise. Annotated with learned and comments in a fine contemporary hand with extensive notes to the rear blanks. Among other reflections the annotator remarks on p. 160 'The excision of over-erotic passages has led here and there to solecism e.g. the change of 'hon' to 'heyn' in IV11 calls for the omission of 'kai' before 'ouden'.' We suspect the owner's name 'R. A. Clarke' appears to be in another name leaving this first reader unfortunatlely anonymous noting only 'From Class Rev. August 1910 after the final notes. 'Despite its perennial popularity and the admiration of no less an authority than Goethe Daphnis and Chloe was largely ignored by classical scholars being considered trivial and/or pornographic until the 1960s when the ancient novel began to be viewed as a worthwhile object of study.'
