Readers sympathetic to the Republicans were dismayed by his account of the internal strife that tore apart the leftist front and the Daily Telegraph suggested that his memoir lead to the conclusion that "perhaps only Franco can save Spain from tearing herself to pieces." The unity that was ultimately imposed by the victorious general came at a high cost: tens of thousands of Spaniards were executed after the war and hundreds of thousands sent to concentration camps. Gollancz 1940. Hardcover. Very Good. A first edition first printing published by Gollancz in 1940. Some light spotting to end papers. Some foxing to edges which are a little dusty. Very slight wear to head and tail of spine. Cloth dull with a few blemishes. The unclipped dust wrapper priced 7/6 net on the spine dust marked with some creasing and rubbing. Spine of dust wrapper tanned. Some ink marks to rear. One crease to the spine and to the top of the front panel. Initially a review of 'Tropic of Cancer' by Henry Miller Orwell moves on to discuss Charles Dickens and 1920s to 1930s literature. The biblical story of Jonah and the whale is used as a metaphor for accepting experience without seeking to change it Jonah inside the whale being comfortably protected from the problems of the outside world. A very rare Orwell title with no US equivalent edition. Gollancz published 1000 copies were published of which 'several copies were destroyed in an air raid.' cf. Fenwick G. 1998. Orwell's short essay reflects on Burnham's thesis that technocracy would supplant capitalism - forcefully or otherwise. George Kateb has argued that Orwell's interpretation of Burnham's politics would serve as the "intellectual basis of 1984" p. 572. Notably however Orwell rejects Burnham's contention that the ruling class can effectively redefine reality at will. In this critical discussion Orwell born Eric Arthur Blair 1903-50 acknowledges that the general drift has "almost certainly been towards oligarchy" and "an increasing concentration of industrial and financial power" but criticizes the tendency of Burnham's "power-worship" and comments upon the failures in analysis that arise from it. As biographer Michael Shelden observed "Orwell was always at his best when he was on the attack and his Polemic essay on Burnham is a brilliant criticism of the whole concept of power worship." Preceded by publisher's remarks by James Robertson of the Berkeley Young Socialist League the influential leftist campus group.
