Eight Original Publicity Stills for: "1984."
Np: Columbia Pictures / Holiday Production 1955. Eight 8x10" glossy b&w publicity stills five with studio captions in lower margins; two have studio stamps and printed squibs attached to versos. One still has some inky fingerprints on the blank verso and two closed edge tears three have a small private collection stamp on verso and one has a Collector's Book Store stamp on the verso otherwise very good to about fine. Directed by Michael Anderson and starring Edmond O'Brien Jan Sterling Michael Redgrave Donald Pleasance et al this b&w adaptation captured the dingy bleakness of Orwell's vision of the future and served its origin well. The film is itself rather elusive these days and any scripts and publicity paper associated with it even more so. Columbia Pictures / Holiday Production unknown books

Orwell George with WJ. West ed. W. J.
Orwell The War Broadcasts
London: Duckworth / BBC 1985. Hardcover. NF/NF. Black cloth/boards; gold spine lettering. Sepia photograhic dj with black spine lettering. 304 pp. with 23 bw images. Editor W.J. West discovered a numerous scripts and pieces of correspondence by Orwell. These together with Orwell's noted news commentary on the course of WWII during the years 1941-43 form the basis of the book. "Not only is it fascinating in itself but it proves the extreme importance of the period to Orwel's literary development. Thus the setting of Animal Farm is seen to derive from a radio adaptation of a political fable set in a pig farm; and 1984 can be traced in its crucial hands of the Ministry of Information under Brendan Bracken which censored all overseas broadcasts and became the model of the Ministry of Truth. Orwell (George)
Nineteen Eighty-Four.
London: Secker & Warburg 1949. First edition. Hardcover. Jacket design by Michael Kennard. 1949 First edition first impression. 8vo. Original cloth. Green dust-jacket priced 10s. A wonderful example of the first edition of Orwell's dystopian classic benefiting from some skilful minor restoration to remove a sticker mark from the jacket spine and improving the corners. Although many worthy experts suggest that the red jacket has historically proved to be the scarcer it is our experience that the green one has proved equally difficult to acquire in recent years - worth noting that of ten jacketed first editions that appeared at auction in 2025 eight were in the red jacket. Bookplate to front pastedown and ink name to front free endpaper; jacket with expert restoration to corners and central section of spine resulting in an excellent example. Very good Secker & Warburg hardcover
