brossura In Bucovina, provincia orientale dell'ex impero austro-ungarico, nacque nel 1920 Paul Celan, poeta ebreo di lingua tedesca, considerato uno dei massimi lirici del XX secolo. A Czernowitz, capitale della Bucovina, divenuta romena nel 1919, trascorse l'infanzia e gran parte della giovinezza. Durante l'occupazione nazista subì l'internamento in un ghetto e in un campo di lavoro, ma la ferita insanabile fu la deportazione e l'assassinio dei genitori. Con la fine del conflitto mondiale e l'annessione della Bucovina settentrionale all'Ucraina le condizioni di vita degli ebrei sotto il regime comunista s'inasprirono nuovamente. Trasferitosi nel 1945 a Bucarest, vi rimase due anni, tra i più felici e fecondi della sua turbolenta esistenza. Giunto clandestinamente in Austria, soggiornò alcuni mesi a Vienna. Nel luglio del 1948 emigrò a Parigi, dove morì suicida nel 1970. Sulla base di un lavoro di ricerca e di documentazione durato vari anni, Israel Chalfen ripercorre con rigore e fedeltà la prima metà della vita di Celan, la sua dolorosa vicenda umana e intellettuale, risalendo alle radici culturali che ispirarono e permearono la sua densa produzione lirica.

"The Wind of the Spirit" 1966 and "Pledge of Life" 1967 dedicated to 'D. and L' Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst were written while Irene Champernowne was at the Withymead Centre founded by her and her husband Gilbert in 1942. Both inscribed on the title page to 'Thea'. A card typed poem and handwritten note laid in. Both covers are sunned. Edges are a little creased.
