Davies Byron

Earlier and Later Leaves: or an Autumn gathering
Belfast Ireland: W.H. Greer 1878. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. A delightful copy in octavo format gilt portrait frontis at xxvii 638 pp. Original publisher's blind-stamped green cloth gilt device to front over lettering and illustration to spine. Toning to pastedown and other endpapers bumped spine head and foot else just about rock-solid. This copy has the original publisher's name laid over by a printed W.H. Green name and address but also with the tell-tale little dealer stamp of Allen & Johnston Bookbinders Belfast inside front flap at bottom near gutter. Francis Davis was born the son of a soldier in Ballincollig County Cork. A Wikipedia entry about him notes that his father was a Presbyterian from the north of Ireland while his mother Jane MacFee was from Belfast. His father fought in the Napoleonic wars his mother died when he was young he was consigned to drudge-work at a loom as an apprentice and when his father died he left for Belfast. He made a living as a weaver and poet thereafter. He was fluent in French Latin Greek and Gaelic in addition to English. The Life of Thomas Chatterton
London: Thomas Tegg 1806. SEE PHOTOS. Near Very Good condition. A solid copy with sound hinges. 10 cm by 16.5 cm. Previous owner's name and a few lines of poetry in manuscript. Square and reasonably tight. Bound in contemporary marbled boards with leather calf spine and corners moderately rubbed. Lettered in gold over a black leather panel on the spine with 5 raised bands. Gilt titles and decorations on the spine are still bright and shiny. Most pages shows only light scattered foxing but moderately heavy on pages 1-17. NO foxing on the title page. No date of publication is indicated in the book but the Library of Congress online catalog and Watt both say 1806. Early biography of the boy genius and forger of medieval poetry Thomas Chatterton 1752-1770 who was a published author by the age of 11. Writing as Thomas Rowley an imaginary 15th century priest Chatterton's literary creations were authentic enough to fool numerous literary figures of his time including Horace Walpole. Although Chatterton committed suicide by poison at the age of 17 his writings influenced an entire generation of poets. Both Keats and Coleridge wrote poems about him. Wordsworth referred to him as "the marvelous boy." Keats inscribed his Endymion "to the memory of Thomas Chatterton." Includes an appendix with 8 of Chatterton's letters.
