A collection of poems by the Berkeley street poet 1943-2018. Many of the verses are extremely short: "Everybody / is an oppressed minority." What It All Comes Down To while there are longer meditations on life such as "I Remember When I Was Human."<br /><br />"In approximately 50 poetry books one titled 'Eye Contact Is a Confession' Vinograd channeled her thoughts and observations into verse. Or as she put it in a July 2017 profile on the Quirky Berkeley website: 'Poems walked by and I wrote them.'" San Francisco: Auerhahn Press No date but ca. 1959.<br /><br />First Edition First Printing. Single sheet folded to create a broadside with printing on five of the eight panels. Measures 5 5/8 x 5 inches 143 x 128 mm when folded. <br /><br /><b>SIGNED</b> by Michael McClure one of the authors featured in this broadside for Auerhahn publications. The broadside features excerpts of poetry by McClure John Wieners Philip Lamantia and Philip Whalen. The idea was to promote Auerhahn's books and pamphlets. Although the broadside doesn't contain a publication date we estimate 1959 based on the broadside's list of forthcoming publications. <br /><br />Dave Haselwood founded Auerhahn in 1958 and published works that increased the influence of the Beat movement. His publications "were known to those on the scene as thoughtfully designed beautifully produced aesthetic objects showcasing some of the finest voices of the 'new poetry.'" Steven Belletto <i>The Beats: A Literary History</i> page 252. <br /><br />Michael McClure who signed this broadside was instrumental in launching the Beat movement. He died on May 4 2020 at age 87. McClure took part in a legendary poetry reading at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in October 1955. Other readers were Allen Ginsberg who read an early version of Howl Philip Lamantia Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen with Kenneth Rexroth acting as master of ceremonies. <br /><br />A beautiful broadside from Auerhahn Press signed by the late Michael McClure. First edition in English of this collection of the Russian poet's work edited by Patricia Blake and Max Hayward with an introduction by W.H. Auden and featuring translations by Auden Jean Garrigue Hayward Stanley Kunitz Stanley Moss William Jay Smith and Richard Wilbur. This is a bilingual edition with the poems in Russian and English. <br /><br />Two pieces of ephemera are laid in: a card announcing a reading by Voznesensky at the Poetry Center of the 92nd Street YM-YWHA dated November 14 no year given and inscribed by Voznesensky "For Riva." The other is a folded program for an appearance by Voznesensky at another reading also at the Poetry Center in 1991 with fellow reader Allen Ginsberg.<br /><br />This edition contains a final section of poems called The Fifth Ace as in the title of the book and should not be confused with other "Antiworlds" editions lacking The Fifth Ace. <br /><br />While copies signed by the translators are readily available in the market copies signed by Voznesensky are far from common. <b>SCARCE SIGNED</b>. <br /><br />CONDITION: Slight rubbing to cloth internally clean bright and unmarked. One of only 100 numbered copies. A long poem inspired by the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco. The "triana" of the title refers to a gypsy settlement. With an accompanying manilla envelope addressed by Hirschman to Collins.<br /></p><p>Hirschman a former poet laureate of San Francisco and radical social activist died in August 2021. Each is one of only 26 lettered and SIGNED copies. Our set is letter Y. Total edition sizes ranged from 300 copies at the beginning of the series in 1994 to 750 copies when the series ended in 2006. Each broadside appears on a single sheet folded to create 8 panels. 8 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches 215 x 90 mm when folded. The series contains a remarkable collection of writers including established poets such as Amiri Baraka Robert Creeley Jerome Rothenberg Anne Waldman Alice Notley Diane Di Prima Dick Higgins Jackson Mac Low Joanne Kyger Jack Hirschman Carl Rakosi Aram Saroyan Anselm Hollo and many others. But it's not just big names. There are many emerging or lesser-known poets as well. Please inquire for a complete list.Sylvester Pollet 1939-2007 was the mastermind behind this series. He was an associate editor of the National Poetry Foundation and taught creative writing at the University of Maine Orono. According to the previous owner of this set "He Pollet published work under the Backwoods Broadsides imprint for many years but the chaplet series was his 'heart' project." Included with the set is Pollet's "farewell" letter to subscribers ending the series in 2006. OCLC FirstSearch shows numerous institutional holdings of individual broadsides presumably unsigned copies. But as far as we can determine only the University of Wisconsin has a complete set of the series. There were no other sets in commerce as of March 14 2019. Black ribbon attached inside the box. <p><b>SIGNED</b> by Jack Hirschman on the title leaf. A limited edition of only 30 boxed sets featuring facsimiles of poetry broadsides produced in 1979 by Hirschman and the Union of Street Poets in San Francisco. Hirschman wrote many of the poems but he also translated the works of others such as Vladimir Mayakovsky. <br /></p><p>As he explains in a two-page introduction Hirschman artist Kristen Wetterhahn and poet Jack Mueller formed the Union of Street Poets in December 1978. Mueller died in 2017 and Hirschman passed away in 2021. The group made photocopies of poems in editions of 100 copies which they gave to fellow poets and artists as well as the general public. This edition reproduces 23 of the broadsides on multicolored paper most with striking art work by Wetterhahn.<br /></p><p>A typically beautiful production by Soheyl Dahi and his Sore Dove Press known for high-quality limited editions of works by poets and artists.<br /></p><p>OCLC lists seven institutional holdings: SUNY at Buffalo San Jose State Berkeley Colorado Yale Delaware and Texas. A long poem on the U.S. and the Soviet Union dedicated to the poet Andre Vosnesensky rendered as Voznesensky in the poem itself and "In memory of Jack Kerouac and the inspired and living presence of Harold Goldfinger." Micheline 1929-1998 was closely associated with the Beat poets of San Francisco.</p><p>As almost always the case in this poem three lines "Hitler is here Hitler is here Hitler is here" are crossed out on the penultimate page. Laid in is a card 11 inches 28 cm long and folded in half giving Micheline's biography a list of publications and readings and information on how to book his lectures "$150 for the day". It states that "Kuboya" was published privately by Don Donahue although there's no such indication in the book. <br /><br /></p> Self-published

A warm and significant association. Padgett b. 1942 introduced Schneeman to the New York scene when Schneeman and his family moved to the city from Italy in the 1960s. Schneeman 1934-2009 regularly collaborated with poets and writers of the New York School illustrating their books magazines and broadsides.</p><p>"In Advance of the Broken Arm" is Padgett's debut collection of poems published by Ted Berrigan's C Press. This copy is the second edition after the 1964 edition one of 200 numbered copies this being #140. Edited by Ted Berrigan cover and drawings by Joe Brainard. A particularly important association between Padgett and Schneeman who were close friends.<br /></p><p>CONDITION: Light edge wear toning and soiling to the covers else bright and sound. A meditation on "my little world" written when she and fellow poet Lewis Warsh were living on St. Mark's Place in the East Village. The poem is dated December 3 1967 but was published by their Angel Hair imprint in 1968. The book features a beautiful cover illustration by George Schneeman who often collaborated with New York School poets. <br /></p><p>Corinth reprinted Giant Night in 1970; that edition is readily obtainable.
