Includes candid and formal shots of women in full uniform WAVES graduation ceremonies naval buildings classroom and dormitory interiors group portraits and social outings.<br /> <br /> A vivid personal archive centering on the life of Ruth G. Ganstad of Grenora North Dakota a young woman serving in the U.S. Navy’s WAVES Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service program in the mid to late 1950s. The album begins with a formal class portrait and printed graduation program from the U.S. Naval Hospital Corps School in Bethesda Maryland dated December 15 1955 and follows the Gangstad's daily experience in training and service: standing in formation posing in uniform on base and off-duty at dormitories and parties. Gangstad appears in multiple formal portraits in WAVES dress uniform at attention on base and off-duty in dorms dining halls and public spaces. Dozens of images portray female Navy personnel in uniform standing proudly in formation or relaxing on furlough often arm-in-arm with fellow WAVES. Also depicted are friendships with fellow WAVES and male Navy officers moments of levity and excursions into town. A newspaper clipping at the rear documents the Gangstad's military wedding at the Bainbridge Naval Base Chapel.<br /> <br /> The WAVES program Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service was established in 1942 as part of the broader mobilization of women into military roles during WWII. While many of the original wartime WAVES demobilized after 1945 the program continued through the Cold War era. In 1948 the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women permanent status in the regular Navy though gender roles remained rigid. This album captures a critical yet underdocumented period in the integration of women into full-time military service illustrating both professional pride and personal camaraderie. Unlike WWII-era WAVES material which often centers on wartime production this album captures the lesser-documented postwar continuity of women’s military service in peacetime. It serves as a scarce chronicle of gender discipline and camaraderie in a transitional moment before the women’s rights movements of the 1960s. One of the most historically significant pieces is a press photograph of Phyllis Sully identified on the verso as the first woman to receive the newly issued B.Ph. degree from London University—a pivotal milestone in British academic history during the post-suffrage era. 2 Letters Commending a Female Student About to Enter the Medical Field 1890s
Two letters commending a female medical student Clara Cowles who is about to enter the field. The first is an autograph letter signed and dated 16 March 1893. 1 page handwritten on National Homeopathic Medical College of Chicago letterhead from the desk of W. M. W. Davison M. D. 9 x 5 ¾ in. Excellent condition with two horizontal fold lines. Davison writes in part: "Miss Cowles Kindly I wish to congratulate you for your most excellent paper." This letter also comes with a business card from W. M. W. Davison again dated March 16th 1893 which verifies that "Miss C S Cowles has passed the examination in Histology and Physiology and her standing is 90 in the former and 100 in the latter."<br/><br/>The second is a typed letter signed and dated January 24 1896. 1 page on The People's Health Journal letterhead from the desk of editors L. D. Rogers M.D. and Ida Wright Rogers M.D. two married doctors. 8.5 x 11 in. They write:<br/><br/>"Miss Clara CowlesEl Dorado Kas.<br/>Dear Miss Cowles:--<br/>Your favor of the 17th. together with your first examination papers came duly to hand. We have returned the papers. They were excellent. <br/>We thank you for the names of your two friends and will write to them. Let us hear from you often. <br/>Yours very sincerely Drs Rogers & Rogers"<br/><br/>Very good condition with two vertical fold creases and one horizontal one at center. Small tear at upper left crease. Comes with a joint business card for Drs. Rogers & Rogers and inscribed in pencil on verso is the address for Dr. E. S. Reed Dentist. Four more inscribed business cards from doctors are included. One of the cards is from Dr. E. S. Reed and has a neat inscription on verso in ink declaring that Miss C. S. Cowles "has a standing of 98 in Dental-Surgery for the session of 1892 & '93" signed by E.S. Reed Professor of Dental Surgery. Interesting 19th century correspondence related to a young woman's medical education and those who offered her professional support and encouragement. unknown books

Letter to a Woman Doctor Inquiring About Marriage Prospects 1895 "I wish to correspond with a lady physician . my object is honorable I will marry if I find one to suit me.
Autograph letter signed from a male doctor E. C. Houston practicing out of Memphis TN to a woman doctor Lydia Bailey located in Philadelphia. 6 pages 7 ¾ x 5 in. Houston addresses the letter "Dear Doctor" and goes on to write about his interest in finding a wife who is "educated in the same profession" as himself. He writes that believes that he "could love her better" than one who didn't share his medical background. He goes on to list basic facts about himself and inquires about her background and physical qualities such as her "height weight and measurement around hips waist & chest". Very good condition with two worn horizontal fold lines in letter pages. Papers are separating at edges of fold lines sheets 2 and 3 have minor tape repairs. Light soiling from handling but overall clean and clear script. Includes original envelope Houston's calling card listing him as a medical doctor and a blank prescription sheet that lists his medical credentials. An interesting letter that demonstrates a unique social situation that educated professional women could face in the late 19th century. unknown books

Original vintage photograph of a female teacher directing male medical students dissecting a cadaver c. 1890. Black and white 3"x5" with back matting. One woman surrounded by four men lean over a table with a skeleton. Behind them is a chalkboard with anatomical pull down charts. Although women had participated in the informal practice of medicine for hundreds of years the United States and most industrialized nations did not allow women into the formal practice of medicine until the latter half of the 19th century. This female doctor was part of the first generation formally accepted by medical institution. She wears a medal indicating her importance and perhaps former military involvement. Early photographs of women in medicine are very rare photograph of surgery or dissection much rarer. <br/><br/>Women practiced in the medical field for hundreds of years until new licenser rules established in the Victorian era provided a means for their exclusion. The story of how women reclaimed their role in medicine is one of resourcefulness and determination. In 1849 the first American woman graduated medical school. The path was difficult; few medical schools would accepted them and the reception was not always welcoming. Female doctors were called not only to prove their ability to practice medicine but to justify their unique necessity to the field. Of all the specialties the most embattled for women is surgery; early on they faced a challenge obtaining education training and facilities. A perennial argument was that cadaver dissection necessary to training was inappropriate for the delicate female disposition. However this Victorian-era photograph showing a woman capably participating in cadaver dissection proves that in the words of Dr. Mary Putnam Jacobi the best known female doctor in 1891 "It is perfectly evident.that the opposition to women physicians has rarely been based upon any sincere conviction that women could not be instructed in medicine but upon an intense dislike to the idea that they should be. unknown books

London: The Scientific Press 1916. First edition. Very Good . Scarce first edition of a Red Cross manual designed both for emergency workers and women in the home. Original publisher's cloth binding titled in red on spine and front board. Boards a bit rubbed and soiled corners bumped. Faint offsetting to the endpapers. Inscribed by Edith Newsome on the front pastedown: "With the Author's Compliments Edith Newsome. 16.10.23." A scarce book institutionally and in trade OCLC reports only 11 copies in libraries this being the only one currently on the market. <br/><br/>Edith Newsome's first major work on nursing produced after she realized that her Red Cross lecture series could not provide complete enough information to train "those who have so nobly responded to the 'call of duty'; to do all that is in their power to tend and succour the brave men of our nation by proving themselves valuable and intelligent helpers." Indeed Newsome's work was released two years into World War I -- the first modern war which brought with it a horrifying number of previously unknown injuries and ailments. In addition to professional nurses women enrolled to assist as Volunteer Aid Detachments VADs because there simply were not enough women with medical educations to serve the nation's need. The present work is a stirring acknowledgement of this. Comprehensive in training VADs and new nurses in field operations it also contains information for women in the home who confronted infection illness or injury and served as domestic caretakers for men returning from the front. Some chipping and creasing to edges but overall intact and undamaged despite being quite delicate. Light scattered foxing throughout. Ownership signature of the college's original dean N.R. Mosely struck out at the top of the Faculty list on page 4; pencil ticks next to the names of several students listed in the catalogue on page 6. Exceptionally rare OCLC lists copies of this Announcement at only 2 institutions.<br/><br/>Only one year after Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell graduated valedictorian and became the first female M.D. in the U.S. the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania opened its doors. Located in Philadelphia it was the only the second school to open with the mission of training women in medicine -- having been preceded by the New England Female Medical College two years earlier in 1848. Founded by Quaker abolitionist and Underground Railroad activists who believed that women could make exceptional doctors "the college provided rare opportunities for women to teach perform research manage a medical school and with the eventual establishment of the Woman's Hospital in 1861 learn and practice in a hospital setting. It was the longest-lasting all-women medical school in the nation until it became coeducational in 1970" Mandell. The present Announcement predates these growths however showing the roots from which they emerged. One year running and the faculty remain largely male because there has yet to be an inaugural graduating class this would come in 1852; but already a female student Hannah E. Longshore is listed as a Demonstrator in Anatomy. Indeed Longshore and her sister Anna would both be part of the inaugural class of the college with the latter going on the author Discourses to Women in Medical Subjects 1897. Indeed the majority of women listed in this catalogue went on to become doctors even when it took time -- as it did for Hannah W. Ellis and Susanna H. Ellis both listed among the graduates of the 1865 class. 12 pages in all this scarce pamphlet contains Officers Corporators Faculty and Students of the school; an Announcement on the school's missions and accomplishments; information on Specialties available; Terms of enrollment; and a list of required Textbooks. It also conveys the excitement optimism and pride of those involved. "The Faculty of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania are inspired by very different feelings from those that attended their efforts one year ago. Then they were about to enter into an untried path to engage in a great experiment.But that which was an experiment is an experiment no longer.give a woman knowledge commensurate with her natural qualifications enable her to go forth healing the sick and comforting the afflicted and she will bless the world." A rare survivor documenting that pivotal moment when women had been given the chance to prove their intellect rose to the challenge and made the future of the next female students more secure. Annette Alison writes about the need to support and recruit women in the field of nursing in the aftermath of World War I: "We have gone forward by leaps and bounds for our profession is a new one and the paths of the world are ours." Even by 1950 most nursing schools would only accept and train women under the explicit circumstance that they were single and without children. A practiced nurse concerned about the future of the profession Annette Alison implores other nursing alumnae to become involved with nursing programs and students preparing them to enter the male dominated medical field. The women wear crisp white smocks some over striped shirtwaists with broad cuffs and bonnets that evolve in shape over time. Their expressions are serious marking their professionalism and dedication to the gravity of their work. In one portrait the subject holds what appears to be her rolled diploma suggesting a graduation portrait. These women pursued careers during decades when doing so violated social norms and often required significant personal sacrifice. Overall very good condition. unknown

World War I Nursing Printed and hand colored nursing award certificate by the Holt School in Liverpool. 1918. Measures 12" x 17" inches. Attractive hand-colored illustration featuring an 8.5" x 8.5" inch medallion with a Red Cross nurse at its center her portrait the center of a tree surrounded by branches and supported by trunk with smaller portraits of women at work in traditionally male occupations their images between the branches that surround the central figure. A bright floral border surrounds the medallion. Beneath it reads the credited Tennyson quote "The woman's cause is man's: they rise or sink together dwarfed or godlike bond or free. Yoked in all exercise of noble end." The certificate was awarded by the Liverpool Education Committee during World War I to celebrate the part played by women in the war effort. "This the fourth certificate awarded by the Liverpool Education Comittee in pace of a prize during the great war". Blank verso.<br /> Small half-inch tear on margin does not affect the text or image. 2 Albumen photos of early recreational tennis game. Circa 1880’s. Larger photo measures 6.75†x 8.5†inches on original photographer’s board measuring 9.75†x 6.75â€. Smaller photo measures 7.25†x 4.5†inches on white photographer’s board measuring 8†x 5†inches. Photo was taken by Marston photo studio of Bangor Maine. Larger photo shows a large group of young women posed in tiers on a lawn in front of a large brick building. The front row is spread across the grass with others in chairs behind them and the back row sitting on the open windowsill and ledge along the side of the building. The group is entirely female suggesting maybe an early women’s college all of them dressed in high-collared dresses long skirts with bustles many in hats and some with parasols. In the front row four women hold tennis rackets as if posing before or after a game. This restless group of young women are pictured in the 1870s or 1880's. The other photo shows a tennis game at play with a man on one side of the net and two women on the other holding rackets on a tennis lawn. The court has been constructed on a lawn with painted boundaries and a net which was customary in 19th century. In the background is a large white wooden house. Lawn tennis came into fashion in the 1870’s as an upper-class hobby marking leisure time for players and spectators. Some spotting and Light staining on photos does not effect clarity of images. Overall in very good condition. unknown

Early Photographs Women Scientists Conduct Experiments
Women in Science Two photos of women working with scientific laboratory equipment. Silver gelatin print photographs from 1930 and 1946. Image sizes 3.5 x 5.25†and 3 x 4â€. In both photographs women scientists work with glass test tubes pipettes and graduated beakers. One photo depicts two women in lab coats working with a series of test tubes standing outside c. 1930; this setting indicates this could possibly be part of an ecology or other environmental science lab. Second photo 1946 shows two women holding pipettes and smiling into the camera. The both wear white uniforms and their names are handwritten in pencil on image verso. During WWII women took up jobs in many sectors to support the country including science research and laboratory work. These women were essential in producing important medicines such as penicillin that were needed during wartime; this work helped pave the way for younger women scientists such as those pictured to have professional opportunities in the postwar period. These women may be in a specialized training program as they both wear all white uniforms. Both very good condition. unknown

Includes six silver gelatin press and studio photographs depicting female swimmers and divers dating ca. 1910–1933. Press photos with press annotations and stamps from ACME Newspictures NEA and Culver Service. Locations include Palm Beach Florida and Jones Beach State Park New York. This archive offers a vivid portrayal of women’s athleticism in a period when female sports participation was often marginalized with several images highlighting Olympic and championship-level divers and swimmers in action.<br /> <br /> Among the most striking is a 1933 photograph of Clarabel “Clare†Degener University of Michigan senior and 1932 Olympic diving medalist shown in “perfect form†mid-dive during an exhibition at Westchester Country Club Rye New York. The original caption and NEA reference stamp appear on verso. Another photograph dated July 23 1933 shows the start of the second heat in the 880-yard freestyle event during the Women's National Swimming Championships at Jones Beach featuring swimmers launching into the water before a packed audience. A third image captures Helen Meany famed Olympic diving champion in mid-somersault at a Palm Beach facility—also with original press label and NEA date stamp 1930. One early photo dating around 1910 depicts a female swimmer proudly holding a trophy at the shoreline signaling the emergence of women in competitive aquatic sports. Two additional studio portraits show swimmers at leisure: a duo seated lakeside in matching suits and caps and a group of four people standing in the water at a pool identified on verso as the family of international diplomats and military officers including Inga Bryn of Norway and Barine Drake daughter of Col. G.D. Drake.<br /> <br /> Verso stamps and typed captions mostly intact and legible. Overall very good condition. A visually compelling testament to early women’s sports history documenting the emergence of female champions in swimming and diving at both recreational and elite levels during a transformative period in gender and athletic culture. unknown

Silver gelatin photo featuring male and female high school students conducting experiments in chemistry class in Texas. Circa 1940s. Silver gelatin print. 9" x 7.25" inches. Verso inscribed in pencil with the intials B.H.S above "order #200 Reduce to 4 x 3 1/2". Further down verso marked in pencil is a calculation and studio stamp of Zintgraff Photograph of San Antonio TX. Photo shows chemistry classroom made up of five rows of high counters crowded with students clustered in groups of 2 or 3 pouring liquid between beakers and test tubes. Students include fifteen males and four females with a male professor in the center. The students eyes are focused on their work while the professor looks directly at the camera his expression unguarded. Most of the students have intent expressions but a few including one male student in military dress are clearly containing smiles conscious of the camera. Female students wear blouses and skirts male students collared shirts with two in military uniform and the professor is dressed in jacket and tie. Foregrounded is the surface of the front counter with chemistry tools and classroom materials lining it. A periodic table is visible hanging on the wall at the back of the classroom. Photo is well lit with rich details including student expressions which evoke the excitement of the occasion each one posing while trying not to appear posed. Overall very good condition. unknown

1905. Women in Sciences . Photograph: High School Girls Conducting Electricity Experiments 1905. Large sepia press photo. 8.5" x 7". Handwritten note on verso states the photograph is for an article on public schools. Creasing on upper right and left hand corners tiny tears and nicks along the top and bottom of the image. Very good condition overall. Approximately eighteen girls conducting experiments on electricity using conducting boxes at an unspecified public high school in New York. They sit on tall stools around long tables wearing expressions that vary from concentration to vexation. High school gave girls the opportunity to advance beyond a rudimentary education and become versed in subjects such as history their rights as citizens and advanced science. The US was the first nation to provide the general public with secondary education and in 1900 there were 6000 public schools. Only a fraction of those however were open to women. These girls were part of the first generation taught science a right denied to their mothers and grandmothers. unknown

The first photo is an original silver gelatin photograph of a Rustic pharmacological laboratory with female technician c. 1910. Three individuals pose amongst dozens of glass vials containing medical powders and remedies. 3.5 x 5 in. Original black and white photograph. Two figures wear white aprons or smocks indicating their important role in mixing and measuring different medicines. The first university Pharmacology department was established in 1847 and thus began the formalization of this field of scientific research as the 20th century witnessed a steady increase in the number of new drugs that would improve the human condition tremendously. Verso inscription in pencil and pen in European language. The second photo is an original silver gelatin photograph of a science laboratory with 6 person around a table filled with special equipment. c. 1920s. Real photo postcard. 3.5 x 5.5 in. From unknown European country. 4 girls in matching uniforms stand around a table engage in experiments and write observations in their notebooks. 1 uniformed young man stands nearby while an older student or teacher supervises. This dates from the 1920s after WWI had ended but a period in which militarization in Europe was considered of upmost national importance. The early 20th century was also a period of great development for women’s education as more schools and programs opened to girls. Real photo postcard was never mailed and has no message written on verso. Creases in lower and upper right corners. The third photo is of a Woman scientist in white laboratory uniform works at a table filled with laboratory equipment c. 1910. Original gelatin silver print photograph. 8 x 10 in. Many women in the early 20th century found impediments to advancing a career in the sciences but this photo demonstrates some of the important and lesser-known historical work done by women. While challenging gender stereotypes in the early 20th century women such as the lab worker pictured here fought discrimination to pursue their educational and professional ambitions. An important record of early women in STEM careers. Overall in very good condition. unknown

The first photo is of of female students conducting experiments in a chemistry lab at Northwestern University Evanston IL. Three women students and their instructor cook an egg through chemical reaction of liquid oxygen and ice. 8 x 10 in. The second photo is of a woman scientist working at laboratory table next to male colleague. Test tubes beakers petri dishes and various pieces of equipment cover the work table. 3.25 x 4.5 in. Dated in pencil verso 10/2/23. The man is smoking a pipe while working with pipette; the woman is organizing specimen vials. Hand of a third figures can be seen handing laboratory equipment along center left edge. Handwritten press information in a Nordic language on verso stating this is a bacteriological laboratory. The latter part of the 19th century saw a rise in educational opportunities for women and by the early 20th century women worked in many different fields related to science and medicine. Two Stereoview Photos of Red Cross Nurses Aiding Injured WWI Soldiers
Two stereoview photographs from New York City and Antwerp depicting nurses from the Red Cross attending to soldiers wounded in WWI. London: Underwood & Underwood. New York: Keystone View Company 1919. 7" x 3.5" inches. Photo from the Antwerp hospital is sepia toned and depicts a Red Cross nurse aside a man who has been gravely wounded and has a bandaged face and arm. There are two other men with less serious injuries also pictured. The New York City stereoview is black and white dated 1919 and has a full description on verso. The photo depicts a ward at Convalescent Hospital No. 5 which was located at Grand Central Palace and normally accommodated over 3400 patients. This hospital was typically the last stop for an injured soldier before being released home and the excitement is clearly worn on some soldiers' faces. During WWI Red Cross nurses provided vital medical aid and continued to assist the hospitalized soldiers after the war's end as shown by these photos. These two photos are both in very good condition. unknown
