THE TENTMAKER SIGNED COPYFIRST BOOK
NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999. First edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. SIGNED COPY signature only by the author on the front free endpaper. Authors first book. "Another clerical snoop takes to amateur sleuthing in this stylish debut from a poet and graduate of Harvard Divinity School who once considered becoming an Episcopal priest. Blake's heroine Lily Connor is a "tentmaker"Aan ordained priest who works outside the church. Lily is a spiritual nomad who as the novel begins has been assigned to serve as interim priest at Boston's St. Mary of the Garden Episcopal Church after the sudden death of the church's long-time spiritual head Father Fred Barnes. Lily's faith and authority are challenged immediately: the parishioners seem disinterested in her attempts to help them adjust to Barnes's death; the vestry members are downright hostile to her. When the sexton almost dies in a suspicious fall Lily begins to suspect Barnes was murdered and assembles an odd trio of investigators: her best friend Charlie Cooper a Brother in the Anglican Order of St. Peter; Mrs. Hanlon the loyal rectory cleaning woman who revered Father Barnes; and cop Tom Casey whose mother is a friend of Mrs. Hanlon. After discovering that Barnes had damaging information about a parishioner and hoped to use it as a lever for change within the church Lily's attention is drawn to wealthy Dan Talbot the vestry's conservative leader whose 16-year-old son has disappeared. Although the novel frequently sags under the weight of its intricate plot Blake's writing is graceful often elegiac and her characters hum with humanity. In addition her examination of the divisive issues facing an influential religious organization in a fast-changing society gives a rich background to an entertaining mystery." -- Publishers Weekly. Block, Barbara
CHUTES AND ADDERS: First Robin Light Title.
NY: Kensington Publishing Corp. 1994. First edition so stated August 1994. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. Cover illustration by Jeff Walker. Author's first novel. Features pet store owner Robin Light. This sharp-edged and wry mystery takes off quickly when an employee of Robin Light's marginally profitable pet store in Syracuse N.Y. dies painfully after opening a package containing a highly poisonous and aggressive snake. It soon becomes apparent however that the most venomous creatures in Block's debut novel are the two-legged kind. Robin recently widowed when her criminally inclined husband Murphy died of a cocaine overdose becomes prime suspect in the killing when $50000 is found hidden away in the store leading the thoroughly nasty cops to assume that Murphy was trading in protected animals. When Robin finds another $20000 hidden in her apartment she begins a search for the killer that leads her into bizarre interviews with a street thug who later winds up beaten into a coma a neighbor who ends up dead pushed off his balcony and a sadistic zookeeper who wisely remains silent; a smarmy lawyer and a sinister landlord add spice and complications. What seems to tie all these disparate folk together is the Latin American religion of Santeria--truly an odd practice to be popping up in bitterly cold upstate New York. Robin is an engaging if stubborn and reckless amateur sleuth whom readers will look forward to meeting again." -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Walker Jeff. Book.
