The Health care systems in India are very complex and diverse. Besides, the variety of systems existing, the age old family / community customs, norms and practices are widely adopted. The empirical evidence collected from six states and 48 villages show that faulty infant feeding practices and restricting the diet of the pregnant and lactating mother are stumbling blocks to timely health care and modern medication. The dogged adherence to superstition and belief in soothsayers and Ojhas do not permit women to take to Rural Health Mission infrastructure and facilities. Besides, ignoring the socio-economic causes and determinants to the rising Infant Mortality and Maternal Mortality has to be reviewed. Laying emphasis on pure clinical and medical causes for IMR and MMR needs and urgent review by Planners. Womens lack of empowerment is also a vital determinanat for the status of IMR and MMR. About The Author:- Padma Seth is a post graduate and an L.L.B. from the Banaras Hindu University and an Advanced Diploma holder in Public Administration from the University of Manchester U.K. She is a social worker, a legal researcher, practiced law and was Hony Magistrate first class. She was Director of the National Balbhavan from 1978-1990, and member of the National Commission for Women from 1992-98. She was a senior consultant to Unicef Head Quarters at Delhi from 1998-2002. She drafted many legal; bills and even gave evidence to the Standing Committees of Parliament. As member NCW, she initiated the Domestic violence bill and assisted the Courts on issues of women and children. The concept of CODIFICATION OF CRIMINAL LAWS FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN drew wide attention. She was NGO delegate to the UN Status of Womens Commission and Official delegate to SAARC on child protection 2000 and 1996 respectively. The last part is an annotated bibliography of over 50 relevant literatures on Aging, Gender and Mental Health. About The Author:- Prof. Parul Dave retired in 2005 from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda as Head, Department of Human Development and Family Studies and Director, Women’s Studies Research Centre. Family studies, women’s studies and aging are areas of her academic interest. Her research work varies from tribal areas of Gujarat to migrated Gujaratis within and outside India. She had received Post-doctoral Fulbright Fellowship in 1992 and Shastri Indo Canadian Felloship in Women and Development in 2001. For these fellowships she had studied situation, programs and policies of Indian Aging Women in U.S.A. and Canada respectively. She is particularly interested in marriage and intergeneration relationships with focus on gender issues. Prof. Pallavi M. Mehta holds a M.Sc. Degree in Foods and Nutrition and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from M.S. University of Baroda. Presently she is Head and Professor, Department of Foods and Nutrition at the M.s. University of Baroda. She has more than 34 years of experience in teaching and research. Her area of interest is Geriatric Nutrition. She has published sizeable number (over fifty) of papers in reputed National and International journals and written several monographs, chapters in books and report of the projects that she had undertaken. She was Govt. of India scholar for two years and during her career she made presentations at conferences and won prestigious awards like Goenka Memorial award from India Dietetic Association and Young Scientist award from Nutrition Society of India.
