‎[Poetry – Women – Vermont] Fay, Mary S‎

‎A Book of Poems by Amateur Poet Mary S. Fay With Several Concerning Temperance and Women’s Suffrage‎

‎Reading Vermont 1943. 156 pp with approximately 207 poems plus a 1934 rejection letter from Perry Mason & Co. Spine broken cover nearly detached and pages coming detached; some toning and wear to edges of pages with smell. Overall very good minus. A book of poems by Vermonter Mary S. Fay likely 1875–1968. Fay’s topics include friends’ special events; current events such as “Titanic†May 15 1912 and “America We Are Ready†1915 presumably concerning World War I; nature themes and seasonal poems; and especially nostalgic and sometimes defensive poems about Vermont including “Strike Not The Land That Shelters†which was “Written on learning slurs cast in Vermont by alliens who come to Vermont to resideâ€.<br /> <br /> However Fay sometimes took up expressly political causes in her poetry. For instance in April 1911 she penned “Equal Rights Proclaimingâ€:<br /> <br /> “Sister Woman look ahead / For there dawns the gladsome time / When thy queen Equal rights treads / O’er the land with light sublime: / O raise your voice on high / Loudly in sweet acclaim / ‘Till they reach yonder sky / And there the rights proclaim. . Sister Woman of today / Thou have striven long and well / Thou’ve waited in twilight grief / For the ring of Freedoms bell. / Though at times all seem’d as lost / Thou upheld thy banner height; / And you counted not the cost / But press’d onward thru’ the night.â€<br /> <br /> In March 1915 she took up the topic again in a poem titled “Enfranchisementâ€:<br /> <br /> “Fled the years of servile shame! / Woman ‘tis this hour at last / Honor thy glorious name / Spread thy banner to the blast. / Brave my sisters in thy might / Steadfast yet and valiant be; / On thy noble standard write / Equality law and liberty. . Enfranchisement thus we vow / Shall be ours ere we abate / Our strife which thru and thru / Of our life’s blood we consecrate / Upon the altar upon the shield / Equality for all eternity; / Shall be ours at home afield:- / Equality law and liberty.â€<br /> <br /> Despite the efforts of groups such as the Vermont Equal Suffrage Association formed in the early 1880s Vermont women did not get the right to vote until the rest of the country did ratifying the Nineteenth Amendment in 1921.<br /> <br /> She also writes an intriguing more general protest poem seemingly for labor rights titled “Justice Where†August 1911:<br /> <br /> “Tho labor’s toils in day by day / Beneath the heat and the cold; / While the oppresser sits in grandest state / With a mere pittance to pay / To keep hunger from the fold / And in false pride his tyranny relate. / Awake all ye toilers / Drive at the oppresor bold! / Unfurl thy glorious standard of Right / O’er many a dear home fold / And thus ever protect it with thy might.â€<br /> <br /> Another of Fay’s causes was temperance; in 1914 she wrote “A Temperance Boy†dedicated to “six year old Clark A. Ritchieâ€:<br /> <br /> “A little temperance boy am I / And proudly its banner I will fly. / Pure cold water is what I drink / And its the best of all I think. / A big promise don’t expect of me / for I’m only a little boy you see.â€<br /> She objects to smoking as well writing in “Why is it†1932 that “I must relate / smoking I hate. / ‘Be a sport girls’ / That is the cry / If in the whirl / They are a bit shy.â€<br /> <br /> Overall a charming document of a woman’s progressive politics expressed in verse. unknown‎

‎[Politics – Women – New York City] Committee for Judge Nanette Dembitz‎

‎“Judge Nanette Dembitz for Court of Appeals†Campaign Poster‎

‎New York City 1972. 15 ½ x 22 ½ inches. Masking tape at top and bottom; some folding to upper left edge some marginal chipping; fine contrast. Overall excellent. Nanette Dembitz 1913–1989 graduated cum laude from the University of Michigan then attended Columbia Law School where she edited the Columbia Law Review graduating in 1938. She was unable to find work in private practice because of her gender; as her April 1989 obituary in The New York Times reports she was told in an interview “that she might find a spot as a secretary if she could typeâ€. Dembitz instead went into public law and in 1967 was appointed to the Family Court by Mayor John Lindsay. This campaign poster is from Judge Dembitz’s 1972 run for New York State Court of Appeals. Dembitz successfully challenged Democratic appointees in the primary but Republicans swept the general election. unknown‎

‎Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1789. Single three-page letter measuring 7 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches. Folded with large tears at folds; excellent. A letter from H. Cathrall in Philadelphia to her friend Amey Thurston dated October 20th 1789. The letter discusses her health and the health and lives of their mutual friends. She also describes her experience of hearing ministry at a women’s Quaker meeting:<br /> <br /> “our yearly Solemnity was uncommonly large and much sisterly condescension was comfortingly evidencd; and thro the condescension of Isarels Israel’s King and Shepherd we were made in some sittings reverently to rejoice in that the Lord in wondrous Mercy had not forgotten Sion ‘nor yet in Anger cast off his People’~â€.<br /> <br /> Though Quaker worship meetings did not exclude women Philadelphia did have a women’s monthly meeting as well; Haverford College holds its membership book for 1793 Cathrall does not appear in it but at least one other name mentioned in her letter does.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of Philadelphia’s long Quaker history especially the role of Quaker women. unknown‎

‎[RETIF DE LA BRETONNE Nicolas Edme]:‎

Jacob, 241-247; Cohen, 878.‎

‎[SCRAPBOOK -- FOLK ART] [PHILADELPHIA] [NEWSPAPERS] [WOMEN]‎

‎Extraordinary family scrapbook of original drawings watercolors lithographs and Peale Museum silhouettes all pasted in an 1802 volume of the Philadelphia newspaper Gazette of the United States containing approximately 100 complete issues.‎

‎Folio 20 x 12½ inches contemporary half calf worn with boards detached. The first 24 leaves of this truly remarkable and quite large object are used as a circa 1820s scrapbook. This is followed by approximately 100 complete issues of the Gazette of the United States plus some partial issues with moderate wear. Philadelphia and environs 1802-circa 1824. The compliler of this scrapbook was possibly a descendant of Lynford Lardner 1715-1774 a close associate of the Penn's who had an estate at Tacony near Philadelphia. Much of the original art is by women. As nearly as can be assumed the artists featured include his daughter Hannah Lardner 1756-1839 and granddaughter Elizabeth Lardner 1791-1877 whose mother was from the Saltar family. The original art includes: a watercolor of a rose by Elizabeth Saltar Lardner of Tacony; an ink and wash landscape by Miss Hannah Lardner of Tacony; two ink and wash views by Frances "Fanny" Saltar 1790-1880 titled "Cootstown from the East" of Kutztown PA and "A View Down the Lehigh River from Bethlehem Bridge". There are two watercolors of flowers by Frances Saltar of Tacony trimmed and laid in rather than mounted; an unsigned watercolor still life of shells; an unsigned pencil sketch of a ruined building; an unsigned pencil sketch of a residence; and a watercolor of flowers in an urn signed "S. Courlander." Also included are 20 silhouettes in a uniform format 5 x 4 inches all but three of them laid down on dark paper. Some bear faint embossed stamps reading "Museum" which helps identify them as products of Peale's Museum run by the noted artist Charles Willson Peale. A formerly enslaved man named Moses Williams who had been owned by the Peale family secured his freedom in 1802 and then produced thousands of silhouettes for Peale's Museum at 8 cents each. His remarkable story has only recently received attention. These works are not signed and Peale may have employed other silhouettists in addition to Williams but many or all of these portraits were likely by Williams. Three are captioned in manuscript: Mary F. Smith "Lardner" and "Country Cousin." Additional ephemera mounted in the scrapbook includes an 1824 engraved invitation to the Lafayette Ball; a set of French allegorical prints of the four seasons; 8 large hand-colored botanical engravings; and an engraved portrait of Lafayette by Longacre. Most of the volume was actually never used as a scrapbook. The Philadelphia newspaper Gazette of the United States 16 February to 30 June 1802 is bound as fairly close to a complete run of approximately 100 issues but 5 issues are missing and 7 are incomplete. The 8 March issue has two black-bordered pages to mourn the death of Federalism at the hands of Thomas Jefferson. More traditionally the black-bordered 26 May issue mourns the death of Martha Washington. <br /> <br/><br/> hardcover‎

‎Mathilde.

‎Manuscript Document from 18th-Century Maryland Recording the Sale of a Thirty-Year-Old Slave Woman Named Torry‎

‎Frederick County Md: March 7 1788. About very good. 1p. folio docketed on verso. Old folds short splits along a couple of fold lines minor toning. An impactful manuscript document from the early national period in Maryland formalizing the sale of a slave woman in Frederick County. The sale was made by Robertson Eastburn whose family emigrated from England to Maryland in the early 18th century. The document reads in part: "In consideration of the sum of forty six pounds in Gold and Silver to me in hand and paid by Frederic Strombol.I do hereby Acknowledge have Bargain'd Sold and Delivered and by these presents doth Bargain Sell and Deliver Unto the said Frederic Strombol One Negro Woman named Torry about thirty years of age To Have and to hold the said Bargained Negro woman unto the said Frederic Strombol."<br /> <br /> Slavery in Maryland lasted over 200 years from its beginnings in 1642 when the first Africans were brought as slaves to St. Mary's City to its end following the Civil War. In 1664 under the governorship of Charles Calvert 3rd Baron Baltimore the Assembly ruled that all enslaved people should be held in slavery for life and that children of enslaved mothers should also be held to the same standard of law. 19th-century American slave sale documents are growing increasingly scarce in the market. First edition of the second scarce Women’s Suffrage tract published by the pioneering Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association CWSA in 1871 subsequent to their second Annual Meeting held in 1870. This tract features the extended letter to Chicago IL suffragette and editor Myra Bradwell from Judge Howe of Wyoming detailing women serving as jurors on a murder trial jury after the passage of the Wyoming Territory’s 1869 Suffrage Act and that they discharged their duties with skill and also refutes the spurious claims that the men and women jurors had been improperly sequestered together for 4 days and nights. Following the publication of this tract Howe was replaced as a judge in the First District by Joseph Fisher a Union Army veteran who refused to recognize women being in the jury pool or allowed to set on juries even though they did have the right to vote. Isabella has also incorporated suffrage reports from the National Society for Woman Suffrage in England including specific mentions of petitions before Parliament in 1869 & 1870 on the admission of women to the suffrage by Lydia E. Becker along with excerpts of speeches by Mill delivered to the London Society of Woman Suffrage.Hooker closes with a report on a proposal by the Executive Committee to send women to meet with small local committees to “obtain signatures to the petitions for a 16th Amendment and to circulate tracts on the subject of Equal Suffrage.†See: Jessica Jenkins The Long Road to Women’s Suffrage in Connecticut Connecticut Explored Vol. 14 No. 2 Spring 2016; Kim Viner Women on the Jury: Wyoming Makes History Again Wyoming Historical Society Encyclopedia Jan. 23 2020.

‎[Texas]: [Women]: [Photography]: Rainwater, Terrell‎

‎Pair of Studio Photographs of Texas Women Produced by Terrell Rainwater a Kentucky-Born Photographer Who Operated His Studio in Late-19th-Century Sulphur Springs‎

‎Sulphur Springs Tx: T. Rainwater 1890. Two cabinet card photographs both around 6 x 4 inches each on a slightly different printed studio mount. Minor wear and soiling. Very good. A delightful pair of Texas studio photographs produced by Kentucky-born shutterfly Terrell Rainwater after he moved himself and his family just outside Dallas Texas in the latter part of the 19th century. The slightly smaller photograph features a young woman in a lacy shawl staring to the right and over the camera. The other photograph captures three young women in long dresses seated in a studio environment. Both are mounted on studio cards the smaller reading simply "T. Rainwater Sulphur Springs Tex." and the other reading "T. Rainwater Extra Finish Sulphur Springs Tex. South Side Square."<br /> <br /> According to H. Bascom Thomas's 1895 book A Souvenir of the Sulphur Springs Gazette Terrell Rainwater "is the leading photographer of Sulphur Springs. He is located on the south side of the square. He is a native of Kentucky in which state he became schooled in his art and for many years he has followed the photography as his choice profession. His parlor is situated over the Weaver grocery store. The finest apparatus is used and in the quality of his work we recognize no superior. He makes a specialty of life-size crayon and pastel portraits." Rainwater moved away from Sulphur Springs around the turn of the century helping us to date the present photographs to likely the last decade of the 19th century. We could find no other examples of Rainwater's photographs outside his descendants who have a genealogical presence online. T. Rainwater unknown‎
