‎WOMEN EDUCATION DUNBAR Charles F.‎

‎Reply to Dr. Stillé's Strictures on the Harvard Examinations for Women wrapper title‎

‎Philadelphia: Penn Monthly 1878. Offprint. First separate edition. Octavo. Sewn pamphlet; printed blue paper wrappers; 12pp; errata slip bound in after final leaf of text. Rear wrapper neatly detached; old tide-line to upper margin of front wrapper; text tight and unmarked - a Good complete and sound copy. Signed in type and end of text by Charles F. Dunbar. Article reprinted from the April 1878 issue of Otis Kendall's Penn Monthly in which Stillé's original article had appeared two months earlier. Dunbar an eminent Harvard economist answers the criticisms of Stillé then provost of the University of Pennsylvania who had taken issue with the profferment of the Harvard Preliminary Examination for Women in the city of Philadelphia. Stillé's argument appears to have been based as much on parochialism as criticism of the exam's content; he was at this time working to raise the profile of Penn among elite American universities and resented the incursion of Harvard onto Penn's home turf. But Stillé evinces more than a little snobbery to say nothing of chauvinism in his assertion that ".no hot-house treatment which forces a precocious and unnatural development can ever produce that fruit which is the support and comfort of human life" - an assertion which Dr. Dunbar answers somewhat caustically: "These truths are well-worn and not denied but if they serve in connection any other purpose than that of a modest rhetorical embellishment it is because the relate to some fancied system quite different from that under discussion."

Despite widespread criticisms similar to the ones ably answered by Dunbar in the present essay The Harvard Examinations for Women - quite stringent covering a wide range of subjects and requiring their subjects to answer in at least two languages other than English - eventually became a national standard for the accreditation of young women who were unable whether for reasons of gender or circumstance to attend four-year universities. Stillé meanwhile became one of the University of Pennsylvania's historical icons; ".the extraordinary progress begun in his administration initiated the great expansion that was to continue under his immediate successors." DAB. The pamphlet appears uncommon - though widely catalogued in WorldCat nearly all holdings examined appear to be digital copies of the original held at Harvard's Schlesinger Library. unknown books‎

‎Women Americana‎

‎Three Sisters: An Intimate Photo Album of the Midwest Between World Wars‎

‎Women. Photo Album: Three Sisters. Midwest 1918-1927. Oblong octavo. Covers are brown cloth boards held by ties. Oblong octavo 11" x 7" inches. Title "Photographs" in gilt. 230 snapshots in a variety of sizes most 3.5" x 4.5" inches but also 2.25" x 3.5" 1.5" x 2.25" and 7" x 5". Both black and white and sepia in glossy and matte finishes. Very occasionally torn along the fold and minor silvering to a few photos. The life of three sisters growing up in the Midwest is captured with warmth and incredible detail creating a culturally significant document of middle-class family life between the World Wars. The majority are captioned in white pencil or white ink with the name of the person in the photo and a brief description like "Sunday best"; some are a little ironic tone such as "Seeking sunburn" underneath a photo of two of the sisters sweaty and bare armed in a row boat and "No water but our tongues" under a picture of the sisters as little children in bathing suits on their porch pulling silly faces. We follow the women from childhood through early adulthood through their schools and summer camps across suburban Ohio the shores of Michigan and the wooded Ozarks. The private lives of these young girls are revealed to be impish spirited and silly in these intimate photographs; At the same time they were growing up in a period of great change. With the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 they were the first generation of women to come of age in a time when they could exercise the right to vote. Bumping at corners and a half-inch tear at top of spine otherwise clean. First page separated. A fascinating cultural artifact of a historically significant period for women's rights. unknown books‎

‎Women midwives‎

‎Four 18th century decrees for Mainz School of Midwifery‎

‎Childbirth Midwives were responsible for the safe delivery of the foetus. Their work could be a steady and chosen occupation. Initially there was no formal training or the need to obtain a license but this changed within Europe in the 1700's since some town authorities recognized the need for trained midwives in order to protect the safety of the public. In contrast to the 'norm' of the 15th and 16th centuries midwives were women concerned with public affairs since they were employed by the municipal authorities and were entitled to a salary. They were also paid by their private clients. Hence in a male oriented society midwives -who came from the lower middle class were called to challenge gender divisions.

Four decrees printed in German block lettering related to the Mainz School of Midwifery from 1784-1785. 5 sheets 12 ½ x 7 ½ in. Decrees relate to registration exam protocols and professor approbation's issued by Baron von Frankenstein. Documents contain handwritten notes at bottom. Light scattered foxing and thumb-soiling. Horizontal crease in all sheets. Very good condition. unknown books‎

‎Turn of the Century American Boarding School Life Monson Academy Massachusetts Photo Album 1899 to 1901‎

‎1899. Monson Academy student photo album circa 1899-1901 documenting coeducational secondary education and student identity at a Massachusetts preparatory institution during a period of expanding academic opportunities for both men and women. The album records individual students through formal portraiture providing evidence of enrollment class affiliation and institutional culture at one of the earliest coeducational academies in the United States. The material supports research on preparatory education gender integration in schooling and the development of academically oriented boarding institutions at the turn of the twentieth century.

Photo album containing 43 original silver gelatin photographs including 25 cabinet sized portraits and 18 smaller prints primarily consisting of individual bust length student portraits with several group images. Many photographs include handwritten pencil annotations on the verso identifying sitters and class years such as "W. H. Ballard Class '01 M.A." The album is bound in an ornate leather cover with gilt and brown decorative elements and a central cameo portrait with pages arranged to display both larger and smaller format photographs. The images present male and female students in formal studio style compositions reflecting conventions of academic portraiture and documentation of student cohorts.

Created at the turn of the twentieth century the album situates Monson Academy within broader developments in American education including the growth of coeducational institutions and preparatory training aligned with emerging scientific and technical fields. Founded in 1804 the academy later developed a reputation for preparing students for institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earlier admitted international students including Yung Wing who became the first Chinese graduate of an American university. The album provides a visual record of student populations within this institutional context documenting the presence of both men and women in a shared academic environment. Light wear to album with minor foxing to pages; photographs clear and well preserved; overall very good. A cohesive photographic record of coeducational preparatory schooling in the United States. unknown‎

‎WOMEN and PROVENANCE. Chenevard Hepsibah C. owner.‎

‎Nonce collection of American imprints of popular English plays with the repeated ownership markings throughout of Hartford Conn. resident H. C. Chevenard.‎

‎V. p.: v. p. 1795-1803. 5 vols bound in 1 contemporary calf 6.13 x 4.25 inches 84; 60; 76; 5-72; 76 pages.

A handsome little sammelband of popular English plays from the library of Heppy Chenevard these all seemingly here repurposed for American audiences including one by George Colman the Younger for which copyright has been granted to the Baltimore publisher and another published "as performed at the Boston Theatre with universal applause."

This volume includes multiple examples of an ink ownership stencil for H. C. Chenevard with a few scattered ink ownership signatures as well—including two instance of the signatues as Heppy Chenevard pointing toward ownership of this volume by Hepsibah/Hepzibah C. Chenevard ca. 1780-1859 of Hartford Conn. the unmarried daughter of Capt. John Chenevard and a member of an old Hartford family; she is listed in directories and city records as resident at 121 Main St. in Hartford until her death in 1859 when "the old Chenevard place" was sold and razed for the planned construction of a new Universalist church building.

The volumes here collected are:

Coleman sic for Colman George the younger. John Bull; or An Englishman's Fire-Side. Baltimore: Printed by John Butler for Andrew Price 1803. American Imprints 3988.

Lillo George. The London Merchant; or The History of George Barnwell . . . Boston: Printed at the Apollo Press by Belknap and Hally 1793. Bristol B8398.

Holcroft Thomas. The Deserted Daughter: A Comedy . . . as Performed at the Boston Theatre with Universal Applause. Boston: Printed for William P. Blake at the Boston Bookstore 1795. Evans 28847.

Goldsmith Oliver. She Stoops to Conquer. An imperfect copy of an unknown edition bound here without the first two leaves and without the epilogue.

Allingham John Till. The Marriage Promise: A Comedy in Five Acts . . . Philadelphia: Published by John Conrad & Co. et al. H. Maxwell Printer 1803. American Imprints 3653.

Somewhat rubbed stained foxed in spots occasionally trimmed a bit close; with the noted imperfections a good copy of an interesting example of early American literary taste with a New England woman's provenance.
