Early Archive of Lesbian Pulps Written by Queer Women
LGBTQPulp Archive of three early lesbian pulp novels all written by female authors identifying as lesbians or bisexuals and published in the 1950s. While most lesbian pulps of this time period were written by men under pen names women also published in the genre and are noted for providing a more intimate accurate and emotionally appropriate spin of the typical pulp. Female authors were also known for providing positive endings for their lesbian characters a unique characteristic within the genre. This archive includes popular lesbian authors Anna Elisabet Weirauch whose early German work Der Skorpion is presented here in its English translation Of Love Forbidden and the "Queen of Lesbian Pulp" Ann Bannon. All novels are featured in Barbara Grier's "A" tier meaning they feature significant lesbian characters and action and should be included in any lesbian pulp collection. The first printing of this memoir was limited to only 100 copies and titled MEMOIRS OF MRS. ANNE J. LYMAN in 1876. This edition was re-titled RECOLLECTIONS OF MY MOTHER: it omits some letters from the first edition but includes anecdotes and letters new to this edition. These are extensive New England memoirs concentrated on Northampton Mass. The Illustrations include an actual mounted photograph of a painted portrait of Judge Lyman. Et pourtant celles qui donnent la vie peuvent aussi donner la mort, avec une froideur, une détermination souvent effrayantes. Véronique Lesueur-Chalmet évoque ici l'itinéraire psychologique et le parcours humain, souvent terrible, de quelques-unes de ces criminelles qui firent la "une" de l'actualité. Ainsi les sueurs Papin, Léa et Christine, deux "bonnes" apparemment sans histoire, qui exécutèrent sauvagement leur patronne et sa fille dans les années trente, plongeant la France entière dans la stupeur. Ainsi Violette Morris, championne sportive qui se mua en espionne du Reich avant de devenir l'une des plus terribles auxiliaires de la Gestapo. Ainsi Pauline Dubuisson, meurtrière par dépit amoureux, ou Sylvie Paul, qui emmura son amante Jeanne Perron. Toutes ces femmes firent couler des fleuves d'encre et déchaînèrent les passions, du début du siècle dernier à nos jours. Ce livre, illustré de photos d'époque, s'attache à reconstituer leur parcours et à explorer les zones d'ombre qui, souvent, expliquent le dramatique basculement de leur existence.

Very Good English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (19 x 13 cm). In English. 222 p. B/w ills. 'The Ottomans developed a highly organized society with many traditions. However, the writing and publicising of 'memoirs' was not one of them. Even the most illustrious Grand Vizier did not avail his personal diary to others for perusal (even if he ever did put them in black on white). This is what makes Leya (Saz) Hanimefendi's book rather unique. She was taken into the 'Harem' of Sultan Abdulmecid at the age of four and lefty Çiragan palace only to be married. She is the only woman who wrote (or rather dictated to her son) her actual experiences of life at the Çiragan Palace where Sultan Abdulmecid reigned. Her references to many incidents, from the utensils used to the Ladies' Orchestra make this book interesting both to the layman and to the historian. Her great sense of propriety and admiration for the way of life she enjoyed at the palace (despite the vigorous discipline) is another factor that makes reading these memoirs a jotfull experience'.

In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 118 p. Lithographed. Early edition of this rare poem collection by Leyla Hanim (?-1847), who was a few female poets in the Ottoman literature, known for her lyrical love poems. Divan literature is described as "a certain tradition literature with its rules and boundaries" in the most general form. These rules and boundaries have enabled the formation of common expressions in religion and in Sufi intellection in particular and in poetry by the influence of Persian literature, and they have made it traditional in time. In this context, in classical Turkish poetry, whose male poets are predominant in quality and quantity, patriarchal rhetoric presents an outlook that its frame has been established by common tropes, metaphors, poetic themes, and in short by similar imaginations and ideas. The divans of Lady Mihri (died after 1512), Lady Leyla (died in 1848), and Lady Seref (1809-1861) have different aesthetic understandings in that context. Leylâ Hanim was one of the few Turkish female poets who made a collection of her poems. Lived in Istanbul and died in 1848. Her family was close to the Ottoman Sultanate and Leylâ Hanim, witnessing the reign of Sultan Mahmud II (1808-1839) and Sultan Abdülmecid I (1839-1861). She is the daughter of Moralizâde Hâmid Efendi. Her mother Hadîce Hanim is the sister of Keçecizâde Izzet Molla, a notable bureaucrat, and poet of the times. She has three brothers, Atâullah Mehmed Efendi, Nurullah Mehmed Efendi and Hâlid Efendi, who died at a young age. She had financial problems after her father's death and she expressed those in her poems. Some of her poems in the divan mention that her father and brother Hâlid Efendi have lived in Bursa for a while. She is educated by Keçecizâde Izzet Molla, she is quick-witted. She experienced a short marriage, which lasted about a week; after the divorce, she devoted herself to poetry. Her grave is in Galata Mevlevîhanesi. Several books include information of her life, characteristics, and poetry such as Fatin Tezkiresi (363), Ahmet Rif'at's Lugat-i Târîhiyye ve Cogrâfiyye (154), Tuhfe-i Nâ'ilî (895), Sicill-i Osmânî (93), Bursali Mehmet Tahir's Osmanli Müellifleri (406), et alli. These resources indicate that Leylâ Hanim is from a noble family and the links of the family to the high cadres of Ottoman bureaucracy and their intellectual property have left traces in her poetry.
