Quali sarebbero stati i riferimenti di questo bambino, il suo non-rapporto con la madre? E poi penso anche agli altri bambini. Quelli che la genitrice ha avuto come madre vera e propria. Libertà, uguaglianza, fraternità, sì! Libertà per il bambino di non essere escluso in quanto figlio di omosessuali (maschi o femmine che siano) nelle piccole città e in campagna. Uguaglianza per il bambino affinché possa crescere con un padre e una madre. Original publisher's full plum cloth binding, elaborately stamped in gilt and blind. Binding slightly rubbed, but still attractive. The complex binding design is by John Leighton, and was executed by Edmonds & Remnants (with their label). Douglas William Jerrold (1803-1857) was an English dramatist and writer who, from the 1830s to 1850s, was absolutely at the centre of literary London. A friend of Dickens and Thackeray, both pall-bearers at his funeral. Jerrold was an editor, playwright, journalist, novelist and public wit and among the most popular writers in Britain. It was 'Mrs Caudle's Curtain Lectures' that really captured the public's imagination. Serialized in Punch, they were lively studies of female domination in Victorian society. The illustrations here by Charles Kenne (1823-1891), who began to draw for Punch in 1852, are considered a masterpiece in book illustration. Ray. John Kenyon Corrected Autograph Manuscript of part of the poem 'A Day at Tivoli' by the Victorian writer John Kenyon.
Without date or place the poem published in 1849. 2pp. 4to. 35 lines of verse. On a leaf of laid paper with watermark 'J WHATMAN TURKEY MILL'. Paginated 13-14. Very good on lightly-aged paper. The first page begins with the line 'The shrouding soil and give it back to air' and the second page ends with the line 'Won it's sic dark truth and Gaspar fed on such.' The verses in this manuscript are published on pp.19-21 of 'A Day at Tivoli: with other Verses' London: Longman Brown Green and Longmans Paternoster-row 1849. There are two emendations to the manuscript: the second word of the phrase 'or boundary steeps' has been crossed out and replaced with 'rocky' which is the published reading; and the words 'thown out in gest or face' have been crossed out and replaced wtih 'in gesture or in face' the published reading being 'in gesture and sic in face'. A 28-line passage has been marked out with a cross in the margin at beginning and end and the leaf was perhaps sent to a printer for the republication of this extract which begins 'Oh Italy! if fallen as some delight To say thou art yet fallen from what vast height;'.
