L'istituzione storica che più sintetizza il concordato civile tra uomo e donna, in termini di riconoscimento dell'altro sesso e di collaborazione nella generazione e nell'allevamento dei figli, è da tempo abbandonata all'autogestione da parte dei sempre più limitati contraenti. Ne ha decretato la definitiva decadenza il modello leggero di coppia paritaria, espressione del momento presente anche quando procreativa, un amoreggiare disimpegnato e instabile tra soggetti smarriti, nel quale l'eventuale ruolo genitoriale è un mero fatto privato. Negli ultimi decenni, paradossalmente, il simulacro famigliare è stato utilizzato da una corrente del movimento gay quale ascensore sociale e diploma di pari opportunità da consacrare con rito pubblico, indossando la maschera di coniuge o di padre e madre, copioni consolidati che sembrano non necessitare di ulteriori spiegazioni o verifiche. In realtà, i temi controversi delle unioni omosessuali, le adozioni e la gestazione per altri, sono epifenomeni di processi sostanziali: la crisi delle identità sessuali, delle differenze di genere, dei rapporti tra i sessi, della funzione materna e paterna, finanche dei legami interpersonali. Proprio i rapidi mutamenti del costume rendono ancor più necessaria una riflessione sull'affettività e sulla genitorialità, per promuovere una varietà di formule relazionali e parentali coerenti con le differenti tipologie di orientamento, personalità e valori.
